It appears that attention deficit disorder or ADD isn't just for kids anymore.  Experts estimate that the number for attention deficit disorder in adults could be as high as 8 million affected.  Some believe that out of that number 80% don't even realize that they have it.

Doctors and researchers have argued whether ADD in adults is the result of having the disorder as a child and some studies have shown that ADD/ADHD actually declines as the person ages.  Others seem to think that between 30-70% of those who have this when they are young, will actually carry it into their adult life.

So, is Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults real?  It is a modern day disease and was practically unknown several decades ago.  In this article, I intend to discuss the problems associated with ADD/ADHD in adults and give some solutions to those who think that they have it.

ADD or Attention Deficit in Adults can be very hard to diagnose because the symptoms are different than children affected by this disorder

ADD is a complex disorder in Adults

The problem with diagnosing this in adults is that adults that are affected with ADHD don't normally share the same symptons as children.  The disorder manifests itself as a problem of self-regulation in adults while, in children it tends to affect the ability to pay attention and affects impulse control.  Without this self regulation, an adult ability to function in day to day routines are severly impaired; it is not enough for them to simply get a task done...they also have to manage the task in an organized and structured way.

Adults with attention deficit disorder have more marital problems and financial issues as well as an increased risk of substance abuse. Many are more likely to cheat on their spouse, partly because they get bored with things quickly.

Factors of ADD in Adults

While it is not completely clear what causes ADD, researchers have their suspicions that the development of this disorder may be brought on by allergies, hyperinsulinemia, environmental stress as well as pollutants, artificial food additives, infection and anxiety. The factors are all across the board though and no one is certain where or how ADHD comes from.

One of the clearer indicators is that attention deficit disorder could be caused by food allergies.  These include  food additives found in processed foods.  To rule this out, you can simply start eating fresh vegetables and organic meats to make sure that your disorder is not interlinked with food additives.

Another possibility for acquiring ADD as an adult is the potential of heavy metal intoxication.  Heavy metals are everywhere and some researchers have found ties between lead and copper and behavioral problems.  This can be ruled out by simply doing a hair analysis.

Attention Deficit Disorder in adults and the food you eat

Many researchers believe that you can cure ADD with an herbal and food regime.  Most of the herbs listed below are meant to improve brain function overall.  You diet can also play a significant role in lowering or eliminating the risk of developing ADHD or ADD.

Herbal Treatments for treating ADD in Adults

Ayurvedic herbs like bacopa is thought to improve memory and many herbologists recommend it as a memory enhancer for those who have a problem focusing

Ginkgo biloba, while not proven by science is help for concentration and brain function in treating ADD.

Additionally, ginseng is thought to be helpful for memory.  You can also try mullien oil.

One of the better herbal remedies for ADD in adults is valerian root extract.  Tests and studies have confirmed dramatic results and the best part is that there aren't any side effects that are typically associated with ADD prescriptive medicines.

Your Diet and ADD/ADHD

Diet is by far the best way to treat this disorder although it seems to be the most unpopular method.  In my opinion, whenever something is going on in your body, it can likely be traced back to what you are eating.

You can eat all fruits and vegetables, preferably raw and any breads or crackers or cereals that contain oat.  Stay away from refined sugars and breads that contain wheat.

Cold Water fish like salmon and herring are very good sources of DHA and have been known to be a vital component to brain development and memory.  If you don't like fish, you can always try a capsule.  Not all fish oil supplements are good though and you should do your homework before choosing the best fish oil for you.

A diet low in protein may be a risk for developing ADD later on in life.  Follow a high protein diet, like one prescribed for hypoglycemia.  Many researchers are starting to see a connection between hypoglycemia patients and those that have ADD/ADHD.  In fact, it is possible that many who have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder are actually hypoglycemic.

Adults do NOT develop ADD/ADHD. They have always had it. People with ADD/ADHD are born with it. It is very likely hereditary and could also be a result of pre-natal influences such as a stressful pregnancy either psycologically or physically. Some people born with this disorder learn to control the behaviors that are part of the ADD/ADHD such as learning to focus and learning to be calm and relaxed. I know from experience, my family has had three generations of people with ADHD ... my father, me and, now, my son. My father and I both became very successful business people in our areas of expertise. I'm sure my son will too with the right kind of motivation and a supportive family.
