ADD/ADHA or attention deficit disorder is a modern day problem in which the patient has a problem concentrating on tasks at hand, is easily bored and as a result their work suffers. It is most common in children although a growing number of adults are being diagnosed with this disorder as researchers start to understand it better.

The causes of ADD are a mystery to researchers although many think that they have a better understanding of how someone get attention deficit disorder now. Some think it is heredity influenced although many experts are now pointing the finger at food allergies and modern day additives as potentially the root cause of developing ADD, especially in adults.

How do I know if I have attention deficit disorder?

This article, I will detail some attention deficit disorder symptoms and outlay a broad scope as to who is most likely at risk. Bear in mind that many researchers think that ADD mimics hypoglycemia so if you think that you may have a problem, the result may be something completely different than you think.

Also bear in mind that popular ADD drugs like ritalin, detroamphetiamine, pemoline or adderall is not the only solution you have if you are diagnosed with ADD.  A lot of times, simply adjusting your diet can be more beneficial to the drugs that actually just mask the symptoms rather than deal with the root of the problem.

How do I know if I have Attention Deficit Disorder?

Unfortunately, there is not a single test to determine if you are affected by ADD or ADHD.  However, the American Psychiatric Association has a set of criteria that will help you determine if you are most likely at risk.

You may have ADD if:

  • You don't pay attention to details or often make mistakes that are careless.
  • You have problems focusing on tasks at hand or activities
  • You don't listen when spoken to.
  • You have a problem following through and rarely actually manage to finish a task.
  • You have issues with organizing activities and tasks.
  • You avoid things that require sustained mental effort.
  • You are easily distracted and forgetful when it comes to daily activities.
If you have six of these symptoms, you may have ADD.
Additionally, there are other symptoms of impulsiveness that you may want to examine....
  • If you are constantly fidgeting with your hands or feet and can't seem to get comfortable.
  • You can't seem to sit still, even when you are supposed to stay seated.
  • You have a restless feeling (if it is your child, they run around or climb excessively)
  • You have problems taking part in leisurely activities because you feel restless or bored.
  • You talk excessively and don't stop to listen.
  • Answers questions before the question has been completed.
  • You interrupt conversations or butt into over people's tasks excessively.
There are other criteria as established by the APA.  These symptoms have to be continuous for at least 6 months and become more frequent or severe.
If these ADD symptoms cause damage to your social, academic or work functions over time, then you will need to address your problem.
Additionally, the symptoms should carry over into other settings such as home and work.
Once again, you should make sure that your symptoms are not a part of another disorder that you may have.
Attention Deficit Disorder happens and happens even more frequently than you would think. You can check out my other article, Attention Deficit Disorder Adult.
