Attraction Marketing – Attracting Leads: Shotgun or Laser-Guided Missile?
Sorry about the military analogy but I wanted to get your attention and it actually helps me to make my point. In network marketing, would you rather have targeted leads, leads that are excited to talk to you, connect with you, and join up with you or would you rather chase down prospects who don’t even know why you are chasing them and definitely don’t want to talk to you. Unless you enjoy pain and frustration, the choice is obviously the targeted leads. Let me show you what I mean.
Traditional Network Marketing
In traditional network marketing training, we are taught to prospect for new associates by making a names list of at least 100 friends, family, associates, and acquaintances. Then we go talk to them and share our network marketing opportunity.
Most of these prospects, your so-called warm market, will usually politely listen to you out of courtesy but since there wasn’t any real targeting on your part, you will end up with a lot of “thanks but no thanks”. They weren’t looking. Also, after you get to name 10 on your list, names 11 to 100 all of a sudden mysteriously never answer their phone and are never home. And while walking down the street, you could have sworn you saw your friend but when you get to where you saw them, they aren’t there. Weird!
Once you have exhausted your name list you are taught to prospect your cold market, people you don’t know. That’s where you start lurking in the malls, supermarket, coffee shops, etc. Every human interaction has the ulterior motive to drop hints of your successful network marketing business to bait the unsuspecting cold prospect. Again, more untargeted activity. They’re not looking.
The metric usually mentioned in traditional network marketing training is you need to talk to about 100 people to find someone to join your business. Therefore, if you talk to 2 people a day, you would sign up about 1 distributor every 3 months. If you look at your compensation plan, it is going to take a long time before you become profitable in your business.
Yes, there may be millions of people living where you live, but using what I call the shotgun approach where you are shooting off in all and any direction to try to hit a prospect ain’t gonna cut it. Most people don’t have the perseverance and self-confidence to talk to strangers and face constant rejection. And as with a shotgun blast, there is a lot of collateral damage. A lot of people get hurt in the process.
Attraction Marketing
Wouldn’t it be great if you could use something more like a
laser-guided missile for targeting your prospects, people who are
actually looking? What if you could specify exactly what you were
looking for in a prospect and then be able to track them down? That’s
where attraction marketing comes in.
Attraction marketing allows
you to target your prospects and leads with precision. Attraction
marketing uses the power of the internet and search engines to guide
your ideal prospects to you. You do this by getting inside the head of
your prospect and figure out the exact conversation that is going on
inside their head.
For example, your target market may be people who
have tried network marketing before but failed because they couldn’t
get enough prospects. They are thinking about getting back into some
kind of business due to the economic downturn but they want to make
sure they can make it work this time around and wants to use the
internet. So your prospect types into Google: “internet network
marketing lead generation”.
It so happens that you have articles
on the social media sites on the internet that show up on the search page of Google for those
exact search terms or you have a Google ad targeting those search terms
on the paid ad section of the Google page. And your prospect clicks the
link. Now you have a laser-targeted lead that is looking for what you
offer and you can start building that relationship with them.
Let’s
suppose, now that you have targeted leads, you can get 3 out of 10
people you talk to joining up with you in your business. I know people
who have higher success rates but let’s stick with 3 out of 10. If you
talk to 2 people a day and take weekends off, you will talk to 10
people a week and have 3 people a week join your business. That’s 12 in
a month. Now your probably one of the top distributors in your
business! Now plug that into your compensation plan. A lot more
exciting isn’t it!
Now everything has changed. Your prospect was
someone actually interested in network marketing and interested enough
to go to your article or click on your ad. A lot of the heavy lifting
is done as the prospect wants to talk to you and you don’t have to
chase them down. The dynamic is already different as you are now the
hunted and not the hunter. You are no longer desperate and you are more
confident and that helps in your relationship building. And no collateral damage; your friends still talk to you and your family still loves you! That in a
nutshell is attraction marketing.

Hi Doug,
It is amazing how attraction marketing still baffles so many, it seems so right and natural. I guess maybe it is the simplicity of the idea that people believe that it can't work. But it does !!! Without the pain and heartache and the alienation of friends and family.
Attraction Marketing also helps in being proud of your business instead of feeling like a "peddler of goods."
Everyone can be successful, at many levels, doing just this.

Hey Doug I actually liked the Military analogy having been an ex-military man myself. Its become amazing to me over the last year and a half how much easier it is to attract leads using the the new model of attraction marketing.
Why anyone would even want to to use those old methods is beyond me being that the internet has opened up a whole new realm of business marketing.
Since I'm not a "go after family and friends" kinda girl, there is only one option left, and that's attracting people to me by exchanging value for that confidence vote.
It certainly creates an atmosphere of trust and honesty that is sorely lacking in many online promoters.
Attraction Marketing is allowing you to do all the skills of the old school marketing with finesse on the internet.
Only, when you put yourself out there as an honest, valuable solutions provider to whomever you are reaching out to, they in turn respond.
Sure it may be slow at first, but, better than the brush off you may get with family and friends.
A Laser Guided Missile all the way!
Let's face it, sorting people is what ALL businesses do. It doesn't matter if they are network marketing companies, online companies or the doughnut shop on the corner. They are all sorting the masses for those who want what they have to offer. When done correctly and with integrity attraction marketing brings to you the people who actually WANT what you have to offer.
Pitching your biz opp to your family, friends and the fast food check out girl is about the same as trying to sell Michigan Jerseys at a Buckeyes game.
So, sort smarter not harder...

Doug,
Great article. I vote for the laser-guided missile approach.
I have done too much marketing in the past using the old traditional methods - chasing after people who have absolutely no interest in what I have to offer. I don't want to use those methods ever again.
I agree with Angela's comment. Before attraction marketing, I was actually embarrassed to be called a network marketer. I was embarrassed to tell people what I did every day.
Today, I am proud to be called a network marketer because I am attracting people to me in a very professional manner.

I remember recently hearing what the customer may be wanting or needing may not be what "I think" they need or want. I agree with you, Calvin, if I understand my "target market" they will come - if I am where they are...I like how you explained it.

This is a subject that I think needs more attention, thanks for such a much needed article. This may be one of the top reasons people fail in MLM Network Marketing. We all really need to learn how to zero in on our target market!
