Your Authentic Thailand Holiday - See the Real Thailand
67
Finding an authentic Thailand Holiday is not hard. In fact, seeing the real Thailand is fairly easy if you know where to look.
Seeing the real Thailand means heading out beyond the areas designed for tourists. This means says staying away from the fancier hotels and the areas of towns that are designed for tourists. You can find the real Thailand by heading out into the country side and the areas of towns, which are not designed, to service tourists.
You can check for smaller hotels that are designed for Thai people rather than western locations. Avoid the planned tours and take a walk out all on your own. This does come with its own dangers so be sure check and ask about areas that foreign visitors should avoid.
Smaller off the beaten path restaurants are going to provide more traditional cuisine. When ordering in these smaller places keep in mind that they may not speak English and be sure to order things with no spice or mild since many Thai restaurants serve food that is incredibly spicy.
There are also a number of lovely temples and cultural spots that are going to be less well known and may only be slight notations in the travel guides or may not even be listed in most guides. You can also find out about the real side of Thailand by getting a local guide. There are usually a number of local guides available and if you are staying in a tourist hotel you can find more information out about them from the hotel staff.
You may also want to consider visiting areas, which are not major tourist attractions, or areas, which hold tourist appeals because of their unspoiled or natural elements. This will give you more access to an authentic Thailand holiday. If you are looking for things that are authentic to do in Thailand avoid the beaches and golf courses as well as the main street shops and restaurants as these will be geared towards tourists. Look instead of back streets or shops that sit outside the main areas for tourists.
This will give you a better feel for the Thailand that is underneath the tourist attractions. If possible when considering a Thailand holiday consider becoming friends with someone from Thailand such as a correspondence or language exchange partner. When visiting consider having your friend show you the favorite haunts and things to see. This is one way to see the Thailand behind the tourist locations.
Finding a real or authentic Thailand holiday is not as difficult as many may think. It does take some planning and preparation beyond following the tourist guides. No matter where you go however, you will want to know a few phrases in Thai as well as follow the general safety procedures.
It is also important to adhere to any warnings, which may have been posted about particular areas. You can find these out on most tourist news sites as well as a detailed list of things to take with you and general precautions. Paying attention to these when having an authentic Thailand holiday is essential.
