My Favorite Things

Objectives: TSW connect text to self.

TSW discuss events from a story and apply them to their own lives.

TSW reflect on story using art and expression.

Materials: My Favorite Things (According to Alberta) by Emily Jenkins, Wall Paper (one for each student, long enough to trace student's body), markers, crayons, dry erase board, dry erase markers, pencils, scissors

Procedures:

1) Teacher asks the students, "What does it mean if something is your favorite?" Discuss.

2) Teacher explains that she is going to read a story all about a little girl and some of her favorite things. Teacher reads My Favorite Things (According to Alberta) to the class. Teacher leads discussion on the story.

3) Teacher asks the students to brainstorm Alberta's favorite things. She writes suggestions on the board as the students say them.

4) Teacher explains that now the students are to think about their favorite things. She describes how these things could be foods, tv shows, books, sports, etc.

5) Teacher(s) will trace each student on a piece of large wall paper.

6) Students will then have the remaining time to decorate their outline with all of their favorite things.

7) Optional: teacher can write statements such as "My favorite book is...", etc. on the different limbs and students can fill in their answers.

8) Students will present final projects to their peers.

Assessment: student participation and response, student oral presentation, teacher observation

That's awesome, I'm going to try this with my 4yr old son with Autism. I think he'd respond quite well to this activity.

Thanks,Jeff

I think that this is a great excercise in just getting to know your peers. Writng them causes focus on what is unique about each person (student).

A favorite! Shine on!
