I can say from first hand knowledge that buying a car at 60-70% below fair market value is not only possible, but it is a common occurance at many automotive auctions.

When it comes to automotive auction sites, I have found that you can indeed find what you're looking for and you can expect to pay as little as 25 cents on the dollar or less for your car if you do the research first, stick to your numbers and above all be patient for the right deal. To do this, it's best to stick to the 4 top sites that are far superior to the rest. They have more auctions, more cars and more support. They operate with integrity. If you browse these sites consistently, and if you remain patient, your car will become available at the right price within a few weeks, whether it's a Hummer, Honda or Harley - it's out there, trust me.

The biggest rule to remember when it comes to these automotive auction sites, and auctions in general: Go in with a plan. Do the research. The car sites like Edmunds and especially Kelley Blue Book are particularly useful. Know your models and know how mileage, condition and options effect value. Then stick with what you know. Don't bid outside your knowledge-base just because a great looking car seems like a good deal. If you've done the research on a Honda Accord, don't haphazardly bid on a Lexus, just because it seems like a good deal. You want to know it's a good deal. Do a little research and your confidence and proficiency will lead you to better buys and wiser bids.
