Autoresponder

An Autoresponder is simply a computer service or program that automatically replies to Emails sent to it. An autoresponder can be "Remotely Hosted" eg Getresponse which is a subscription based service accessed online, "Locally hosted" eg Sendstudio which is a scripted application that you install on a web server and "Desktop hosted" eg Mailloop7 which is installed and operated directly from your computer.

All of these option have pros and cons that we will explore a bit more below

An autoresponder can be used for a variety of purposes some of which include a thankyou message after purchase, ezines, newsletters, give aways, FAQ replies, promotions, follow ups and more.

The real power is in the ability to send sequential messages that are pre written and sent out according to your specifications, you can send an unlimited amount to very custom fields so that each subscriber has the most appropriate information.

The 3 Types of Autoresponders

Remotely Hosted:-

This is a service that is run by a provider online, they host the software and have dedicated servers just for delivering email. They are usually a subscription based service and you just log into your account online. This is by far the easiest and fastest option, you have access to constent upgrades and most providers have tutorials and video to help you along. This is the best way to get started. My pick of the best companies is Getresponse.

Desktop Hosted:-

As the name suggests this is hosted on your own computer. It is generally an annual sudsciption or a one off payment to recieve the software. This has the advantage of being able to make campaigns when you are off line and they offer a high degree of customization which helps things to look professional. This is a good all round option for beginer and pro alike. They are generally easy to use but a good, fast internet connection is required. My pick is mailloop7.

Locally Hosted:-

These are scripted applications that you install on a web server and access through a web browser. These are a little more technical, most companies offer free installation and tutorials but it is a big advantage to have some know how in a scripted languasge like PHP, ASP or Pearl. The advantage is you have total control of the application which means a customized and professional finish. They generally have no list or message size limit and are good for all list sizes. My pick of the bunch is the new Sendstudio NX.
