Ask Susan Peters - Breeder's Choice Healthy Pet Foods?
Breeder's Choice Pet Food has done a awful job of making healthy pet foods. Healthy pet foods do not include needless grains and other pet health damaging ingredients.
Avocados contain a toxic component called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. This fruit is very toxic to dogs, cats and most animals. Breeder's Choice, what were you thinking?
Rice Flour - the basis of recent pet food recalls.
Chicken Fat - Used to encourage pets to eat ingredients which they normally would not eat.
Brewer's rice and brewer's dried yeast are by-products of beer production. There you go, your little pet gets what is left over after a beer run, the stuff not fit for human consumption.
Natural Flavor. I always like the way pet food companies hide the use of manure in the ingredients. Natural flavor is made from the manure of the animal the pet food company wants the pet food to taste like. If natural flavor were an actual part of the ingredients then natural flavor would not have to be listed as a seperate ingredient.
Sodium selenite is mainly used in the manufacture of colorless glass - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pet food producers are using ingredients unfit for human consumption which are killing our pets. The ingredients in pet food must be changed!
The use of Corn, Wheat, and Soy are causing such awful conditions in pets including:
- Dry and itchy skin
- Fever
- Ear aches
- Ear infections
- Hot Spots on the skin
- Bad breath
- Dental disease
- IBD
- Hair loss
- Sore feet
- Abnormal nail growth
- Bloat
- Weight gain
- Tumors
- Moles and warts
- Seizures
- Blindness
- Deafness
- Heart conditions
- Kidney conditions
- Liver conditions
- Early pet death
These companies need to be held accountable for the injuries to our pets and our best friends early deaths!

I EMAILED THIS COMPANY BECAUSE MY KITTEN WAS ON THIS FOOD AND THIS IS WHAT THEY SENT ME,We welcomeyou to check our website for the numerous, unsolicited Success Stories. The responses are lengthy, the first deals with Menu, American Nutritionand the safety of our foods, after that addressed is why our AvoDermNatural food is a safe healthy product. There is no need to be worried about the safety of our foods. Breeder'sChoice is in it's 61st year, it is not a large impersonal company, it isfamily run and the management personnel have been in the premium petfood on average of 25 years or more. There are less than 100 employeesnationwide, this included management, sales, office, customer serviceand production. As for the recall, just by being a pet food company we were affectedwhether our food was involved or not - people believe there was guilt byassociation, even when this is not the case. All our 5.5 oz canned catfoods except for the 3 oz are made at Menu Foods. Canned dog food ismade at American Nutrition. This is something we have been forthcomingwith the entire time. Our president wants us all (customer service, sales, management, production, quality, etc.) to be honest andforthright in our answers to customers, media, various web sites, government etc. If you are familiar with The Whole Dog Journal, they have done severalpieces on the recall and companies responses to them and then follow-upon how business has changed since then. Please see if you can find thearticles, they are worth the time and effort. NONE of our foods were affected by the recalls. We do not use the typeof ingredients in which melamine and cyanuric acid were mixed with whichwere wheat glutens and rice protein concentrate. Please know to, that there are different production lines at Menu andAmerican Nutrition. The foods affected were the chunks and gravy andthe soft moist pieces. Our canned foods made at Menu and AmericanNutrition are a pate consistency. They are made on different equipmentthan the chunks/gravy and soft moist food. Of course we continue tomonitor our incoming products by not only examining them at our QualityControl Lab but also by sending samples out to independent laboratories. We have notarized documentation from the canneries that verify thesafety of our products. Dry foods are made at our own inhouse production facility in Irwindale,CA.The ingredients in our foods are certified from suppliers in the UnitedStates. AVOCADOSMost avocado information circulated is outdated. This can be verifiedby also going to the ASPCA website to see their latest take on avocadosafety. We challenged them on their previous ascertion and provideddocumentation as to the safety of avocados is our foods. Ad a result, the ASPCA has modified their statement. The information below fills inthe gaps between what is being published. You can feel quite confident in AvoDerm Natural pet products safety andnutritional value. In the 25 years since Breeder's Choice firstintroduced this product line, millions of dogs and cats worldwide haveconsumed AvoDerm products with no negative reactions from avocado oil ormeal. The avocado is full of vitamins A, C, D, E, and B6. Also, avocadosare rich in potassium, niacin, essential fatty acids and many othernutrients for excellent skin and coat condition. AvoDerm Natural petproducts use only carefully selected suppliers of avocado meal andavocado oil. Years of problem-free consumption of these productsindicate that AvoDerm products are not only safe for dogs and cats, butalso provide vital nutrients for them.Concern has been expressed by the ASPCA about the consumption of theleaves, fruit, bark, and stems from the avocado tree, with the exceptionof the avocado fruit which is used for the oil and meal; none of theseparts are factors in any of the AvoDerm Natural pet productsformulations. Dr. Art Craigmill, UC Davis, Professor and Extension Specialist inEnvironmental Toxicology has said that his studies and other research inthe United States and Australia have shown that the problem of toxicityis in the leaves and the pit of the Guatemalan variety; the avocado meatof the fruit and oils have not been shown to be toxic. AvoDerm Naturalpet products do not utilize any Guatemalan variety avocados, nor do weuse any leaves or pits of any variety of avocados for our avocado mealand oil. The avocado meal and oil used in the AvoDerm Natural pet products comesfrom the meat of the fruit and does not contain leaves, bark, skin orpit of the fruit. The oil is extracted from ripened fruit in which themeat pulp has been separated from the skin and the pit. Through amechanical separation process the oil is extracted and filtered andplaced into sealed containers. The pulp of the fruit is dried, ground, and screened before being placed into its final packaging and thanshipped to our facility.Dr. Guy Whitney, Director of Industry Affairs and Research of theCalifornia Avocado Commission, has stated: "...in California there arearound 7,000 family farmers who grow avocados and almost every one hasdogs that actively seek out fruit that has fallen from the trees tosnack on. The happy, well-filled out and shiny-coated orchard dog is afamiliar sight to anyone in this industry and we have NEVER had a reportof a family orchard dog getting sick from eating avocados. Also, the USForest Service and UC Santa Barbara are about to publish a paper on theimportance of avocado orchards in California to sustaining carnivorepopulations (bears, coyotes, mountain lions, foxes and small cats)during drought conditions. All of these animals are known to eat theprotein and nutrient rich fruit that has fallen from the trees. Nowbirds are a different creature and it IS known that avocados are toxicto birds. Avocado leaves are known to be toxic to horses. Avocadoseeds (pits) are NOT edible and are toxic to animals."Our AvoDerm Natural formulas put dogs and cats on the right nutritionaltrack with healthy skin and coat on the outside and the right nutrientsto keep them healthy on the inside as well.
