I was a victim of panic disorder for sixteen long years and it was definitely not planned. Every panic attack sufferer I have ever heard of hates panic attacks and are desperately seeking a way out like a mouse trapped in a maze. These attacks hit and hit hard, whether you're asleep or awake. They are not selective.
The problem with curing panic attacks is that people are always searching for that magical pill to end their misery. That kind elderly doctor that will prescribe a potion specifically for murdering your panic attacks just does not exist! Sure, there are medications on the market that will keep the panic monster away for a few hours, but I decided long ago that I wanted to live my life panic free and be normal again. In order to do that, I had to learn to avoid panic attacks.
The only real cure for panic disorder comes from within! It's that simple. Your best weapon against the dreaded panic attack is knowledge. It may not be sexy, but it is definitely true. I am living proof of that.
When you begin having panic attacks, it turns your world upside down. It shakes you all the way down to your core. You lose your confidence. Your self esteem goes out the window. You become sensitized to the symptoms. You begin to overreact to the smallest symptoms. Some folks take their own pulse constantly. If it skips a little ( which is normal in panic disorder ) it scares you and brings on a host of new symptoms and another panic episode.
Have you ever heard of facing your fear? Well, basically that is what you have to do. I don't mean get in your car and drive two hundred miles and then the panic will end! You will never avoid panic attacks that way! You have to begin facing your fear slowly, in a productive way that will build your self esteem shred by precious shred. Your confidence level will then begin to improve.
You have to accept what has happened to you. You work with panic attacks, you don't fight them. The more you fight, the worse it gets. Realizing that panic attacks won't kill you is not enough. You have to believe it with all your heart. The only way to “believe it with all your heart” is to prove it to yourself. That's where facing your fear comes in. Then and only then will you begin to avoid panic attacks.
Panic attack sufferers are some of the most courageous people on the face of this earth. You have to be, to survive these horrible attacks. I know just how hard it is, I was one of you.
My panic ended several years ago and I have my life back now. I know that it will happen for you too. Hang in there!
