Avoid Redundancy

Avoid Redundancy? Is that really possible?

In one word.... No. Forgive me for being blunt. Just being honest. You can not avoid redundancy, but you can secure yourself a little.

I know people who tell me how afraid they are of redundancy. They say "Oh its horrible, every day in the news there are horror stories about people who have lost their jobs. My work does not look very great. The company has lost money this year, and we are cutting back on a few things.

Then these same people, throw a "sickie" at work.

Doesn't really add up does it!? Let us look at some things you can do that will make your managers more reluctant to make you redundant.

  1. "Sickie" -  Don't do it. Don't be tempted just because you are tired or can not be bothered It is not the way forward, and I guarentee that when the managers have to choose the first wave of who is to be made redundant... those with a poor sick record will be first choice. If you are genuinely ill then of course call work. If you are able, go to work and they will see how sick you are. They will see you as a valued employee who is trying, and making an effort.
  2. "Alice & Wonderland syndrome" - "I'm Late, I'm Late". Please don't play the this role. It is irritating when other people can get into work on time and early. If you have to rely on public transport, then catch an early bus or train. It looks slack when an employee comes in late.
  3. "Unpaid Overtime, are you kidding me?" - Nope. I am afraid not. If you can put in an extra 10 minutes, 30 minutes a day. Your managers will notice this. They will see you are loyal to the company and conscentious. All of which are valued highly by any company. Again if it is a choice between getting rid of an employee who is late regularly and an employee who stays a bit longer, or starts a bit earlier which one do you think they will choose?
  4. Mobile away - Yes there are people who sit with their personal mobile bleeping away and ringing. Then they pick it up, start chatting and texting back. I am sure your work won't mind the odd one. But when it is continuous all day... it really does not look good.
  5. Money really does talk- Is there anything you have seen at work that you think the company are crazy for doing? Well tell them. Not in a rude way. Sit down, plan out where they could resource it cheaper, how much they would save a year and then email it to your manager. Even if it is changing your stationary supplier e.t.c If you are saving them money you are doing 2 things. Firstly, you are helping the company from having to resort to redundancies. Two, you are actually making them realise what a valued asset you are.
  6. ASU - Yes, it has been in my other post. Accident Sickness & Unemployment Cover. If the worst has to happen, then get insurance against it. You would be surprised at how little it costs. You can get a free no obligation quote from my website.

All of the above is no guarentee against redundancy, but it is a little comfort blanket and might prevent it.
