Avoiding Work from Home Scams

A lot of people dream of working from home. After all, it does promise freedom and flexibility that is virtually unheard of within more traditional jobs.

Working from home really can be a dream. However, there are a lot of scams out there that could easily turn your dream into a nightmare.

How do you avoid these scams? Well, it’s been said that only fools rush in. That is a good rule when dealing with work from home opportunities as well.

Don’t rush into anything, and don’t allow yourself to be pressured into committing to an opportunity. If someone is applying pressure to get you to sign on to something that is a pretty good sign that you should run in the opposite direction.

Do your homework. If you are looking to sign on with a company to pursue a business opportunity, find out as much as you can about that company. Don’t hand over any many or personal information until you have done your research. Check with the Better Business Bureau and also be certain to plug in the name of the company into a search engine (Google is a good one for this) to find out the buzz.

Be wary of any company that wants your money. Yes, there are some legitimate instances (such as direct sales) where you will need to purchase inventory or such. However, be suspicious of any company that is charging fees for non-tangible things (i.e., training, etc.) or has high requirements for merchandise that you “must” stock. Remember, this is a job; you shouldn’t be paying a company to work for them. You, as the employee, are supposed to be the one getting paid.

Of course, be suspicious of any company or individual who claims that you will make large amounts of money with little effort. While there are people who have carved out a niche for themselves and are doing quite nicely, that rarely happens quickly and there is almost always a large amount of work involved in those early days of getting established. Even once one is established within X, Y or Z, there usually is still quite a bit of effort going into the business. Working from home often requires more time and effort than working a job outside of the home.

Also, don’t give companies money to “help” you find legitimate work from home job opportunities. This is information that one can easily obtain by doing a little online research, reading some articles and/or books, and talking with some people who already work from home. The information is out there, and much of it is free and readily available.

Follow these simple steps, and your dream of working from home may become a happy reality.
