Intro

     Hello and welcome to the second BLENDER 3D tutorial by BBP-Studios.  Now in our last tutorial, which was our first, we went over the very basic stuff.  What ever thing looked like when you start blender 3d, what a few things did, how to navigate the 3D view.  Things like that.  So now in this tutorial we will at least get into a bit more detail an learn about the basics of objects, and "Some" very basic modeling. 

 

What are objects and can we shape them?

What are objects? Objects are just what your thinking that they are. They are abstract representations of physical shapes that are represented "in our world" as geometric figures. They are fully capable of being modeled and modified.  They can be turned into virtually any thing.  But for now lets just turn a standard cube into a simple object like maybe a plain or a simple grid into a mountain path.  I think I like the plane idea.  Okay lets get started, open "BLENDER 3D" and lets begin.

Readying Your Objects

     Okay, before we do any thing, we're going to need an object to work with.  There is a default object when you open blender, yeah, the cube that they give you.  But theres no use in having it if you don't know how to get it ourself.  So the first thing we're going to do is get rid of it.  Know you may no be used to this, but in order to select something in blender you have to "RIGHT CLICK" it.  So right click your cube objected and on the keyboard press delete.  A confirmation prompt will appear[WHEN THESE PROMPTS APPEAR, SOMETIMES MOVING YOUR MOUSE QUICKLY WILL CLOSE THE PROMPT.  KNOW THAT'S NOT TO IMPORTANT TO KNOW UNLESS YOU DON'T WANT A LOT OF IRRITATION].  You can either click on this confirmation, or you can just press enter on your keyboard while your mouse is still over the prompt.

Adding objects

     Well no we have to learn the basics of getting objects into your scene.  It's not difficult at all trust me.  Okay, here we go, while your mouse is over the 3D view press "SPACEBAR."  This will bring up a menu like the one you see below:

     As you may notice in the image above.  The "OPEN OBJECT MENU" is leading from the "ADD" selection to the "CUBE" selction with "Mesh" in between.  Selecting "CUBE" will automatically create and display a cube into your 3D view.  Much as you see below.

Look familiar? It should it's right where we began, and this is a good thing.

Now as you learned in our first tutorial, you can manipulate the angle of your 3D view by clicking and holding both the right and the left mouse buttons. Lets get in some practice with this feature.

"Hold both the right and left mouse buttons down while your mouse is over the 3D view and move your mouse cursor to the right, left, or up, or down." As you can see, the mouse cursor is moves the angle of the environment. Now, assuming you have moved your 3D view enough you can tell that the object that you added is a 3D or 3 dimensional.  This is good. 

     "But BBP-Studios, why do we need the panning feature?"  Well I'll tell you why good sir/madam.  As a designer you need to be able to really analyze your creations.  Weather it be a simple model like the one we're going to do.  Or it be an entire city, or if your really good, like an entire ecosystem.

Editing your object

Now that we have created our object it's time to start building something out of it. And trust me when I say it's both not hard, and it consumes very little time.

Okay, you will notice that in the lower left hand corner of your screen there is a panel that houses the following selection options:

  • VIEW
  • SELECT
  • OBJECT
  • and there is selection box that says "OBJECT MODE"

Click the box that says object mode. This is a "selection box" that you will interact with VERY OFTEN. After clicking the box you will see a menu appear with the following results:

You have just opened the "Mode Selection" box. This selection controls what various modes you can enter based on the type of object that you have selected.

Upon opening this menu click on the "EDIT MODE" TAB. This will take you into "Object Edit Mode." Once you are in "Object Edit Mode" and entirely new system opens up to you. You will now be able create more effectively and efficiently.
