HEALTH IN AMERICA
53As many already know Americans over eat, as the food we swallow is so delightful and the pictures looks so good at the restaurant. However one thing most Americans forget to do and that is look at the calorie content of what they are eating, or the portion size many are eating. I can’t count the countless times I have been to a restaurant and looked at the menu items and had a hard time deciding what I wanted to eat. Yet ignoring the amount of calories it had in it. I once weighed over 190 pounds mainly because I over ate and did not eat in moderation. My cholesterol went up to 140 although that may still be low and ideal, however, it use to be 120, yet my eating habits had changed I became to comfortable and started pigging out, and everything begun to elevated. My weight went from 169 size 12 to 196 size 14/16, and, my blood pressure went up from a normal 120/80 to 140/85 simply because I gain weight, I was almost borderline diabetic which identified to me that I had a predisposed condition if it were to get out of hand, so I decided to change my diet I eliminated everything “white” such as white rice, white bread, flour tortilla, dairy products, whole milk, bagels, any thing enriched with white flour that was the first thing. Second, I cut back on sugar and carbs. I try and consume less than 150 carbs a day, as many experts know carbs can catch up to you real quick, and for me their was a need in reduction of carbs. I count calories in my mind and sometimes I write it down, and that’s only if I over indulge I then begin to cross out the things I should not have eaten as a reminder how fast we can gain it back.
Third and most important was the need to create choice foods for myself and not starve to death, I know we all herd of those fast diets well they may work for a short term, but I am in it for the long haul, and this diet does not break any promises because it generally consist of a lifestyle change that is long lasting like a marriage until death do us part. Therefore, it is not really a diet it is a change in what I eat, and its all in the mind, our mind controls our thoughts and feelings and for many it may be hard to say no, but just think about the health problems that come along with the decision if you don’t say ‘no’. Therefore, the goal should be to condition our minds to think about how long do we want to live and the what type of life do we want to live, is what it boils down to, of course you can live a pretty stable life with medications to control your health problems, but the question you need to ask yourself, “is this the life you want for yourself”. I wish I could say it is that simple but it is not, turning down food for some is like taking away the ‘air we breath” yet we have to rationalize what out weighs the risk “better health or 12 pills a day to stay alive.
I know their is not a magic wand that can take away the hunger, however, the goal is that many Americans can live a healthy life if they simply choose foods that are more essential for your health. Here are some of the foods that will help curve that appetite for instance, nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, cashews, or trail mix nuts they are loaded with protein and fill you up faster, drink plenty of water this is another filler, and whole grains, some cereals, whole grain cream of wheat, wholegrain bread in moderation, and high fiber foods such as oatmeal, shredded wheat, and beans they have lots of fiber and protein for non meat eaters, vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, collard greens, fruits, watermelon, kiwi, avocado, bananas, apples, you can also cut back on fats, take off the skin, eat skinless chicken, salmon, tuna, eat other meats in moderation. Last but not least get some exercise in. I work out as much as, 3 to 4 times a week, try starting at 30 minutes a day, walk, run, jog, go up down the stairs, do house hold chores, figure out a way to get your daily exercise in, and most important remember to get a “good night sleep”.
