I don’t have any kids, but I do spend a lot of time selecting names for the characters in my Erotic Romance novels. What amazes me, is that I think I actually put more effort into choosing a good name than some parents-to-be.
For starters, I actually take the surname into consideration before I select a first name. I know for a fact there are pregnant women out there not doing this. If they were, they wouldn’t end up with a child named Emerald Green. And if they did it on purpose, they should not be allowed to breed further.
So what about you? Do you like your name? My birth name is beautiful – in the country it originates from. It sounds lovely when pronounced properly. But it sounds like crap in English. I grew up hating it. No one in school could even guess what it should sound like. It was a nightmare.
Don’t do that to your kid. Don’t go out of your way to be clever and pick a name that’s only shared by some fruit tree in South America somewhere. Don’t name your kid after some urban city you’ve only seen on map. Don’t name your girl after your favorite male movie star. Don’t name your boy after your great-great-grandfather whose name he won’t be able to pronounce until he’s a teenager.
Just don’t.
Unless you’re a movie star and have so much money you can give them a sheltered life. If you can’t, your kid stands a good chance of getting picked on for it. School sucks enough without the added pressure of being a misfit due to something your parents could have chosen not to do.
And even if you are a famous movie star, gawd’s sake, have you heard some of these names? Apple, Banjo, Freedom, Pirate? You have to be making millions of bucks and have your head in the clouds (or somewhere else) to not remember what school would have been like for these kids. That said, I can understand not wanting to name your kid Mary or John. And that’s fine. Today I’m going to give you a list of 10 boys’ and 10 girls’ names you can use without worrying your kid will hold it against you.
Girls
1. Gemma
2. Natalia
3. Trixie
4. Shara
5. Danica
6. Bella
7. Maritza
8. Farrah
9. Ginger
10. Alexandra
Boys:
1. Turner
2 . Keller
3. Campbell
4. Gavin
5. Parker
6. Zachary
7. Luke
8. Oliver
9. Devin
10. Reese
Yeah, you might not like some of them. But they are damned sure better than the extremely overused Dakota, Ashley, Austin and Tyler. And don't worry if you think some of them sound old-fashioned - Noah was one of the most popular names of 2006 and that name goes back to the Ark!

Blanket?? Poor thing!!!
I had a friend named Betty-Jo and everyone called her BJ, until we were teenagers and the jokes started. But, still...Betty-Jo? We weren't in some small town in middle America--it was a city in California. I had another friend named Michael Michael, first name same as the last.
Michael Michael, you know his parents are going to hell for that, lol!
I have to say, I'm vastly amused to see Alexandra on your list. My mom spent a TON of time thinking about names for me, and finally decided on one that had a nice, long, fairly traditional formal form -- but had lots of possibilities for nicknames that ranged from tomboyish to very feminine-sounding. She also thought it'd be nice and unusual -- not WEIRD, but not Mary, either. That part backfired, and my high school graduating class of 470 included 5 Alexandras, but oh, well . . . I could have been an Emily or a Jennifer. I'm proud to say I have NEVER been unhappy with my name, so I'll be happy to substantiate your claim that children won't hate their parents for that particular name. :)
Very interesting mix of old-fashioned and modern, on the whole.
You've made me extremely curious, though. Would you be willing to share with us what your real first name is? I'm eaten alive wondering what name us stupid Americans murdered to prompt such a childhood hatred of your name!
I have always liked the name Alexandra, and always wished I could have been an Alex, lol. My first novel has a heroine named Alexandra, that's how much I like it. ;)
As for revealing my birthname.. maybe in the future! ;-)
noooooooooo, no Isa ... you can't be serious about GINGER!!!! isnn't that cruel? or Trixie (not in the UK anyway ... think Fifi Trixiebelle Geldof)... i love the biblical boy names, and the older girl ones too ... Grace, Beth, Madeline .. Alexandra too
Ginger doesn't have the neg connotation in the US that it has in the UK! Nor does Trixie! I promise. ;)
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF CHLOE(first name) ANGELIE(middle name) ,THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO NAME MY 3RD DAUGHTER.MY FIRST 2 CHILRENS NAMES ARE PRETTY POPULAR I HAVE 1 STEPHANIE & HAVE 1 TARA NOW I WANT TO DO IT A LITTLE DIFFERENT AND I THINK THAT YOUR OPINION WILL COUNT.so please lemme know!!THANX AND MY NAME IS ANGELIQUE(it's a french name)
Hi Angelique :)
I actually like the name Chloe quite a bit. It's well-known enough that people should be able to pronounce it, but not so common that everyone in her class will have it, too. Angelie is also nice, as it's known, but not so known with that spelling (which, I assume is French as well?).
I think they're both very nice names. Best wishes to you! :)
Wow! I'm so glad my parents thought of a good name for me... I mean, having Michael Jackson as your dad is bad enough, but being named Blanket? That kid got screwed! I, personally love my name: Lucas Paul (last name censored). In highschool, there were only 3 other kids named Lucas in the whole school, and there were about 1500 of us. I truly lucked out, and when I have a kid, I think I'll have fun with names. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind for the future.
i like the names you have up on here i agreee there are a lot of weird ones out there. I recently just had a daughter and I personally love her name.. Aryiah Marie (not willing to share last name)... our next one if we have a girl will either be named Caydence Elizabeth or Peyton Jae.... For a boy though my husbad want Brewer Michael im not to sure on that one though ;) any ways nice hub :)
please tell me what you think of the names listed above.. i forgot to sign in Ha
MPS - Thanks for the comment! :)
Whitney - My honest opinion is that I really like the combination of Peyton Elizabeth. It just sounds right, for some reason. The others are nice too, but the flow of Peyton Elizabeth is very nice. I like Peyton Michael, too, lol, but I know you're not asking that for a boy. To be honest, I'm not keen on Brewer.. makes me think Brewers Yeast.. or the baseball team.. but thats just me, and a little boy might love it. :)
Trixie sounds like a stripper name. Ha. The names Maritza and Shara, don't seem to fit on the list. I would think that proper pronunciation would be incorrect a lot of the time. Maybe I'm wrong.
I'm big on names, as well, I'm infamous for asking for people's middle names. I try to keep lists, as I too, write once in a while. But, unfortunately unlike you I have not been able to successfully complete a story and be happy with it. And sadly, names almost never stay the same throughout the beginning and end of composition. As I'm never happy with them. It's just so hard to find names for characters that I don't know someone with that same name, as knowing people with the names of my characters also seems to mess up my plot somehow.. Anyway, that was my tangent ... Sorry... :-(
It's my own personal list, Whitney, how can any names I've included not fit on it?? They're easily pronounced, and they sound good in their native languages, and in their phonetic English translations.
It kills me that my two cousins, Alec and Ryan, have the same middle name: Thomas. Sure, its a nice middle name and sounds great for both, but do they really have to share?
I wondered what you thought of the names Jazlin and Chloe. Which one is the best of the two and please give me any thoughts about middle names that could go with those names. Thanks.
Gale - Hmm. Was Thomas someone significant in the family, perhaps??
Jayla - Im not a baby name expert.. but I'll give you my opinion. :) I like the first name, but I think I might prefer it spelled as Jazlyn. I think Jazlyn Amina sounds nice, though they are both a bit uncommon. Chloe is I think a bit popular, but I like it, and I think Chloe Michelle sounds nice. Im sure whatever you pick will be perfect. Best wishes to you!
In India. we Hindus are named after our gods, usually. Luckily, I was given a quality for my name; 'Ashok' means 'not sad,' which is fine. It's a nice ordinary name. Which is why I gave my sons nice ordinary names as well, just as mine, and they seem to be okay with their names.
You're right, Isabella, the lowest pits of hell
for parents who give their children practical jokes of names!
Wonderful hub, as ever.
(nice, apt, funny pic, BTW)
Thank you so much for you promp reply. I do love both names and I really like the middle name Amina. Chloe Michelle is very pretty. I like Chloe Marie as well. Do you think it has a ring to it? Our last name begins with an M.
By the way, I looked at your picture and you are very beautiful. I just thought I'd share that with you. Thanks again for your feedback.
My son's name is Aragorn. It's because I like Lord of the Ring very much. What do yuo think about that name?
Being an Ashley, I feel I can confidentally say that not going with a ridiculously popular name will probably be appreciated by your child. I'd also like to note that just because you spelled the name in some creative way does not mean it will be okay. For example, Ashleigh instead of Ashley is still pronounced the same way, so it will still be a common name. In addition, they will have to deal with spelling issues over the years, forever fixing the spelling of their names on paperwork and nametags. >_<
I have to say though, that while I appreciate most of the names you listed, "Campbell" seems like a name that could induce some...frustration. I can only imagine how many times the poor boy might have to hear "...you mean, like the soup?" However, I was curious if you had some reasoning behind picking the name that I was missing. What made you choose that name?
I'm not sure I understand your question?? What name are you referring to??
I like names that start with 'J' a lot, for some reason. And I know that giving a kid a common name with an unusual spelling can create issues where everybody misspells it, but it does give the whole name a different effect.
My Mum also named me Isabella. However in my 8th Grade class of 90, there are 3 Isabella's, 1 Isobella and 1 Belle (Annabelle)
Most of the Isabella's go by Bella or Bell, so the teachers always assume that's what I get called. Did they never think of Izzi? Or Izzie (as i used to spell it)?
Very infuriating to think my Mum was going to name me Alexa Williams. It would have been SUCH a great name, and I wouldn't have hated my name the way I do now! Isabella Williams? Such a mouthful, especially when I have dreams of being a singer. Who's going to by a CD by "Isabella Williams" haha!
My given name's pretty horrific- but not in the way you'd expect. My brother was William Paul, but I ended up being named after (I believe) elderly relatives on either side. I actually refused to give out my middle name- I had a boyfriend who was guessing, and I finally caved and told him it began with "M". He went through all he could think of with no joy, until he finally went, "well, unless it's something like Marigold or Margaret..."
...Smooth, buddy. Smooth. I got my name changed as soon as I was old enough to; and then, ironically, had to change it again with my gender several years down the line!
i love the names bella, ginger, and alexandra on the list above! =D
Hi there,
We're contemplating naming our child Tristan if he's a boy, and Katie if it's a girl. Your opinion please? Isabella (lovely name incidentally)
I LOVE the name Tinsley, but i dont know if thats a popular name or nt, also what do you think of the name for a girl - Brett?
The Name Tinsley sounds COOL! What do u think of the name tinsley?
and i think some really great names for girls are: Yasmine (YA-Z-MIN) , Jade, and I LOVE Cassie.
My name Emi, its ok, common I suppose, I like the names Marielle, Lyla-Jane, Noelle is pretty :) Dora and I dont know why! hehe, for girls.
hi. i'm from romania and my name is ioana alexandra... the first one is a very common name here and it's something like joanna in english. i like my name a lot ...both.. bt i adore alexandra.. always in my class was at least 3 or 4 ioana so i introduce myself as alexandra. there's a funny story bout my middle name. at first it wasn't on the 'name-our-kid' list :)) it was the idea of my nana and the priest who bauptised me... i was bauptised on 30 august the day we celebrate st alexandru. i always considered it a very cool name that made me look more serios and because i'm always joking i've got a lot of nick names after my middle name... lice (lexutza, alex, lex, alexa, lexa... etc) so i'm glad u added it on ur list
i like the name tais... for girls... i don't remember when or where i heard it.... bt i like it so much... i think it's egyptian or so ... anyway i wanted to ask u ur opinion
My gran's name was Josephine Elizabeth, but she was called Bettie-Jo for short. She was a resident of South Florida from the 20s to the 50s. I was given the name Katie and I was one of a kind in Florida. Then i moved to the midwest and found that Katies were a dime a dozen. ugh. I want to pass a good set of names onto my children (when I have them); names that aren't too common, but also have good meanings and imo, good names. Me and mine have been thinking about names. For girls: madalena, myrtle, josephine, lillian, roberta.
For boys: alexander, isidore, matthew
I totally get what you mean especially about the book thing I write fanfiction and when I make up a character I bet I take in more consideration then my mom did with mine and with my name (mariah)I love it cuz its unigue but the problem is its kinda sucks when you get a new doctor and they call you maria my older brother in fact when we were younger couldnt pronounce it so he called me ri ri(said rye like the bread) and Im now never called mariah by my parents only ri ri

becauseilive says:

And let's not forget Michael Jackson's son, Blanket. You're so right about taking the last name into consideration. When I was in school, I knew a Rose Garden, Patti Patterson, Chris Christopherson, etc. I don't know what people are thinking. And let's not talk about the fact that a friend of mine is marrying a guy named BJ Wood.
