Winter, Spring or Fall, back to school spending is a constant reminder of the benefits of wearing school uniforms. At least that's what supporters say. Those who oppose mandatory uniforms for kids don't agree. An article written by the Administrator of National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) said that: “Adopting uniforms should be a school-by-school decision”. The statement was made because apparently not everyone is in agreement with making it mandatory for students to enter classrooms wearing school uniforms.

The Back To School Hassle And Expense

From child to care giver, most would agree that preparing to go back to school after a break is a hassle, if not an expense. Crowded parking lots, long lines, cash registers ringing. This is the scene of back to school spending. Parents who finally get through it, happily breathe a sigh of relief. Crowded hallways, longer lines, bells ringing. That’s the scene of students returning to class after months of school vacation. When they finally make it through the day, they breathe a sigh of relief! Learning new faces, mispronouncing names, a sea of children in Polo shirts and Dickies. This is the scene of students returning to class in school uniforms. When teachers makes it through the first week, they’ll breathe a sigh of relief too!

Going back to school following a summer or winter vacation can be an extremely frustrating time. Parents are worried about going over thier family budget for school clothes and supplies. Students are apprehensive about new classes and fitting in and . teachers and staff are concerned about making everything run smoothly. It might make it a little bit harder to recognize new faces in the crowd, but saving on back to school expenses isn’t the only benefit of returning to class in school uniforms. If your child has the option of wearing a school uniform instead of everyday clothes, you may want to consider the benefits.

Thank Goodness For School Uniforms

The advantages that school uniforms provide are easy to recognize by most parents and guardians. Thank goodness for class uniforms was the overall feeling of parent’s in many public school districts in the early nineties. A number of highly populated cities from Boston to Los Angeles had begun to introduce mandatory school uniform programs. This was actually at the urging of the parents. They were concerned about their children’s declining school grades as well as the rise in campus violence. Administrators constantly sought ways to insure student’s health and well-being while on campus. Studies showed that the student’s preoccupation with their attire was a large factor in low grades and school violence.

Because clothes (and jewelry) tend to serve as status symbols in a lot of schools, some educators believe this leads to distractions in the classroom. Additionally, some parents are not financially in a position to do a lot of back to school spending, especially if they have multiple children returning to classes. Those kids that have to return to school wearing last semester’s wardrobe can sometimes feel alienated. It’s no fun arriving back at school and it appears everyone is wearing new back to school gear but you. While young people may be the last to admit it, many of them are relieved to wear the status free uniforms that help them fit in better.

School Uniforms & Other School Expenses

Buying multiple items in a pack is more economical for those parents on a strict budget.  This type of bargain shopping helps to free up money to spend on necessary school supplies like paper, pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons and other stationery. Then there is also the matter of school shoes, gym clothes and back packs. All these things can be purchased at Walmart, Target and the other stores previously mentioned. While you can usually get a bargain on stationery items all year round, it is even better to buy them off season and in bulk, whenever possible. All of the stores listed above, as well as stationery stores like Office Depot and Office Max, allow you to make purchsase online via your credit card or checking account. This way you can either have your purchases shipped directly to your home, or held for pickup at the store.

Making The Best Of Your School’s Uniform Policy

The benefits surpass just the monetary value of having a school uniform program at your child’s school. Whether it is a mandatory or voluntary program, having children return to class wearing school uniforms can be an advantage. If you are a parent that has not previously supported the ideal of a school uniform program, this information should give you some food for thought. Please take another moment to revisit the benefits of children wearing school uniforms to class. Doing so may help you consider supporting a uniform program at your child's school.

This was a good read. My kids are older now, but I remember when the Elementary School they attended tried having the kids wear uniforms one year. It didn't really work out too well. Didn't even last the year!

This makes total sense. The great thing about school uniforms is that girls can't try to compete with each other with who has the latest fashions because well, you're all wearing the same blouse and skirt!
