Back pain : main reasons and relief measures

Studies show that 80% of adults suffer from some kind of back pain. This can be due to stretching or wound in muscles, ligaments, bones etc. Especially women are more prone to back pain. Keep on working in a bowing posture, working in the same posture, standing for long hours, long hrs of work on system/laptop in wrong posture etc may result in back pain very easily. This can also happen very easily due to strain in back muscles due to heavy weight lifting. Back pain can be mild or severe. Pain in neck, upper back/spine, middle spine or lower back due to touching or moving or even little weight lifting are indications of future complications.

Following can be taken as main reasons of back pain:

1. Keep sitting in a posture for a very long time.

2. Pain in joints.

3. Pain in muscles due to weight lifting, over stretching.

4. Eating junk food, which may result in gas troubles that many times causes pain in back.

5. Lack of balance diet may also show results as described above.

6. If you don’t exercise you are more prone to back pain, because muscles become stiff and when you have to do some extra work or sudden weight lifting, it results in back pain.

7. Constipation is also a cause of back pain.

8. Malfunction of kidney might result in back pain.

9. Obesity.

10. In certain cases, during influenza one can feel back pain.

11. Irregular periods in women might be reason of back pain.

12. Wearing high heel shoes gives server strain on back nerves and this is one of the major causes of back pain in women.

13. Sleeping in a wrong posture, for example sleeping with too much big pillow might result in strain in spinal cord and neck bone and gives back pain.

14. Too much of anxiety and mental stress.

15. Doing more work than your body supports.

16. Some kind of wound on back due to accident.

17. During pregnancy, more than half of women suffer from lower back pain, this can be due to increased weight in those days.

Some measures for having relief:

1. Massage of the affected portion with hot mustard oil is the best remedy. This relieves the muscles and improves blood circulation in that portion.

2. Do specific exercises in supervision of physiotherapist.

3. Do specific yoga exercises in supervision of Yoga trainer.

4. Swimming can also be a good remedy but do it only after taking proper advice from your physiotherapist.

5. Brisk walking is also very good to relieve back pain; it should be done early in the morning while your stomach is empty. Avoid this if there is severe pain.

6. Keep a pillow below feet and chest and sleep with back up.

7. Apply ice pack to affected portion and after an hour apply hot pack.

8. Eat food that is rich in vitamin C ie lemon, orange, Indian gooseberry etc.

9. There should not be any stress on mind, do something to lessen stress.


Back pain can be avoided with regular YOGA PRACTICE.
