I got in the habit years ago of using trekking poles whenever I was carrying a backpack. Our Sierra Club trip leader loved orienteering and couldn't wait to get us off trail and into bushwhacking. The poles helped me keep my balance in difficult terrain, and I found that they also helped save my knees during trail hikes. And if you camp under a tarp instead of a tent, you can use them as tent poles!
