Hi,

Is Nutra Gold Holistic, Eagle pack and Azmira, is Ok for cats?

I have been heard that Royal canin and Nutro choice was take over by pedigree company, and Pedigree ever make cats/dogs dead by kidney....

Also I had heard some vet said royal canin make cats/ dogs got urinary and kidney problem, Is this true?

Jeab,

You are looking for a 10/10 score for the pet foods to be good. Be sure to read the reviews to make sure the pet food company did not just slide through the review by not using corn, wheat, and soy. Look here for the reviews of many cat foods http://hubpages.com/hub/Cat_Food_Review

The answer to your question about Royal Canin is "true"!

Ruby,

Innova has Class Actions filed against the company related to the number of pet deaths associated with their products. Innova Dry Dog Food tested positive for acetaminophen in tests done by Expertox. Innova never posted a pet food recall.

I just opened a can of friskies turkey and giblet dinner. It is so bad my cats would not eat it. It smells horrible. There is something drasticlly wrong with it. This is a 9/10 on your list. This is not the first time I run into a bad batch. Is there no quality control? Where can I report this other than the producer? I feel for the poor animals that have no choice but to eat this or starve.

Susan,

I just adopted a 13 week old kitten and got IAMS dry kitten food for him. I have done a lot of research and the brand Eagle Pack keeps coming up as a really good brand. I can't find a review you have done about them. Do you know anything about Eagle Pack? What about their dry Super Premium Kitten Formula and their Holistic Select Chicken Meal & Rice Formula?

Lastly, do you advise a canned food diet because of dry foods very low water content?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Susan! WOW, thank you for this wonderful work you did. This is great! Am I understanding you correctly that certain formulas of 9 Lives, Fancy Feast, and Meow Mix have a 9/10 which is the same rating as Wellness Dry Cat Chicken formula? How can this be? I thought those grocery store brands contained by products and a ton of bad stuff. Wellness has so many things that grocery store brands do not...at least I thought so. Do you recommend Wellness dog and cat food? Where can I find your top #1 rated dog and cat food? Thank you sooo much for sharing your info. with us and doing all of this work so that our furbabies can be safe and healthy! ~Amber

I have to agree with Amber from two weeks ago. This is a wonderful site I stumbled across right after the horrific recall of two years ago. I found it under a consumer products website link and have book marked it and referred to it oftern. This particular page with the ratings on canned food is excellent. Now I need to find the dry food one. Thnks again for this......

Hi, a guy from the cat forum I spend a lot of my time on just posted a link to this list. What is exactly the criteria for the assesment? Brands like Whiskas, Friskies, (Fancy Feast or Meow not available on European market) were never considered "good" brands to feed your cat or dog. And suddenly here they are rated 9/10 or even 10/10... I just don't trust Whiskas or Friskies at all

SM  says:

What kind of ridiculous list is this? Are you certified in any way to be evaluating cat foods and telling people what brands to buy? How is "flavor" an objective way to rank cat foods?I hope no one is actually following your list. These supermarket brands have never been considered good things to feed your cat, only cheap alternatives to higher quality diets (read: ones without low-quality fillers, since cats are OBLIGATE CARNIVORES--in the wild they have adapted to a solely meat diet).

Furthermore, where did you get your info about the Innova class action lawsuit? Where are the news articles? If there was a huge problem with their DOG food, as you suggest, there would definitely be more information available about it. Any pet food company would not be able to cover up issues like that. Innova is a far superior food to the junk you've listed.

This list is not only stupid, it could be dangerous to cat owners. There needs to be some kind of regulation that limits what people WITHOUT VALID QUALIFICATIONS can recommend to pet owners. I'll be waiting for your "Healthiest Human Foods" article to come out next with Fritos, twinkies, and rocky road ice cream listed under 10/10.

Concerned with fraudulent Hub Authors  says:

To "SM", I'm so happy to see there are people out there who can also discern a fraud when the see one. If you check out Susan Peters' many other pages you will come across quite a few of my posts. You are exactly right in everything you have posted. Susan Peters is not a qualified pet food nutritionist nor is she a veterinarian. She claims to be a pet groomer from Oklahoma. She's earning extra income as a "Hub Author". Have you explored what this "HubPages" website is all about? She's very proud of herself. Here is a quote from her: "

"Over the past 4 months I've created 600 hubs. My hubs dealing with the recent pet food recall have generated over 900,000 pageviews. And, most importantly, I'm earning real income from this effort. Once the hub is created, the traffic and advertising is generated automatically. It's easy and financially rewarding," said Susan Peters , one of HubPages top authors. "I have enjoyed using HubPages; it's the easiest site I have used to publish articles. I rely on the assistance and support from the HubPages staff and the encouragement I receive from the team."

I don't know about anyone else but reading that really disgusts me. Susan Peters will ALWAYS ignore anyone questioning her credentials. She went as far as trying to sue a pet food company and the judge in that case said she lacked credibility. Go to this site and read the court case:

http://docs.justia.com/cases/federal/district-cour

My concern is exactly as you have stated... that she is causing more harm than good by recommending bad foods and dissing the good foods.

Oh! Please don't give Susan Peters any more ideas for a new "HubPage" like "Healthiest Human Foods", too funny!!! Please, SM, help me spread the word to all these innocent pet owners hanging on to Susan Peters' every word that she is NOT qualified in pet food nutrition. Also, anyone reading this... do NOT click onto any of the Ads on Susan Peters' pages (Ads she specifically chose) because that's how she earns money as a Hub Author.

Concerned...  says:

Tayla,

I have had quite a few outdoor cats (who lived in my house also) that never used the litter box. Your cat is using the outdoors as her little box. If she hasn't been spayed this could be the reason for her staying out until night time. She could be finding food elsewhere whether from foraging or being fed by someone. This could cause her an upset tummy... eating different diets.

As far as cat food- first I want to say I am NOT qualified in this area but I can only give you my advice. You can look for a good quality dry food that has healthy ingredients but please don't ask your vet because they are obligated to try and sell you the garbage they have at the vet's office... that's another story! Do your homework on line by ONLY researching qualified sites. Susan Peters is not qualified, she only confuses people. Jay45 on another page recommends going to: www.dogfoodanalysis.com This is a good place to start. I am personally staying away from wet cat food due to the potential dangers posed with manufacturing them... dangerous additives to make the gravy, cross-contamination, etc. Same with dog foods. You have to be careful of the dry, too, but I believe they are safer right now. You can give your cat a little tuna and some skinless, boneless chicken for a variety.

As far as grooming your pets... if it's too difficult for you because they won't let you, I would bring them to a qualified groomer. Not so much Petco or PetSmart, I have heard horror stories, I would stick with a licensed independent groomer. I wouldn't try combing your cat if she has knots because that is very painful for her... it's like twisting your hair very tightly to your scalp and trying to get a comb through it... ouch! Not to mention cats don't generally like their bellies touched. She may need to be shaved. I wish all the best for your furr-babies :o)

That complete link is:

if it doesn't work you can copy and paste it to a search engine. Ask.com will open it right up to the court page. Google will give you search results.

SM  says:

Thanks, Concerned... and thanks to your article link, I've flagged this page so that HubPages might consider removing it. Peters replied to another user above that Natura Pet Products should be avoided but seeing as how her lawsuit never went through that seems to be along the lines of defamation/libel, which violates the terms of use. I also threw in "cruelty to animals" as another reason this should NOT be available for public eyes. For anyone who's wondering what they should feed your cat: you should do research on the ingredients yourselves, just so you really know what's going in there. A simple Google search will do it. For example, look up "animal digest" or "chicken by-product meal." I only feed my cat foods with ingredients that I don't have to look up (chicken, turkey, chicken broth, carrots, vitamins and minerals, etc.). My cat food policy is pretty simple: if I wouldn't eat it, I wouldn't give it to my cat. He is a healthy weight, full of energy, has super-soft fur, and visits his litter box regularly. On the other hand, at the animal hospital where I work (note: not the GROOMER'S, but the ANIMAL HOSPITAL) we get lots of diabetic, rolly-polly cats with skin conditions who pretty much eat what Peters recommends as 10/10 foods.

Concerned  says:

To SM, I hope a lot of people realizing the truth about Susan Peters are also "flagging" her pages to help put an end to this. You're right, it is "cruelty to animals" what she is doing. If her topics dealt with baby food and formula do you think she would be getting away with this for two years? I highly doubt it. I'm happy to hear your cat is healthy but sad for all the sick animals you see at the Animal Hospital. It's a real shame the pet food industry is slowly killing our pets all for the love of money... and getting away with it. For the people who are responsible, I hope they choke on their own food or at least experience food poisoning themselves to know what it feels like.

BTW... I haven't seen any recent replies from Susan Peters (on any of her pages) sooner than 8 months ago. If she's convicted of her wrong-doings let's hope she's humane enough to remove her own HubPages. At least on the pet food topic. I'll be the first one to forgive her if she does.

Hi, SM~

Just curious, what do you feed your cat? I have 3. Just lost one to heart disease and he was only 6. I am feeding everyone Wellness healthy weight now. Am a little worried since I thought I was feeding something good. I know heart disease can have a heredity factor. Thanks

SM  says:

Concerned..., I also hope people are flagging her pages, although it seems like most of them are genuinely looking around for good advice as to what to feed their cats (especially new pet owners) and don't realize what she's doing. It is a shame about the pet food industry, and I do have to add this: generally we find that big-name supermarket brands have big bucks to spend on pet food research, which is their biggest claim to anything. Therefore we might expect that these foods are good, but these companies also know that people are not willing to shell out money for quality food and so they have to figure out what cheaper fillers they can use to supplement it. This is in almost every case corn (which I've mentioned above, is probably not something that cats are accustomed to eating in such high amounts because they are obligate carnivores). In some cat foods, corn is even the FIRST ingredient listed. This also means that because there is less meat content per bite of kibble, or can or what have you, your cat is going to gorge himself on more food to feel as full as he would need to as if he were on a higher-quality diet. Cats that eat too much become fat, fat cats have heart problems/diabetes/organ failure/what have you. This is not just me speaking from knowledge of biology or nutrition, it's pretty much common sense. Your cat needs to eat meat (another reason I am vehemently opposed to vegetarian pet foods), end of story. Certain high-quality foods will add rice products or potatoes, however, to supplement the necessary fiber in pet foods, but in not nearly as high quantities as supermarket brands are adding corn and by-products. And if they think about it, feeding smaller quantities of more expensive food is better than feeding large quantities of cheap food, since your cat will get full to the same extent.

TM - I feed my cat twice daily (with no dry food left out in between) a small amount of canned EVO chicken/turkey diet plus a small amount of dry Wellness Core. The reason for the Core is that I'd like to keep his teeth and gums healthy by making him crunch down on his food. He drinks water actively too. Both the Evo and Core are grain-free, although I believe the Core has some potatoes added to act as a binding agent and to provide fiber. I also really like that it has cranberry extract and a controlled pH system and mineral ratios that help prevent urinary tract infections and stones (I know I sound like a walking advertisement, but I am big on this food! - http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/cat_wellness_dry_co

I'm also big on the Evo (http://www.evopet.com/products/default.asp?id=1501 because of its quality ingredients. You can actually see the carrots in it. Considering how much good stuff is in it, it's actually also relatively cheap for me, about $18 for twelve 13.5-ounce cans. My cat goes nuts over it. Did your cat get heart disease while he was eating Wellness? Do you have more specifics over what happened? I'm sorry for your loss in any case :(

Okay, and just one last thing...I wish people would really devote a little more attention to what their pets are eating. I am a full-time student working a very low-paying job and I still buy my cat the best I possibly can.

To SM,

I agree completely with everything you said. One good thing about this site, even if we're no longer hearing from Susan Peters ("I" haven't seen a recent post from her) we can at least come here to share valuable information with each other... as long as these pages are here and we don't click on any ads.

You are so right in that buying the more expensive food for your pet is better because, in the long run, they will be healthier therefore going to vet less often, saving you money... and they really do eat a lot less with the good quality food, with the added benefit of pooping less :o) People who complain about the price of a better quality pet food could afford it if they truly assessed where their money is going. Surely they could find something to sacrifice and never miss it.

I have to say. I don't know a whole lot about pet nutrition but I was shocked to see the reccomendations on this page. The little I know I could still see that the author was promoting cheap unhealthy cat food.

Lately I've been trying NOW! brand and ACANA brand dry cat foods because of a reccomendation from friends. Anybody know if these brands are good? They sure are expensive enough to pose as good.

Before these I was strictly feeding the little ones Natural Balance.
