I need help with my knee pain..
61Ouch!
I need a little help...
I am an athlete. Athletes don't get hurt. So why does my knee hurt? I've never had knee problems before. Ankles.. yes.. every soccer player has had some kind of ankle problem. But knees? No way! That is my brothers area. So why now? Why is my knee hurting now?
Aparently knee pain is very common in the running world. Knee pain for runners is like ankle sprains for soccer players. Eventually you'll experience it.
UGH!!! This is no fun! I haven't ran since Monday and I'm still hobbling around. I have a half marathon to run this weekend...
I really want to run a good time this weekend in my half marathon.. however.. I'm not sure if I should push the knee any harder then I have. I would rather my knee be big and stronge for my up coming marathon in october then blow it out in this half marathon. But.. I'm an athlete.. and a very competitive one. And I KNOW when I hear that gun go off signaling the start of the race, I'm going to push as hard as I can until the race is over.
SOOOO.... I'm asking you readers and fellow hubbers and runners... what can I do about this knee? What do you guys do when your knees start to act up? How do I fix it ASAP?
Here's some background info.. my knee hurts on the outside of my knee. It hurts when I bend it.. it doesn't look swollen and it isn't bruised. I've been icing it but that only seems to make it cold, stiff and hurt more. When I stretch my IT band (well... I think I'm stretching my IT band) it seems to make it feel a little better. I have one of those stick roller massage things.. I use that on my whole leg which hurts but it seems to help.
Hopefully that helps you guys understand what is going on with my knee.... so what do you?

Hey Melinda! So I took your advice and took the half slow and steady. I even walked at times when my knee got really bad. Thank you for your help. Hopefully now I'll be ok for my marathon! I have decided to go see a doctor just to make sure it isn't anything serious.
Thanks again!! Good luck in the rest of your training!

Hey! Have you run your marathon yet? When is it?
Hey!! I just did it! the weekend before last. It went great! I finally went to the doctors for my knee and I might have torn my meniscus. They told me not to run.. but I decided I worked WAY too hard to not at least walk the thing. SO.. I wrapped my knee up nice and tight and jog/walked it with my friend. it took us a little over 5 hours. I can't wait to do another one! :o) Now I'm like having withdrawals from not running. lol I got used to the running schedule. but until my knee gets better I can't really do anything.
Your's is coming up right? good luck! or if it already passed Congrats! how did it go?
Thank you for all your support. :o)

So I don't know much about knee pain, I've only ever had a hard time with my quad muscles and ankles. But it sounds like you need to rest it. I know that's not what you want to hear, but for the sake of the marathon do your best NOT to push too hard for the half. Pain is the body's signal that something is wrong and you want to be able to run your marathon. It's not worth it (in my opinion) to over do it just to get a good time. Cause to me a GREAT athlete knows when to slow down and knows that rest is just as important if not more important in training than the runs.
I hope it gets better soon!
