How To Bond With Your Beagle
Building a bond with your Beagle is the first and the most crucial step involved in training him successfully. As soon as you bring your Beagle home, you must first try to develop a caring and loving relationship with him in order to win his trust and confidence.
When Beagles are secure in the knowledge that they belong to the family, they are more likely to respond better to their owners' training commands. Just like with any relationship, there must be mutual trust and respect between you and your Beagle.
Trust takes time to develop and respect comes from defining boundaries and treating any breach of those boundaries with firmness and fairness.
Without enforceable limitations, respect can’t be developed. And when there is no respect, building a bond with your Beagle is almost impossible.
4 Golden Rules To Building A Relationship With Your Beagle :
- Spend quality time together;
- Take him out in the world and experience life together;
- Establish and promote a level of mutual respect; and
- Develop a way of communicating to understand each other's needs.
Building a bond with your Beagle will not only help you manage him better but will also make your Beagle calm, quiet and an extremely well-adjusted pet.
Love Your Beagle and He Will Love You back
Once you're succesful in building a bond with your Beagle, you can rest assured that training him and teaching him new and clever tricks will be a cakewalk.
How Your Beagle Learns...
Your Beagle's learning period can be divided into five phases:
The Teaching Phase - This is the phase where you must physically demonstrate to your Beagle exactly what you want him to do.
The Practicing Phase - Practice makes Perfect. Once a lesson is learnt, practice with your Beagle what you have just taught him.
The Generalizing Phase - Here you must continue practicing with your Beagle in different locations and in an environment with a few distractions. You can take your Beagle out for a walk, or to a nearby park and command him to practice whatever you've taught him.
Practicing the learned lessons in multiple locations and in the presence of small distractions will help him learn and retain lessons better .
The Testing Phase - Once you're sure that your Beagle has achieved almost 90% success....he responds correctly almost every time you give a command, you must start testing his accuracy in newer locations with a lot of distractions.
Example: Take him to the local shopping mall and ask him to obey your command. He may not come up with the correct response the very first time you do this, but you must not lose hope.
The idea is to test your Beagle to see how he responds in an environment which is new to him. Set-up a situation where you are in control of the environment and your Beagle.
There are only 2 possibilities:
- Your Beagle succeeds!!! (Trumpets please!)
- In case your Beagle fails, re-examine the situation. Review and/or change your training. Then try testing again.
Keep on testing until he succeeds. Follow the rule of the 3 Ps – patience, persistence, praise.
Internalizing Phase - Finally, comes the extremely rewarding phase where your Beagle does everything he is taught to do even without your commands.
Remember:
- Never scold your Beagle if he fails. It's not his fault. You have failed as a trainer!
- You must be patient and persistent for your efforts to show rewards.
- Appreciate and love your Beagle when he does it right! A little encouragement will work wonders for your Beagle.
- Beagle Training is easy when you do it right.

Beagle training – Teaching the basic commands
There are many different reason owners want their Beagles to be trained – at least trained to understand basic commands. It makes controlling your dog easier. It makes your dog more enjoyable. Who likes an out of control dog? And it makes your dog happier as well because you are happier with them.
When it is time to train you Beagle there are some basic commands that are basic to all breeds that are good to teach you Beagle. They are as follows:
Ø Heel – it is important that your Beagle learn to walk beside its owner on a loose lead, neither pulling ahead nor lagging behind. Beagles are notorious for finding a scent and following it wherever it leads them. While doing this they tend to ignore everything and everyone around them. Because of this it will be a little harder and also a little more important that you teach them this command and constantly work with them on this.
Ø No – the word no is one word that all Beagles must learn. This command can save you and your Beagle a lot of trouble and headaches.
Ø Sit – Training your Beagle to sit on command is also another basic but important command.
Ø Stay – A trained Beagle should stay when asked by it’s owner.
Ø Down – Another basic command that is often overlooked.
Beagle puppy training does more than make your Beagle well behaved. It can also strengthen the bond between you and your Beagle. However to do this you must establish yourself as the pack leader. If you don’t establish yourself as the pack leader it will be much harder to train your Beagle and can lead to problems.
If your Beagle is trained properly he will correctly respond to all of your commands, and will not show any displeasure or confusion. Good training programs and good trainers focus on rewards based training. Reward your Beagle when he does something correctly. A treat (Beagles love food) or praise is always a good reward. Yelling and spanking is not the proper way to train your Beagle and can cause more problems than you realize. Besides, would you want someone yelling at and hitting you?
When training your Beagle you need to keep in mind that the Beagle is a scent hound. As mentioned above Beagles love to find a scent and follow it, ignoring everything else around them. This is in their genetic makeup and is what makes them such good tracking dogs for hunters. This will also help you understand some of their behaviors while you are training them. This also helps explain their tendency to be somewhat independent. They have to have this trait to track prey by themselves.
Beagles are great pets and make a great addition to any family. A Beagle trained in the basic commands will make an even better pet. Happy training!
House Training Beagle Puppies
House Training Beagle Puppies
From the time you get your puppy, house training begins. To the beagle, the home is a whole new world of site and smell. Do not blame the pup for being interested in exploring ever inch of your house but beware, the beagle will also find some spots where they can relieve themselves without your knowledge. This is a crucial time in house training. It is a great time to establish that those activities are for outdoors only.
House training your beagle will be a lot easier if you maintain a consistent schedule. It is important that you walk them regularly, feed them around the same time and go to bed around the same time. All of these will help your puppy’s body get used to going to bathroom at a certain time and be outside when they do it.
Make sure you stick with your beagle puppy during this time. When house training your beagle, you want to stay with them from the beginning till they urinate and excrete. A lot of young pups are afraid of stairs. They cannot get use to going to the bathroom outside if they cannot even get to the yard. You want to break any bad habits early and going on the porch or deck is a bad habit.
Another tip that you should consider in your beagle puppy training is leading them outside with incentives. Let them know you have a treat for them. With their nose leading them, the beagle will follow you right outside. Let them start walking around and once he or she uses the bathroom give them praise and the treat. If done daily, your beagle will become familiar with the outdoors and will associate it with using the bathroom.
Another way you can house train your beagle pup is by bringing them to popular dog walking spots. A lot of times, dogs will mark various spots by urinating. Your beagle will be able to sniff these spots out. Like the other dog, your puppy will want to leave its own trace. This will also get your dog use to going outside to use the bathroom.
Lastly, when house training your puppy be sure that you give the right response to any accidents. If the puppy urinates or excretes on the carpet simply clean it up. Do not show anger or disappointment with the dog. Make sure you have some sort of dog cleaning spray. After you clean it up, take the dog outdoors. Even though it just relieved itself, going outside will reinforce that they should be there when they need to go. And just because they went doesn’t mean they are done.
House training your beagle puppy can be hard. It is important that you do what you can. You need to be persistent, patient and praising during the process. The key is to get the dog use to going outside to use the bathroom.
