The Philippines' Summer Capital
Baguio is a city in the central highlands of the Philippine island of Luzon. Because of its cool mountain climate, it is known as a favorite summertime vacation spot. Sometimes, it is referred to as “the summer capital of the Philippines.” It takes an hour to fly to Baguio from Manila, but it is far more economical to ride 5 hours by bus. The views as the road enters the mountainous regions are very pleasant. Private bus companies make the trip even more pleasant by offering amenities and more comfortable seating.
Once you reach the city of Baguio, the ubiquitous jeepneys are a cheap way to travel. However, taxis perhaps more convenient, given that jeepneys travel a pre-determined route, so some familiarity with the city is need before a traveler can feel totally comfortable going via jeepney. Most hotels and guesthouses have a relationship with a specific taxi company and may be able to arrange a daylong rental of car and driver. Baguio is a popular destination, as I said above, especially during the summer months. Here are some options for what to do and see:1. Session Road is “Main Street” in Baguio. Chinese and local cuisine is on sale. The informal eating at Barrio Fiesta is perfect for sampling local cuisine. There are some more formal restaurants to the south of Barrio Fiesta. Other streets downtown include Harrison Road and Abanao Street. These comprise the downtown area and are the best places to find restaurants, shops, and also to catch taxis. 2. Mines View Park is a good place to check out the beauty of the surrounding mountains from pleasant environs. There are many pine trees in the area giving Baguio a kind of alpine feel that is unique to the Philippines. 3. There are numerous shops selling handcrafts, including carvings and textiles. The woven apparel is of good quality and is relatively cheap. 4. Strawberries and string beans are major agricultural products in Baguio. It is possible to pick your own strawberries, though it is probably just as pleasant to enjoy some fresh fruit at a local café. 5. Baguio Botanical Garden can be kind of a tourist trap. However, the surroundings are pleasant and well manicured and there are traditional performances celebrating local indigenous culture. Baguio is a major tourist destination for domestic tourists as well as international visitors. It is especially popular with overseas Filipinos returning to their homeland for a holiday. The cool climate is reason enough to visit, though some of the attractions and scenery add to the experience.
