When shopping for Bakersfield car insurance, before getting quotes online or from your local agents (full list of car insurance agents in Bakersfield is listed below), it is in your best interest to know what you really need so you can ignore all the extra fluff that car insurance companies will try to sell you. Like car dealerships, car insurance companies make a lot of their money from “extras”, convincing you that you “need” something when you really don’t. The minimum car insurance requirements for California have nothing to do with car insurance at all. You are required to have liability insurance. In the state of California you are required to have $15,000 in insurance for bodily injury liability for one person in an accident, $30,000 in insurance for bodily injury liability for all people in a potential accident, and $5,000 for property damage liability. Bodily injury liability covers medical expenses in case of an accident, both to the occupants of the car and of the other car(s) hit. Property damage liability covers damage due to your car hitting a city phone booth or your neighbor’s garage door for example. Although the above numbers are the minimum for liability, it is in your best interest that you go above the minimum. It isn’t that much more expensive to go for some better liability coverage. Exactly how much more depends completely upon you. Just keep in mind that you can go for more than the minimum only before an accident, not after.

Although, when shopping for Bakersfield car insurance, you are not required to have your own injury coverage, which can be obtained through Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance, in case of injury, it can be in your best interest to do so. Even if you have health insurance, you’d have to pay a deductible, which isn’t the case with PIP. And if you have PIP in the case of an accident, you can have both the benefits of PIP and your own health insurance.

Aside from the aforementioned bare essentials, you should know about collision and comprehensive car insurance. Collision car insurance is just that, insurance against damage in the case that your car collides with another car or another object. Comprehensive car insurance is another insurance which insures your car from anything that is not considered a car accident, be it a lightning strike, a moose breaking your window, or damage from a theft. Both collision and comprehensive car insurance are usually required when your car is being financed or leased. The term “full coverage” refers to when you have both collision and comprehensive insurance.

Another thing to consider when shopping for car insurance is GAP (Guaranteed Auto Protection) Insurance, which is not required but recommended when purchasing or leasing a car (highly recommended for leasing). GAP insurance applies not to damage, but in the event that your car is damaged beyond repair or stolen. Once you drive your new car off of the dealer lot, your car starts depreciating. Say you bought a car with a purchase price of $18,000. One month later, your car gets stolen. Assume that you haven’t paid any deposit or monthly payments yet. The insurance company says that the market value of your car is $15,000 and it will thus pay you that instead of the $18,000. The loan company, whom you are paying monthly payments to, still sees it that you owe them $18,000. There is thus a $3,000 gap between what you owe to the loan company and what your insurance is willing to give you which, if you have GAP insurance, will be taken care of. If you had made a $3,000 deposit when purchasing your car, GAP insurance (and the costs that come with it) would not be needed because what you owe to the loan company is the same amount as what the insurance company would give you. As such, a good sized deposit might very well render GPA unnecessary. Also, if the car your purchased depreciates really slowly, such as a Toyota Prius or MINI, and you expect to have your car around for not too long, then GAP is not needed.
