Balancing Your Golf Swing And Tempo
52Perfecting Your Golf Swing And Tempo
Many beginning and recreational golfers concentrate heavily on their golf swing and driving force but give little regard to the tempo and the physics behind the importance of it.
The tempo of the golf swing refers to the speed of the club and your body as it moves throughout the movement of execution. Most golfers confuse their golf swing and tempo, not to mention the tempo at which they should be swinging the club. More often than not, the tempo needs to be pulled back - sometimes dramatically. You need to get your mind straight to pull this off.
The golf swing and tempo relies on several major factors. The first is the grip. If your grip is too strong, it can greatly increase the tempo of the swing. If you try loosening your grip, it can allow your body to function more smoothly, enabling you to execute the movement more fluidly.
Your grip pressure may be dependant on your stress level as well. No matter how frustrating it can be, golf is a sport that revolves around relaxation and flowing movements. You simply cannot be relaxed and flowing while throttling the club with a white-knuckled grip.
Many golfers are surprised to find that the problems that they are having on execution do not stem from their swing. Many times, their swing is fine, it is their tempo that needs to be refined.
Once you have your golf swing and tempo in a state of balance you are much more likely to be successful in implementing the movement necessary to put the ball where it needs to be. Simply working on your rhythm, balance and timing can put the entire process of the swing into perspective and many times, the pieces will fall into place from there.
Don't equate your swing speed with power. This is the most pervasive complaint of golf pros when they train recreational golfers and beginners. While the common laws of physics do apply and a harder swing does equate more force transferred to the ball, the fact of the matter is that the swing speed of the club only matters at the point at which it connects to the ball.
By learning to control your swing from the backswing and then speeding it up directly before it hits the ball, you will have a much greater amount of control over the entire swing process. Which ties into a lot of the mindgames that golf is all about really.
If you believe that your golf swing and tempo need refinement, the best cure is to simply hit a few buckets of balls while concentrating on slower, more deliberate swings without worrying about where the ball ends up. Build from the confidence and relaxed nature of those exercises to further define your entire golf swing.
