Balinese Baptism Ceremonies
Balinese baptism kind of difference from Catholic ,muslim and other religions and im sure there is same meaning.
Since the baby born - the mother is not allowed to enter the family temple till baby 35 days old. The placenta of the baby should buried in front of the house ( where the baby sleep ) they believed because the placenta part of the baby soul and cannot buried them far away from where baby bedroom. Family member should help the mother with the food while she not allowed go to the kitchen and temple area- until the placenta remove naturally from the baby -which normally happen within a week . Its sound weird but they believed will bring bad luck if she break the traditional system.
After the baby one month old which is 35 days for Balinese calendar the mother and and the baby allowed to enter family temple and other public temple and even thou out from the house- after both mother and baby have been blessing with the Hindu ceremony .
The meaning of those ceremony – to clean up the body and spirit of the baby and the mother. Still many more ceremony come for the baby – which is baptism .
Balinese baptism which is held after the baby 3 months old Balinese calendar ( mekakulan ) this quiet big ceremony and big party for family member too. During this ceremony - the priest will cut the baby hair - which mean the baby will have beautiful hair when they grow up – blessing their feet so baby can learn to walk quickly – basically blessing from feet to the head . During this ceremony will be for the first time baby touch the earth .Before this ceremony held baby will not allowed to touch the ground.
After this ceremony the baby start their life and they will let the baby get touch with the earth and get sunshine in the morning around 7 am or 8 am. they believed by touching the ground all the time -baby can learn to walk soon. In my opinion – because the yard so big and baby just keep moving and practise to stand up and walk quickly – i guess.
In tradition they not allowed bring the baby out the house around 6 pm – this transform between day and night. Many bad spirits those time – all should stay at home and must be home around those time to avoid bad spirits come in to our soul and body.
6 months old baby have another celebration – is birthday ( otonan ) which held every six month. The parents will prepared ceremony for the baby – this ceremony only celebrate by the family member – how ever for baptism- celebrate by family ,relatives and the neighbourhood too.
In Balinese tradition the birthday ceremony held every six month of Balinese calendar and when they getting old the less ceremony will be prepared. If the children away or live abroad the parents still make them birthday ceremony which they do at his or her bed room – which is the symbolism of they child spirits is still there.
