Bamboo blinds are another type of window feature that can be used to give a room a specific feel depending on the type of interior design effect that you are attempting to project. In this case they are perfect for a tropical theme since bamboo primarily comes from tropical climates. As with plantation shutters or blinds, they provide a casual feel to any room and so are perfect for rooms meant for relaxing. Examples of this include sun rooms and outdoor patios or pergolas. Bamboo outdoor blinds are perfect for the sides of patios and pergolas because they allow rays of sunlight through the weave. Hence, while bamboo patio blinds still provide enough shade to be comfortable, the outdoor area is never completely shaded on a sunny day.

"Green" Bamboo Blinds

One of the great features of bamboo blinds is that they cater to the environmentally conscious community. Bamboo is after all a grass that takes only five years to grow to maturity before it can be harvested. This far surpasses any other type of wood that would normally take decades to grow. Besides being very durable and resistant to breaking and other forms of damage, it is also waterproof. This provides another reason for using bamboo blinds in outside areas where it can be used to shield a patio or pergola from a light rain while still allowing light and air into the area.

Types of Bamboo Blinds

Bamboo blinds form part of the category of window treatments called woven wooden blinds because the bamboo appears woven together. This takes the form of two types. The first are called matchstick blinds which are made up of sticks of bamboo woven together is such a way that they appear like matchsticks lined up in a row. The bamboo sticks can be either round or flat. Flat bamboo sticks tend to give the blind the appearance of a venetian blind and are therefore sometimes called bamboo venetian blinds. The second type of bamboo blind is truly a woven blind where strands of bamboo have been woven together to form the blind. This has more of the appearance of a sheet of material.

Bamboo Blind Designs

Blinds can come in many different designs with bamboo roll up blinds or bamboo roller blinds being the most common. The beauty of these is that they can be of either the matchstick or woven variety and are easily adjusted to the height required to shade an area from sun or protect it from rain. Other types of bamboo blinds include bamboo roman blinds, bamboo vertical blinds that are primarily used inside and are often used instead of bamboo curtains and bamboo mini blinds. Each of these lends itself to the more cloth like woven form.

Bamboo Blind Colours and Textures

Another great feature of bamboo is the unexpected range of colours that it can come in. The colour can range from sandy through to a rich dark coffee colour. For this reason, it is wise to buy all of your bamboo blinds at the same time so that they are more likely to be coming from the same batch and hopefully have roughly the same colour. Always check this while you are still at the place of purchase. The range of colours combined with the beautiful texture of bamboo blinds provide a wide scope for with different décors.

Custom vs Pre-Made Bamboo Blinds

Cheap bamboo blinds can be purchased just about anywhere. Your local paper or online are great places to start to find the best deals but bamboo blinds are inherently inexpensive when bought in pre-made sizes. This is normally satisfactory for most people as the blinds can usually be cut down to the required size with little trouble.

Under special circumstances, custom bamboo blinds can be purchased from bamboo blind retailers where they will make up the bamboo blind based on your specifications. This is necessary only if you want specific features built into your blinds:

  1. If you want your blinds to fit a very exact space. For instance, if you need bamboo window blinds that fit perfectly within a window frame and have a professional finish, then you are unlikely to find pre-made discount bamboo blinds to fit. It is still worth looking at local retailers, but just keep in mind you are unlikely to find one.
  2. If you want particular finishes. An example of this is where you would like the edges of the bamboo blinds lined in a fabric material that is sewn onto the sides and bottom. Not only is this a decorative feature where the colour of the material can complement the room’s décor, it also smooths out the edges of the blinds which can be otherwise rough. This reduces the chance they will get caught on something and be damaged.
  3. In some situations you may want to use bamboo blinds and yet have the option of creating a completely dark room. As bamboo blinds stand, they allow a great deal of light into a room. If you want them to act like blackout blinds that cut out all light when they are drawn, you will need to have a blackout lining added to the back of the blind.
