Banlung: The Edge of Cambodia's Wilderness
72One of the best places to experience an adventure in the wilds of Cambodia is Banlung. This town, in northern Cambodia, is at the edge of the northern jungles. This is a remote province, and, though getting here is easier than it used to be, this is not a stopping off point. There is an airport (airfield is a better word) with flights most days from Phnom Penh. There is also a road, though the later parts of this trip are along less than perfect roads. Expect some jarring to your insides. The trip can be made in a single day, although there are some options to overnight along the way. There is also a boat to a town near Banlung. This will require a car or bus trip the rest of the way (along the above-mentioned bumpy roads). As with other places in Cambodia, it is best to get around via motorbike. Renting or buying your own are viable options. In Banlung, since it is off the beaten track, a better option might be to hire a motodop (motorcycle driver) to take you around. Many of these drivers have workable English and can act as tour guides as well as providing transport. The villages around Banlung have a rather remote feel to them, and few, if any, people living in them speaks english. Ratanak Hotel is the best place in town to stay and to organize your trip to the surrounding countryside. Yaklom Hill Guesthouse has a few cabins in the forest outside town. Some travelers give this place rave reviews, although it is a little like camping, and less like a guesthouse. The market is the center of Banlung. This is a relatively colorful market because of the many village people who bring their wares and crops to sell. There are some good eating opportunities in the market, and it is a good place to pick up a few souvenirs (and some fresh fruit). Yeak Laom Lake has some great hiking trails and swimming in the lake is a possibility. There are some national parks in the area. There are a few opportunities to take guided tours trekking through these parks, although going it alone is not legal (or safe). Another natural sight worth checking out is the numerous waterfalls around the area. You will be able to organize a day trip with the help of a local motodop driver. The falls are a little spread out, but it’s worth a risk of becoming saddle sore when you take a plunge into a crisp, clear pool below a beautiful waterfall.Banlung is definitely a place for nature lovers and those seeking adventure. Getting there can be difficult, but if you are seeking nature, you’ll find it in Banlung.
