Rumors on the Internet have been flying around fast and furious that Barack Obama is not qualified to be President of the United States because he has not yet produced a real Birth certificate with his name: Barack Obama. Some people claim that Barack Obama's Birth certificate/certificate of live birth has either been forged, tampered with or in some way been altered. There has been speculation that Barack Obama was actually born in Kenya, and that because of this he cannot constitutionally be President (the constitution has 3 qualifications for presidency: you must be at least 35 years old, be born in the United States and have been a resident of the United States for at least 14 years)
Now after seeing this "conspiracy " rise to a crescendo, I decided to look into the facts myself and see if I could come up with some real evidence that indeed Barack Obama has a Birth Certificate or evidence of his birth place.
Political reporters over at FactCheck have done a good job on this story and I think they have presented some of the best information on Barack Obama, and as for me, I am convinced that the controversy over Barack Obama's birth certificate/certificate of live birth is just that - a conspiracy that has no merit. ( and this is coming from a conspiracy theorist - so I always look on both sides of the fence and try not to "assume" anything)
Now for the naysayers, don't you think that The Powers That Be check into these things too before someone runs for President of the United States? I mean come on now, how long has Mr. Barack Obama been a senator?
Don't you think that if it was that easy to misrepresent yourself about your birth that we'd have every Tom, Dick and Harry running for positions in high places ???

Well done for all the research. I'd seen the certificate but with the ref number blanked out. The interesting thing about all this controversy is that nobody in government ever questioned his citizenship. So allot of hot air for some and I suppose it passed the time for many.

You know that the really weird thing is that it matters? I had no idea that you had to be born in the US to be president (does it apply to other politicians too). Its incredibly racist if you think about: being a citizen seems reasonable (though you don't have to be in NZ) - but being born there? I thought the US was born of immigration: there appears to have been no debate about just how racist and silly this law actually is! Same with the being 35 if you think about it: thats ageist. Now what about a law that they mustn't have a criminal record: that might make some sense!
I remember that talk a long time ago when people would have liked Henry Kissinger to be President. You'd think they'd change it. McCain was born in Panama but as a US citizen so I guess that is okay. I have no idea what the rules are in Canada.
Thanks everyone for the comments- I am voting for Obama because I think he is what we need right now in a president- and I think alot of this crud about the birth certificate is being done as a smear campaign- and I think it's pure hogwash. Last night my friend just found out about how Presidents have to be born in the US, or born abroad to parents who are US citizens. Another stipulation is the person also has to have lived in the US for fourteen years straight, which is an interesting number. However, to answer Lissie question only the president and vice president have to be born in the US, or to parents who are US citizens. Hopefully one day there will be an amendment where any citizen can run for president because many of us Americans feel it should be this way. I really would not want to see Arnold Schwarzenegger be president, but I do agree with his point that qualified naturalized American citizens should be allowed to run.

The point the guy in the video makes that I found interesting was about the adoption and surrender of American citizenship.
It is also interesting that Obama did not release the birth certificate - investigators for Fact check and snopes sought it out. Obama continually stonewalls about any personal infromation. The standards people hold up for Mccain don't seem to apply to Obama.
It is not racism not to trust a man who blocks and hides information from public scrutiny. Hillary and Bill did the same sort of things and it drives people to question "what are they hiding".
I would love to know of something OBAMA HAS WRITTEN BESIDE HIS TWO BOOKS. Nothing from his college years has ever surfaced. Nothing from Havard Law review. No thesis, no papers of any kind!! Why? What's he hiding?

Dorsi, excellent timing! A cousin actually brought this up yesterday in an email. Before then, I'd heard nothing about it. I sent her a link to this story and to factcheck.org.
I think there are so many questions about Senator Obama's place of birth and whether he became a citizen of another country later on or has had dual citizenship all his life (according to one of his own websites I believe) that rather than showing a picture of the birth certificate in question to us (who are not in the business of verifying documents,) there ought to be an official judicial or executive government statement that in fact, Senator Obama was born in a particular hospital in the USA (or at home at a particular address), and that the document in question really is legit; i.e., the certificate number jibes with numbers assigned at the time, etc. In other words, the Hawaiian vital records need to be checked by someone other than vague "powers that be" who are referenced in this article- by some one person or organization we know (CIA, Home Security, FBI, a known and respected lawyer or judge, etc) who will attest to the validity. Then this thing can go away. OR, MR OBAMA CAN SIMPLY PRESENT HIS B.C. TO THE PA COURT, AS REQUESTED BY ATTY BERG A LONG TIME AGO, so the Court can check it.
Or, heaven forbid, are we saying that no matter what the facts are, Senator will become and remain our President because his persona is above our Constitution.

About the requirements for president, I think it would be a bad idea to go tinkering with amending the Constitution. I think too many Americans today would vote to do away with the Bill of Rights.

Judge rejects Montco lawyer's bid to have Obama removed from ballot By MICHAEL HINKELMAN

A federal judge in Philadelphia last night threw out a complaint by a Montgomery County lawyer who claimed that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was not qualified to be president and that his name should be removed from the Nov. 4 ballot. Philip J. Berg alleged in a complaint filed in federal district court on Aug. 21 against Obama, the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission, that Obama was born in Mombasa, Kenya. Berg claimed that the Democratic presidential standardbearer is not even an American citizen but a citizen of Indonesia and therefore ineligible to be president. He alleged that if Obama was permitted to run for president and subsequently found to be ineligible, he and other voters would be disenfranchised. U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick had denied Berg's request for a temporary restraining order on Aug. 22 but had not ruled on the merits of the suit until yesterday.
Obama and the Democratic National Committee had asked Surrick to dismiss Berg's complaint in a court filing on Sept. 24. They said that Berg's claims were "ridiculous" and "patently false," that Berg had "no standing" to challenge the qualifications of a candidate for president because he had not shown the requisite harm to himself. Surrick agreed. In a 34-page memorandum and opinion, the judge said Berg's allegations of harm were "too vague and too attenuated" to confer standing on him or any other voters. Surrick ruled that Berg's attempts to use certain laws to gain standing to pursue his claim that Obama was not a natural-born citizen were "frivolous and not worthy of discussion."

So, once and for all, HAS a real, legitimate birth certificate for Barack Obama been presented?
The Obama document is a Certification of Live Birth. This is not to be confused with the longer Certificate of Live Birth that has the hospital name and doctor/witnesses signature. If Obama was born in Hawaii, they have a filed copy of the longer Certificate of Live Birth. They do not normally give that out because it takes longer to find/copy and certify that than it does to print a Certification of Live Birth from archived data. Most places will take the Certification of Live Birth as all the documentation they need. You can get your longer Certificate of Live Birth (in spite of the miss information on "Factcheck.org" that there is nor box to request it.) In the box for "reason," you write for Depart. of Homeland Security. They want the longer version because the shorter one does not contain enough data. Obama has failed to do this. Why? He has 600 million in campaign funds donated to him. Money can not be an object. An additional note is- you could have gotten a shorter Certification of Live Birth in Hawaii in the early 1960's even if you were not born there. It was a service they provided for people who lived in Hawaii for at least one year before the birth (as I understand it.) That is why the Department of Homeland security does not want the short version. They have to spend a lot of time investigating the other details to verify you are actually who you claim to be.
I prefer to wait for one of the 8 lawsuits currently waiting to be heard on this. You can drink your own Kool aid.

The questioning of Obama's place of birth is merely another Republican dirty trick designed to put doubt and fear in the minds of those who may be considering voting for him. I am tired of the Republican attacks on Obama. they want the office but they do not want to change. As lawmakers they are accustomed to getting their way. Tough.
I was very much against Bush from the beginning. Gore was elected and were it not for the phony voting machine tactics and the supreme court handing the presidency to a poseur, the world would be far different today.
Clinton was a good president. He knew the folly of trying to fight in the middle east. So he was labeled as do nothing. The masses were whipped into a frenzy over something probably every house member has done, as if it is so terrible. Do you think the youth of America went wrong because Clinton and his girlfriend got busy on company time?
I know I paid a price for coming out early on against Bush. One time I was in a heated discussion on a Yahoo site about the war and a yahoo worker suddenly was in my face and questioning my patriotism. And I served three years, my last year was as a guest of the VA hospital. From now on, if a war is voted for, the sons or daughters of those who voted favorably should be made to serve first.
Finally people have awakened to the real threat in the U.S. I was opposed to the trampling on the constitution by the patriot act. I am also in favor of Bush facing a judge and jury, or for him, his own brand of justice, which is a military court. I will never understand how little men can convince themselves they are above the law, simply because people were tricked into voting for them.
I am no hero. The three years I spent in the army while my peers got a headstart on their careers by finishing college ahead of me I could never make up. I still feel like I'm behind, I had to retire early because of my injury and because of poor care by the VA. Because I complained, they put the screws to me royally.
This country is not what it was because of the insane obsession by a special interest group with war. there is tremendous pressure from the military and from defense contractors to get us into war. Military cannot promote soldiers in peacetime. Defense contractors can't make any money.
Bush was never good enough for his "genuine hero" father. How could he live up to his old man's legacy? Especially when the old man was pulling for son Jeb to run for the presidency.
The lesson hasn't really taken with many voters. Almost half still think the old man, McCain would be a good president. He has shown time and again he has no temperment for the office of president. He angers easily, undoubtly because of his war wounds. Which is why he shouldn't be running. It would only be a matter of time before he started pain meds to deal with all the stress. I applaud his patriotism and his time in a prison camp. He is a hero. But it takes much more than that in this "new" world. I hope the voter machines don't favor one over another this time. What could or would we do?

Right or wrong, I believe that Obama will be this country next President! However, if this is a real issue, then it should be looked into by someone who is not an Obama or McCain supporter. I have heard that the Kenya government has sealed the records about this supposed birth. This leads me to wonder why a government would seal records about an issue that never happened in their country. Another thing, if there is nothing true to this claim, then why is the info not being released to reassure people. This story ahs been in the news for four months, and almost no major news outlets have picked it up. I wonders why. One last thing, Obama was born in 1961, so perhaps the rules where a little loser back in those days. If this is a false or true issue, they should answer it, even though I can see the political reasons not to. If it does prove to be true, then this will show that he is just like almost every other politician out there.
Even in 1961 - Race would not be listed as "AFRICAN". If you accept that bogus information about Barack is being circulated on the Internet, then you should look at your own post and consider it the same type of fodder.
He should answer to a court of law with full documentation. If your employer demands that you have a drug test, and you refuse, you can be let go because of "assumed admission of guilt" by not submitting to the drug test. If you are clean, what do you have to hide?

The proper authorities would have picked up on it. I't's not like an application for a credit card. And since his father was, after all, African, since he was from AFRICA, that's more likely what would have been recorded. Taking these two things into account, even if his father wasn't a full US citizen, but his mother WAS, then he is still, born in the US and naturalized, a US Citizen, and therefore eligible for the Presidency. Which he won. Fairly I might add.

A "CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH" is not the same thing as a hospital generated "BIRTH CERTIFICATE". A "BIRTH CERTIFICATE" provided by a hospital has information on it that include the parents signatures, the attending doctors signature and in most cases ink foot prints of the newborn. A "CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH" is a document that can be drawn up in a ledal office with information provided by the parents about the newborn. This document can be drawn up at any time after the actual birth has taken place. Obamas mother was in Kenya in the late 50s-early 60s and became pregnant with Barry in Kenya. During those years the Kenyan government did not allow pregnant women to fly commercially as to prevent mid-flight births. Barrys mother had to have given birth to him in Kenya which makes him the son of a Kenyan national, his father being the determining factor of the childs nationality under Kenyan law.
Barrys mother, after giving birth, flew with him to Hawaii, sought out the proper legal office and gave fraudulent information provided on his "CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH". No documents of proof need to be provided, only the information given by the parents is required along with a signature stating that all the information is truthful. As for the newspaper announcement of Barrys birth, it appeared several weeks after the date that he was born; not a day, not a week, but after Barrys mother had all the tracks covered to show that Barry (born in Kenya) was some how born again in Hawaii on the same date she gave birth to him in Kenya.
There are too many unanswered questions about Obama that will eventually have to be answered. Once they are brought out, Obama will be required to step down from the office that he aquired by defrauding the U.S. government. Criminal charges will follow.

Leah- I would love a link to that claim that Obama has spent a million dollars to conceal his birth certificate. Last I heard was even the Hawaiian Admin had verified his original. Google it - as far as the government is concerned they are satisified. I don't know what other evidence is needed, especially after officials have claimed it's a valid birth cert.

The BC vs COLB issue is probably bogus. Obama may not want the original BC released for personal reasons, perhaps his mother did not give birth in a hospital and he knows this would add fuel to the fire as to where he was actually born. The odd thing about the address given in the newspaper is that this address was not where Obama SR was living - he was in a student dorm at UH. Also it was probably not where Sydney was living, this is a 5 bedroom house built in 1948 and today is worth a million. Was Sydney renting a room? She could have been with her parents - but they were in an Apartment. Given the fact that Sydney was back in Washington State at the end of August 1961 after she gave birth, this whole BC issues seems weird. The other weird issue is that Obama Sr. was 5' 10" while Obama Jr. is 6' 2" and he doesn't even look like Obama Sr. So who is his real father?

First of all the document shown is not a BIRTH CERTIFICATE. A birth certificate would have been issued by the hospital with the name of the attending doctor, and witnesses; ie the nurses and other information.
All this document is, is a piece of paper that states that you were born alive. It does not confer citizenship on you. Read the top of the document -- CERTIFICATION OF LIVE BIRTH.
The picture you have is a "Certification of Live Birth" its not the same as a "Certificate of Live Birth", so what you are saying is that you went to FactCheck.org and Obama's Myspace page and saw for yourself that he has a real Birth certificate? Rob, I think you should re-read this hub. Maybe you don't realize that I am only a freelance writer, I do not get paid by this site to do research for them. This hub is based on my own observations of the copies that I have viewed at various sites. You obviously know that I could not have the original copy as I am not family and do not have access to government files. Once again re-read what I write in this hub and the word "I' that "I" use many times. This hub is based on my own personal observations, not an official new release by a newspaper.

If you study the way the Hawaii Constitution was written at that time, you learn that you did not have to be a natural born citizen to obtain a certificate of live birth in Hawaii. But on the other hand, we have to deal with that small little Newspaper announcement of his birth. What I would love to hear is living testimony from people who were present in Hawaii at the time of his birth, they could testify yea or nay. With technology as it is today, you would be somewhat foolish to take any document as being authentic.
Personally I feel that when the Constitution was drafted we had no way of knowing just how many US citizens would be born on military bases in the future. You cannot take away the right to be President when their parents were serving this country.
As for Barack's particular case this subject came up before the election and the voters were not concerned. They have spoken and this should be the end of it.

Actually Fact.org did a poor job. They admit to verifying a "COPY" of the certificate. The folks down in Hawaii contend the original is not available and don't give a reason. Only absolute proof can be obtained from the original. This is what the controversy is all about.
This is not to say the copy isn't correct. But every other candidate for president had to produce an original. Obama was given a free pass here. Besides, that live birth certificate is missing some information like where the birth took place.
Fact.org is a nice starting point but they are not very good in the verification department. After they go to the source their job ends. They certainly don't seem to evaluate, compare, or look into the history of a given event to determine if the source is truly honest.

Obama has only shown a CERTIFICATION OF LIVE BIRTH. The official "vault version", or long version, is a CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH. The Certificate shows the doctor, hospital, and all detailed info (see one here: http://snarkybytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/ Mind you we are talking 1961 here and Hawaii became a state in 1959. CERTIFICATIONS are NO LONGER issued (as on 1972) because they are worthless. You CANNOT even enroll your child into little league with one (i know someone who tried).

My take on the matter after reading all of the comments here is "Obama as well as others around him the situation in Hawaii and used it to confuse the facts,and make it difficult but not impossible to find out the truth.If yoo are persistant the truth will come out.

Certificates of live birth were common place in Hawaii during 1961. Let's see his long form. Let's see his school records that show him applying for foreign student aid. He should not be opposing any of the lawsuits that are continuing to come his way if he has nothing to hide. His team is putting up quite a fight though.

Well I have to say that was quite a detailed analysis of Obama's Certificate of Live Birth. This obviously isn't going away so it would be in everyone's best interest if transparency were the word of the day. Who knows, I may end up having to wear a tin foil hat one day. If I'm not mistaken McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which was US territory at the time of his birth. That and he was probably born in a US military hospital, which is considered to be US soil.

From genealogy, the two are different, and certificate of live births are discourage from being used, and birth certificates are always wanted. Seems like there is a difference between the two, and I am not able to put my finger on it.

Nice *wrong* totally wrong and impressionable research. Factcheck?? C'mon man. You can create and print one of those "Certificate of Live Birth" images in Photoshop in just under 5 minutes using a template. In fact, the template was on the Internet and a DailyKoS blogger got ahold of it and did the crude forgery. Since then, the certificate with through three different changes to add the missing items - the Seal, Registrar stamp, creases and more. There were three different versions of the forgery.

go back and read what it says on the forged document honey. it says Certification of Live Birth. There was a law in Hawaii since 1911, that a person could obtain one of these, even if he/she were born in a foreign land.
Lucas smith has now obtained the Birth certificate from Kenya with the attending doctor's name and embossed seal and the name of the hospital.
Lots of good commentary and information here about the controversy over Barack Obamas birth certificate/certification of live birth, whatever you want to call it. The controversy rages on. The outcome will certainly be interesting, if there ever is one!
I am glad to see you put so much effort in finding out all these "nay sayers" are wrong but, my friend, you have wasted your time and if you had known what you were looking for you would not embarrass yourself with this blog. That is a Certificate of Birth you have shown...not a Birth Certificate. You being born and not hatched, should have a birth certificate. That should clear up the issue for you. Now go find the rest of Obama's background that he has spent over a million dollars to hide. Go scratch your head.
There are many serious and objective comments here about the genuine doubts surrounding this president you have elected to govern your country. It has nothing to do with racism because there are many blacks who have profound misgivings too. There is also some very serious and possibly very damning evidence against him where these doubts are concerned.
Those of you who support BO make only frivolous comments in return. This is not a very convincing manner in which to deal with the problems and doubts. Why has BO paid out over one million and a half dollars to keep various documents about his origins from the public scrutiny (what is there to hide?); why is it that Ayers wrote his book "Dreams from My Father" and he has hidden this fact (who wrote his other stories about his life); why does he try to steamroller his health bill through the legislative while denying the facts contained therein about abortion as health care, fines and possible imprisonment for non-contribution to the nationalised scheme, removal of personal choice, pressure on the elderly to submit to euthanasia counselling etc etc? Read the legislation & its implications, it is all there. The list has become disconcertingly long so soon into his term in office.
Those of you who adulate this man and who unquestioningly support his every move, like the hyppereal, superficial media that is in America these days, do a disservice to democracy long term. You do an even greater disservice to countless men and women who have given their lives to protect the freedoms we have enjoyed up to now. You are giving a highly flawed person (like most politicians) too much room for manoeuvre when you should be placing his every mode of conduct under close objective scrutiny. You all place too much naive faith in his abilities which are already heavily exposed for what they are - over-committed to specific interest groups (ACORN for example implicated in criminal activities) and very inexperienced with no clear picture of past achievement in the proper sense of the term. You are in danger of turning the man into a dictator surrounded by unelected & irresponsible high officials whose sole interest is to perpetuate the industrial-military complex but to an even more highly centralised degree. It is time, ladies and gentlemen, to stop supercilious mocking of those who are critical in their appraisal and make a sincere effort to come to terms with some rapidly emerging realities. BO is not capable of offering you or your nation salvation - he is merely a dangerous continuation of what has been going on in USA for the best part of a generation. Aliens can run to or call on their consulates or Embassy, for help, since they owe allegiance to and are subject to the jurisdiction of laws and treaties, of their homeland, not the USA. A child born to an alien mother, with no known USA citizen father, on USA soil, really should not be a USA citizen, since the parent is subject to foreign jurisdiction, and has not established allegiance to the USA. Senator Barack H. Obama II, by virtue of birth to a USA citizen and an alien, on USA soil, is a USA citizen, but not a NBC, thus ineligible to be a candidate for the election of a US president. Complicit in this saga is Nancy Pelosi, since she, as senior executive, signed the two versions of the DNC nominee certifications, which were mailed to the 50 states -- one version sent to 49 states omitted the constitutional requirement phrase. Thus Nancy Pelosi defrauded a nation, by depriving the citizens of proper representation by the elected government; therefore We the People have standing for a court case, being brought by Dr. Orly Taitz. There is no birther conspiracy, or party politics, or racial motivation, but there exists a quest to validate the Constitution of the USA. At this point, I request you drop all pretense of denial, stop protecting the man known as Barack Hussein Obama II, and join in defending the Constitution.
Dorsi, Good Article. I have a copy of Obama's birth certificate. He was born with a dual citizenship, one of the U.S. and one from Kenya from his father, as was sandard in Africa. He didn't claim his citizenship in KENYA. He only used his American Citizenship. People are prejudice, and I believe will always be prejudice. They prefer blonds over brunettes, blue eyes over brown. It is personal preference. Ivy League school over a standard university, and so on. I think that he had a tremendous undertaking, and under the circumstances doing quite well. He took over a job that the previous President had taken the US down to depression! People don't like changes! Never did and never will!
