Articles, Blogs, and News of an Assassination Attempt on President Barack Obama

Meth Addict White Supremicists arrested

A small group of white power nutjobs apparently came up with some sort of ill conceived, meth inspired plot to kill Barack Obama and happily, were caught and will hopefully be sent to prison for the rest of their lives,

CBS4 has learned at least four people are under arrest in connection with a possible plot to kill Barack Obama at his Thursday night acceptance speech in Denver. All are being held on either drug or weapons charges.

CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reported one of the suspects told authorities they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle ... sighted at 750 yards."

Law enforcement sources tell Maass that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."

The story began emerging Sunday morning when Aurora police arrested 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell. He was driving a rented pickup truck in an erratic manner according to sources.

Sources told CBS4 police found two high-powered, scoped rifles in the car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, wigs, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and 44 grams of methamphetamine. One of the rifles is listed as stolen from Kansas.

... authorities went to the Cherry Creek Hotel to contact an associate of Gartrell's. But that man, identified as Shawn Robert Adolph, 33, who was wanted on numerous warrants, jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window. Law enforcement sources say Adolph broke an ankle in the fall and was captured moments later. Sources say he had a handcuff ring and was wearing a swastika, and is thought to have ties to white supremacist organizations.

A third man -- an associate of Gartrell and Adolph, Nathan Johnson, 32, was also arrested. He told authorities that the two men "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech."

...The U.S. Attorneys Office has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. Attorney in Denver said it does not believe there is a credible threat to Obama or the convention.

"It's premature to say that it was a valid threat or that these folks have the ability to carry it out," said a U.S. government official familiar with the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

I know what you're probably thinking: these guys are white supremacists who wanted to kill Obama -- does that mean they're Hillary supporters? To that, I say, "How unfair!" These people are obviously fringe scum and someone like Hillary isn't responsible for their actions.

Of course, everyone on the Left doesn't see it that way and they're not blaming Hillary for this. Look for this meme to get more popular on the Left as the day goes on,

From the Booman Tribute,

Unfortunately, the fact that an African American will be nominated by the Democratic Party, and the vicious attacks by right wing demagogues and the McCain campaign against his character and his patriotism (and that of his wife), have apparently emboldened some truly dangerous and deranged individuals to try to take matters into their own hands.

This is what happens when the airwaves of this country are saturated with racist and ideological hate speech by right wing ideologues such as Hannity, Limbaugh and Savage

****Obama assassination conspiracy update***

Alright folks, here's the latest

DALLAS -- Security details at Barack Obama's rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.

Just the first paragraph to insight some conspiracy theorists......

Amazing (in a very sad, sad way)!!! The amount of speculation on Barack Obama being assassinated if/when he is elected President of the United States. President Barack Obama will not be assassinated, have just a little faith that America has come much further than the world gives us credit for. I keep wanting to believe that, than I realize that G.W. Bush is the current president, than I lose faith and get just plain sad.

A theory created largely to smear Bill O'Reilly has now spread to CBS News, where anchor Harry Smith today rendered Ted Kennedy nearly speechless with a similar line of questioning regarding the potential for a Barack Obama assassination.

This reckless prognostication began at the Huffington Post in early January, after O'Reilly's camera shot was blocked by one of Obama's aides in New Hampshire. See our previous coverage here, which includes more of HuffPo blogger Robert Brustein's moonbat theory, reprinted below:

The recent chilling encounter in New Hampshire between Bill O'Reilly and an Obama aide was a forecast of how easily mad dog media men can stimulate mad dog hit men.

In this case, O'Reilly played both roles. Because he believed Obama's aide to be standing in front of his camera, the O'Reilly Factor Factotum, his face distorted with rage, showered abuse on the 6'8" aide and physically shoved him out of his way.

On that occasion, the Secret Service moved in quickly to cart the offensive O'Reilly away from the scene of confrontation. But what safeguards do the government have in place to prevent some ravenous red state acolyte from deciding there is no place in American politics for a man with African blood?

Via Mark Finkelstein at Newsbusters, note how CBS anchor Harry Smith's line of questioning echoes that of the HuffPo:

HARRY SMITH: When you see that enthusiasm [for Obama] though, and when you see the generational change that seems to be taking place before our eyes, does it make you at all fearful? SMITH: I just, I think what I was trying to say is, sometimes agents of change end up being targets, as you well know, and that was why I was asking if you were at all fearful of that.

According to British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing, we would assassinate Barack Obama if he became president of the United States.

Obama "would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him."

I resent the implication that all Americans are racists - "THEY" would murder him?!?! Of course there are racists in America. There are racists in every country. Just look at the huge rise in Jew-hatred in Europe. Implying that all Americans are racists is ridiculous and offensive just as if I were to say all Europeans were Jew-haters and bigots.

Hey Ms. Lessing, you are a liberal moonbat and asshat of the highest class. Ms. Lessing, don't go around showing off your Nobel Prize. They also gave one of those to that worthless piece of shit Yassir Arafat.

He doesn't look like your typical presidential candidate and he is too inexperienced, with only a few years in Congress from Illinois and no track record in foreign affairs.

Despite these "shortcomings," an overly tall, lanky, intellectual lawyer from Illinois who had served only two years in the US House of Representatives was elected president in 1860. His name was Abraham Lincoln.

Now, nearly a century and a half later, Barack Obama is facing some of the same questions - plus a raging e-mail campaign that cites his middle name, Hussein, to paint him as anti-Israel and a radical Muslim who refuses to pledge allegiance to the United States.

With Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama locked in a tight battle for the Democratic Party's nomination for US president, it is high time to dispose once and for all of some singularly stupid attacks on Obama and to focus instead on the issues that truly matter.

IN THE INTEREST of full disclosure, I actively campaigned for Bill Clinton in both 1992 and 1996 and was twice appointed by him to the US Holocaust Memorial Council; I greatly respect and admire Hillary Clinton; in early 2007 I made a contribution to John Edwards' campaign; and I have no involvement or affiliation whatsoever with the Obama campaign.

The idiots among us who consider someone's given name to be an indication of anything, let alone political ideology, should bear in mind that there are no more American, patriotic, motherhood and apple pie names than George (Washington), (Abraham) Lincoln and (Norman) Rockwell. Put them together, however, and you get George Lincoln Rockwell, the notorious long-time leader of the American Nazi party.

Those who are irrationally suspicious of Obama's middle name, Hussein, would do well to remember that Jordan's late King Hussein was considered one of the most respected, most moderate and most enlightened Middle East leaders long before he signed a peace treaty with Israel in October 1994.

Relative youth and the absence of years of executive or legislative experience also should not be considered automatic disqualifications for the presidency. Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton were all younger than Obama when they first took the presidential oath of office. And, as mentioned above, Lincoln's resume upon being elected president consisted of two years in the US House of Representatives (1847 to 1849) and a losing 1858 bid for the Senate.

WHY IS ANY of this relevant? Because Obama has been the target of a mean-spirited campaign designed to discredit him among Jewish voters.

One need not take my word for that. Nine prominent American Jewish communal leaders, including David Harris of the American Jewish Committee, Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, Rabbi David Saperstein of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, Nathan J. Diament of Orthodox Union and Phyllis Snyder of the National Council of Jewish Women have taken the unusual step of publicly condemning the "hateful e-mails" that "use falsehood and innuendo to mischaracterize Senator Barack Obama's religious beliefs and who he is as a person." They denounced what they described as an "attempt to drive a wedge between our community and a presidential candidate based on despicable and false attacks and innuendo based on religion."

From the Jewish perspective, Clinton and Obama have equally strong credentials. Both have longstanding connections to the Jewish community. Both have demonstrated a strong commitment to Israel's security and to achieving a just and lasting end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Clinton has former secretary of state Madeline Albright in her corner. One of Obama's Middle East advisers is Dennis Ross, who headed the State Department's Middle East negotiating team for the George H. W. Bush and Clinton administrations.

CLINTON AND Obama espouse the same social justice principles as the overwhelming majority of American Jews. Whichever of them emerges as the Democratic nominee is certain to retain the historically broad support of Jewish voters.

Obama also was quick to distance himself unambiguously from an award that a newspaper published by his Chicago church had given last year to Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.

"I decry racism and anti-Semitism in every form and strongly condemn the anti-Semitic statements made by Minister Farrakhan," Obama declared. "I assume that Trumpet Magazine made its own decision to honor Farrakhan based on his efforts to rehabilitate ex-offenders, but it is not a decision with which I agree."

Most significantly, Obama's repudiation of anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry has not been mere lip service intended for Jewish audiences.

"We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters instead of embracing them," he told the African-American Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta last month on Martin Luther King Day. "The scourge of anti-Semitism has, at times, revealed itself in our community. For too long, some of us have seen immigrants as competitors for jobs instead of companions in the fight for opportunity."

THE FACT is that Clinton and Obama are both superbly qualified to be president.

What, then, is the difference between them? One evokes the nostalgia of the Clinton years, an era that on balance was far better than what we have now. The other offers the promise of a different, more idealistic, but also by definition more uncertain, future.

Clinton is the establishment's candidate, the more conventional politician of the two. Obama, by contrast, inspires the young and brings a fresh, exciting dimension to the campaign.

Those of us who came of age during the 1960s feel as if we have been here before. Clinton in many ways is the alter ego of Hubert Humphrey, the admirable liberal veteran who remained far too long in Lyndon Johnson's shadow. The charismatic Obama, meanwhile, resembles no one as much as Robert F. Kennedy during the winter and spring of 1968, before his assassination. And yes, John Edwards in some ways appears cast in the supporting role of Eugene McCarthy.

This unthinkable scenario is starting to gain steam on the internet. Monica Guzman writes at Seattlepi.com that “assassinate Obama” is becoming one of Google’s most searched phrases. The Right Wing Nut House posted about the possibility a year ago. Many have been thinking it, just no one has been saying it, until now.

We have to be honest, America has not completely risen out of the abyss of racial discrimination, regardless of how long it has been since the civil rights movement. This, of course, is sad and detestable, but it is true. The same way Obama will receive votes because of his race, he will also lose votes because of it.

Obama’s campaign has run on the notion of “change.” An assassination of Obama would expose the gangrene that is racial discrimination in America and show that Martin Luther King Jr.’s hope for change still has not been fully realized.

I pray that the good Lord protects Obama and his family as they navigate the campaign trail during this presidential election.

Assassination attempts on U.S. presidents are not uncommon, e.g. Reagan, Gerald Ford, John Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln. According to Wikipedia there have been 4 successful assassinations of American presidents and 15 unsuccessful attempts. Here's a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States

Good Hub. I agree with most of what you said, except I would add that O'Reilly is one of the biggest assholes on television.

I don't think public speculation about assassinations of presidents serves a useful purpose. It might inspire some nutcase to try it.

Are we sure it's all about race? I'm sure the people plotting were thinking about it, but if everyone would stop pointing out his skin color would so many people notice? I agree that O'Reilly is an ass!! He believes his opinion is fact and anyone disagreeing with him, he cuts off!!! At least these people got caugt, but is it really gonna stop anyone else from trying it again? It seems that every time there is an attempt or a successful assasination, the people or person involved gets caught. It doesn't stop anyone else from doing it again.

YOU AND I HAVE SIMILAR BELIEFS. THIS IS THE OE THING I DREAD HAPPENING. I'VE EVEN HAD NIGHTMARES. I THINK THE ONE THING THAT'S IRONIC IS THAT, WHEN THESE PEOPLE ARE ASSASSINATED, THAT IS THE ONLY TIME PEOPLE WANT TO GRAVITATE TOWARD CHANGE AND "PUT" ASIDE THEIR "DIFFERENCES".

I am a male. I am black. I am an american. I vote based on countless hours of reading, studying, personal, and political debates. I do not vote for a color. Why is it that everyone automatically assumes an assasination attempt would be an act of racism? Was any other assasination considered racism? No. It seems many are quick to play the race card, gender card, or age card. Maybe you should put down the cards and stop playing Indian poker. It is a lot easier to see if you're an ace without that joker on your forehead. As a black man I HATE that whites are considered racist if they will not vote for obama. What about my friends and acquaintances who have never voted until there was a black man on the ballot. I promise you racism will play a roll in this election. If Obama wins, the most racist race has prevailed. No sane person will shout racism at a black person though. It would be quite interesting to see what the nations reaction would be to a black man shooting Obama. Far different from if a white male commited the crime i guarantee. For the sake of the nation I pray it doesn't happen. But if it does..... pray its not a white male at the trigger.
