Barbara Billingsley, born Barbara Lilian Combes, was the daughter of Robert, who was a Chief of Police and Lilian, a factory worker. Born in Los Angeles, California, on December 22, 1915, Billingsley attended George Washington High School and was exposed to drama and acting early on in her life at school. Her passion for the arts grew when Billingsley participated and excelled in most of the school plays, eventually earning her the label “Class Queen” amongst her peers. This, along with her deep and rousing interest in drama was to be the foundation of her professional career.

Despite her fascination with acting, Barbara Billingsley first working experience was that of a fashion model. Her attractive features and cheery outlook earned her a lucrative contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; Billingsley looked set to capture stardom. While working as a fashion model, Billingsley honed her craft in acting by performing in local Broadway plays and upon signing the contract with MGM, she was cast in largely supporting and uncredited roles in feature films and television series. Despite being uncredited in movie roles for over five years, Billingsley stood firm to her professional career and with a long list of movie experience, she landed her first few recurring roles in television series Professional Father and Four Star Playhouse.

Barbara Billingsley remained largely unnoticed throughout the first half of 1950 until, towards the end, after her impressive performance in Professional Father and Four Star Playhouse, earned her a main role in a feature film, The Careless Years. A late bloomer in the show business, Billingsley earned her major break after signing a contract with Universal Studios in 1957, a main role as June Cleaver in Leave It To The Beaver. This proved to be the most lucrative role for Billingsley. Despite Leave It To The Beaver not becoming a hit sitcom as compared to other major sitcoms on different networks, her stellar performance as June Cleaver tackled the stereotypical suburban lifestyle homemaker and she earned a plethora of fans. With Billingsley becoming a household name, Leave It To Beaver lasted over 230 episodes in a span of six seasons, becoming one of the longest lasting series during that era.

Leave it to Beaver 50th Anniversary

After her role in Leave It to Beaver, Billingsley found her persona was not in demand in show business and had trouble finding work and landing roles in television series or films. After landing largely insignificant roles in television and on film and voicing one of the characters on Muppet Babies, Billingsley once again reprised her role as June Cleaver in the revival series of Leave It to Beaver titled Still The Beaver. While the run of the new series was not as popular as the original, Billingsley settled into the role of June Cleaver brilliantly and was largely praised for her acting abilities, even after not being in the media limelight for more than ten years.

Now in her early nineties, Barbara Billingsley has mostly retired from show business her last major guest starring role was in hit sitcom My Name Is Earl in late 2007 and Billingsley, along with her other surviving cast members in Leave It to Beaver reunited on the 50th anniversary of the show. While Billingsley never did land many roles in her professional acting career, she left a lasting impression as June Cleaver, audiences throughout the world who are familiar with the television series will always remember Billingsley as the loving and caring TV mom who wore pearls in Leave It to Beaver and its revival series, Still The Beaver.

Great Hub !! Little known fact about June Cleaver is that she was VERY embaressed by the length of her neck ( can't imagine why ) and refused to be filmed in anything other than a turtle-neck , go back and check !! She is and was a very beautiful woman, and I grew up on the Beave, GREAT SHOW !! Is Hugh Beaumont, Tony Dow, and Jerry Mathers still around ? Who played Eddie Haskell, and didn't he do porn later on ?

SunSeven,

Great Hub! I always thought that it was so interesting that she was a Mom who washed dishes with pearls on and had on high heels. Thanks for the memories!

Blessings
