Where's the Woof?

Nothing pulls my heartstrings like pets. Or, kids. Ok, friends, and maybe anything chocolate. I'm an easy bribe. Gentle words, warm hugs, oh yes, and flattery. Who doesn't love that? Even my dog loves that. Coo at him, and he's putty in your hands; a cold nose in your face, and a snuggle in your lap. What a sweet way to end hectic days.

Dogs, when they love you, and they so easily do, they give their all. In return for a really stinky dog treat, they will perform tricks, and put up with our baby talk. They are very careful not to roll their eyes when we coo and chatter that special "I love you" woofies.

If we're sad, they know it and eagerly rush to our side with a wag and a slobbery toy they just know will soothe us, once we get the hang of chewing on it.

Well, why not? It works for them. My Buddy has a now gooey toy puppy named "Deedle Doo." Cute name but I didn't do it. I found it in the "I don't remember where" store in the baby or dog toy aisle. I bought two, as they were so cute, and wisely put one up for later. This special toy has become very annoying, especially since even the second one has worn to a nub. The doggy shape stuffed Deedler also sang a song when squeezed and it didn't take long for Buddy to find the spot. Soon, he would grab it and run all through the house, keeping rhythm with "Deedlie Dee Deedlie Doo" being sung in his mouth. The song lasts exactly 2 minutes and 3 seconds. Unless he squeezes it again, and he learned to squeeze it enough times so that the song never quit.

At four in the morning, all who dwell in the house of Bud, live soley to hear Deedle Doo Sing Deedlie Dee. Buddy is very entertaining and is no respector of company. He cares not if you are the Governor of Alaska, or just an average Senator "Joe", he performs for one and all. Had we known that our initial cheers of "Go get Deedle Doo" would be so well received, we might have drowned the stuffed pup.

Tho' ragged and worn, it manages to twitter out a feeble "deedlie" when squeezed hopefully by the master dog, Buddy.

I could get aggravated were it not for the fact that we are so obviously the center of the little darling dog's universe. And, shush with the dog word, we haven't told him he is one, and don't plan on it. He sleeps with me, and I'm not sleeping with "a dog."

Buddy and I want to hear all about it, but my dog is better than your dog.

Hi PenmanZee...our kids gave us the 4 week old puppy when they left home...so he's our empty nester...which saved my aching heart, as I've always had a houseful of someones to love. Now, he gets all the attention, shared only by the hubbie and cat. He shares, but begrudgingly. LOL thanks always for reading and commenting...!! =))

I've not had a dog since I left home nearly thirty years ago, but I remember how we all adored our old black labrador, Kim. He was surely the cleverest, smartest dog that ever walked the earth. He was a talented escapologist, and could open doors and windows. He was also very randy, and no local bitch was safe when he did get out. There were an awful lot of cross-breeds locally that had a look of Kim about them!

Dogs are such loyal, loving companions, aren't they!

Dogs are the best pet ever, unconditional love and loyalty. I break my heart everytime I lose one. At the moment I have 3 cats, but as soon as we get our own place a dog is top of my priority list, (we aren't allowed dogs here). All the ones I have owned I remember vividly, the black Labrador cross who fell into a tub of yellow paint as a puppy, and we chose her because there was one single speck of paint left on her ear, the Shelties who were so devoted, one of them completely butch, and the other completely gay with no testicles, the Lurcher I had that was an ex-gypsy dog that refused to hunt rabbits, so they shot her, starved her, tried to skin her alive, before throwing her over the wall of a local greyhound racing kennels (which resulted in her front leg having to be plated due to the severity of the break) and from where she found her way to K9 Rescue, the Cairn cross terrier I got from the R.S.P.C.A. that had been dumped, and yet ended up with the best personality and character, the Doberman I had who opened doors for the aforementioned terrier and knocked your hand off the mouse using his nose if you were on the computer and ignoring him, the Greyhound who my Mum still has to this day who is elderly, gentle, loyal and devoted yet probably doesn't have many months to go. I loved and love them all.

Hi Amanda, I was so hurt about life in general..when the empty nest time hit...I shielded it well, but I was in pain. I did not want this dog or anything to love....but love him I did and immediately. I knew I would and was so afraid then, you know how silly us women can get over our heart pain. Anyway, he kept my heart going...=)) such a sweet animal, like an eternal child really!

Always had dogs when I was a kind. Loved them most of the time... was annoyed by them some of the time. Kind of like people.

Anyway, our youngest son is allergic to all pets. And they oh so want a dog. It's our family's wish to have one someday... we'll see if he outgrows the allergy.

What's not to love about dogs!

My dog is an Australian Mix. She is a bit over 13 years old. At medium to large size she is getting up their in years. She's just about lost her hearing completely or is she just ignoring me when I call her in? We got her at the shelter when she was a puppy when we first brought our house - so she's part of the history of our lives.

Your Hub hit hard today.  We found out our 9 year old schnautzer Herschel- named after the astronomer- has canine lymphoma.  He has been such a dear and my husband's best bud.  Jack says Herschel is the only one in the house who is always delighted to see him when he comes home.  Evidently all of Herschel's lymph nodes are affected and he is on an intense regimen of steroids for twenty days, then we go to every other day.  I love our vet.  He actually comes to our home.  He's James Herriott reincarnated.  When our kitten broke her leg, he picked her up on Christmas Eve day and took her downtown to a surgeon who kept the cost to a minimum.  I have complete confidence in his assessment.  I am just very very sad when it comes to dog tales at the moment. :(

Hi Storytellersrus!  your story makes me cry.  We get so attached to these animals, they become our pals for sure.  I didn't want to get attached but only because I know how much it's going to hurt when something happens.  I am so totally at this dog's mercy, he stole my heart.

He's so fun, loves to get up on the weekends and go for rides...he runs for his leash and brings it to you with a request on his face, and then carries the leash downstairs, leading himself to the door  so funny...

I'm sooo sorry for your struggle to keep your beloved dog healthy - I hope it goes into remission!!  I know just how you feel =(

Hi Marisue,

Very nice hub.  As all animal lovers, I've loved each and every pet I ever had.  My very first dog was when I was 5 years old, a collie that I named Timmy.  He would walk me to school, wait till I came out, then walk me home.  I used to play with him all the time and sing songs to him.  My parents kept him in our yard, and he had a doghouse.  I guess back then having dogs in the house wasn't the way to go?  Anyway, one day I woke up and he was gone.  I was heartbroken.  Apparently, he had gotten a skin condition, and the pound told my parents he had to be put to sleep.  My mom found out years later that that didn't have to happen.  He had mange, which was curable.  As the years passed, my mom acquired a cat.  He was a big ole tom.  He had complete reign of our basement, which was great since back then it had dirt floors and the mice would get in.

One late night my mom and I were watching a Frankenstein movie, curled up nice and comfy on our couch munching away on black licorice.  All of a sudden we heard a thump, thump, thump.  We got up to investigate.  Mom opened the cellar door and we heard one meow.  She turned the light on and there at the bottom of the stairs was our beloved cat, dead.  We never found out why, my guess is that he was either very old, or sick with something that we weren't aware of.  Back in those days the animals didn't go to a vet for well check-ups.  He was just a stray we had adopted.

Thanks for sharing your love of all living things.

Hi Trish!! Animals touch our life in such deep ways. They are helpless at times, always loyal if they are well treated. I understand about not taking the animals to the vet, on the farm, my uncle just shot them. However, he was very careful to make sure there seemed no other choice. He hated any animal to suffer. He had a dog that would round up the cows, and responded to different grunts that my uncle would make for him. they were pals. He mainly viewed animals as workers to perform a duty, yet he was respectful of them and often laughed at something they did.

I love animals and people who love animals. =))

Hi Misty!, I remember that about those dogs, now that you mention it. =)) always a way to get a pet. It's very important to teach kids not to tantalize or aggravate them as well. I agree!! One time Lynn and I had a 5 acre funny farm, and we bought two pigs. One for fun and one for food. He fed the one to butcher sweet corn and special feed about 30 - 45 days before "the day."

I cried and cried and had to be coaxed to eat the "ham." It was very tender and delicious, I'm sorry to say. I still tell him when we go back to Okla, the chickens are for me to feed and gather eggs, we will not kill them to eat unless we are hungry. LOL I'm not a good farmer's wife. One died unexpectantly and the other had to be put down (so old he couldn't walk). I waited about a year longer than I should have but I just wasn't ready to let him go yet. You know? Anyway, they both passed within about a month of each other and I didn't feel like I could go through that again. Maybe some day.

My Doctor recommended I get a dog for inside the house. Until last year, we only had outside dogs. We got down to 5, at one time we had 12. He thought it would help me with my sinues and my heart trouble to get one to live in the house with us but there was a short list of dogs he would recommend. We got a YorkiePoo. She was the perfect fit for our family. She truned a year old June 4. We can't remember what we did without her. She doesn't shed at all. She's quiet and sweet and playful, yet is also a lap dog. My sinuses and heart problems have both gotten better. I thought he was crazy for prescribing a dog as a medicine, but he was so right! I don't know how it works, but it does. When I asked him what he was smoking he told me to get a dog, he told me that there are many many things in this world that God gives us to help us in different ways. That all of them don't come in a bottle with a child-proof cap. She's a wonderful little siter. For anyone who needs help with sinuses problems and things like that, you could ask your doctor and see if that might help you. I don't have to buy sinus meds anymore. They are a great medicine

Hi allshookup!! Wow, that's wonderful! I know that there are programs that bring animals to elderly people in care, special needs kids, handicapped people, etc. It's wonderful that you got help for heart problems and sinuses!! I know ADD and ADHD kids and handicapped children and adults benefit with horse programs, isn't it a miracle to have such connections with the animal kingdom!!

Christoph, I can indentify with what you went through, as my late Husband had to have both of his German Shepherd Dogs put down on the same day, Mother and Daughter. It devastated him, but the Mother had numerous ailments, and the daughter was old too and had different serious problems. Imagine starting the day with two big dogs in the house, and coming home to an empty house!

It is amazing what dogs (and cats) can do to heal, and it is proven that giving them affection such as stroking or patting, can reduce your blood pressure.

It's a huge leap of success when we can make moves towards good health and I've sure had my struggles over the years - too much work, not enough exercise, too much stress....all led me to gain and gain during the 80's. Come to find out my thyroid quit working and that really didn't help. I lost it all in the 90's and have bounced back and forth since then. Never smoked but I sure loved the couch on my moments off and the snacks. LOL not to mention potatoes and gravy haahha
