Have you ever bought something and thought that it would last forever? Have you thought that you had finally spent the last dollar you would ever spend on a couch, refrigerator or even a bed? Or even a television or kitchen table and chairs? Wouldn’t it be nice to think that once you made that large purchase that you were done forever? You would never have to spend another dollar on any of those items. For most of us that sounds pretty silly. We know that isn’t even practical and that everything wears out.

Now there are the options of taking care of our items so that we can get a really nice lifetime out of those products, but they will eventually wear out. Like with our couches we know that if we don’t have dogs that chew on them or children that jump on them that the life of the couch will be extended. We know that with our television that if we encounter a problem and we take care of it immediately that it could last much longer than if we encounter a problem and then let it go on for a long time and then have more go wrong and then try to repair it. These things might all seem like common sense.

A vacuum pump is the same way. Vacuum pumps are a large part of our economy and several industries. We might choose to spend a lot of money on a vacuum pump or might choose to go for one of the less expensive ones, but regardless vacuum pumps are the same as everything else we purchase. It will eventually wear out. There are definitely things we can do to extend the life of a vacuum pump. There are several different types of vacuum pumps so all of these things might not apply, but it is a good check list to go through to make sure you are ensuring the long lasting life that vacuum pumps can have.

1. Oil in a pump can be one of the most critical things. You might think to yourself that running the pump without oil or with low oil levels will be alright for just today, but this can cause a lot of damage quickly. It might seem like the only that is happening is that you are not getting the best efficiency out of it, but it is much more than that. It can cause damage to a vacuum pump that can require very expensive repairs.

2. If you have a leaking oil seal you will want to replace these as quickly as possible. This is a relatively inexpensive repair and can be fairly simple to do. It is definitely work spending the smaller amount quickly than the larger amount that can occur if you don’t.

3. You will want to keep the oil clean. You might be wondering what this entails or how you do that, so let’s take a look at how you can do that. First of all having a regular scheduled maintenance program can help you keep on top of this. Many of the manufactures suggest having the oil changed at least every year, but the environment and the care you give it throughout the year can affect that time table.

4. You will want to flush the pump of old oil and debris and fill it with new oil. This is an on-site preventative maintenance that you can take care of as needed.

5. Change the worn motor belt. Be sure to check the motor belt often and be sure to change it as needed so that your vacuum pump doesn’t have to be overworked or have a belt that snaps.

6. Be sure to test the vacuum pump performance regularly. If it is not performing up to par then you will want to check the basics and make sure you take the proper precautions to prevent your vacuum pump from breaking down and shortening the life.

7. If you do not want to take care of these things or you don’t have the time to take care of these things then you can hire a company to come in and take care of your vacuum pump. It is worth the money to ensure the long life your vacuum pump can have.

These are some basic things you can do to ensure that your vacuum pump has a long life. If your vacuum pump isn’t meeting the manufactures requirements or after taking care of these maintenance things your vacuum pump seems to be struggling you will want to make sure you take additional steps to ensure the life of your vacuum pump. It is very easy to try to ignore the problems of a vacuum pump and let it keep struggling along and hope that at some point it will get better or you will have the money to really repair it, but the longer you let it go the more likely you will have to end up purchasing a new vacuum pump or be out longer without a vacuum pump having it repaired.

It is important that the first sign of your vacuum pump having problems that you be proactive. The repairs can end up costing less and it could be less time that you are without your vacuum pump. Just like any other appliance or piece of furniture in our home it does wear out and eventually has to be replaced or repaired. I would bet that all of us have had some experience with letting something go too long without being repaired. That is the worst when you find out that it was a $10 repair and now it completely has to be replaced because you let it go to long. Then there are the times that you have acted quickly and been so happy that you did.

Remember that whether it is a television or a vacuum pump the principles are the same. You will want to be sure to keep the basic maintenance up and then if it needs a repair you act quickly on it.
