There are four types of basic rates charged by car rental firms :-

1. A daily rate with a mileage charge
2. A daily rate with a limited number of free miles per day
3. A daily rate with unlimited mileage
4. A rate that has free mileage over an extended period.

Special promotional rates are often available, for the weekends, requested in advance.

Most countries will accept your valid drivers license with photo ID. But some countries may require an International Drivers Permit.

Familiarize yourself with the car rental companies gasoline policy.

Travelers should always receive a voucher from the travel agent before departing. The document should have a confirmation number, the car rental company name, type of car required, flight information and date.

Confirmations also often help the car rental firms locate customers who have not picked up their reserved car. Usually, a car rental firm will hold a rreserver car for several hours, if your flight is delayed, before canceling the order.

If you are involved in an accident or stopped for a moving violation, the police of the state will take away your license. You have to pay an applicable fine and make sure you get receipts for all payments you make.

Some European countries track traffic violations with street camaras that photographs the cars. The police trace the number plate of the car and request payment from the rental car company for the ticket. The rental car has the rights to collect the fine from you, even after you have returned and paid for the car.
