Why is oral health important?
One of the fundamentals of the overall health of person is the Oral Health. This is essential to an individual well being and quality of life. When a person has a healthy mouth it builds confidence and enables to eat, speak and socialize without pain, discomfort or embarrassment.
Pain from untreated dental diseases can lead to eating, sleeping, speaking, and learning problems in children and adolescents, which affect child’s social interactions, school achievement, general health, and quality of life. The growth of our body is adversely affected by the overall nutrition because of the rampant dental caries of the children. It affects most especially of the weight and height of the children because of mal-nutrition brought about by unhealthy mouth. The health must begin from biting the food that we eat and chewing them well.

What are the most usual oral health diseases among Filipinos?
The common oral illnesses are:
- Dental Caries (tooth decay) – It is estimated that 92% of the Filipinos are suffering from tooth decay or the so called dental caries.
- Periodontal Diseases (gum diseases) – Survey shows that 78% of the Filipinos are having gum diseases or the so called periodontal diseases.
Preventing Dental Diseases
What the ways to prevent the two dental illnesses?
There are many preventive measures for these two usual dental diseases.
Dental caries can be prevented through the following ways:
- Visiting regular the Dentist so that any defects can be diagnosed and prevented in the early stage.
- We must eat a good balanced diet and avoid, or if not minimize eating sugary foods
- We must use fluorides and sealants for a good plaque control.
- We do regular Tooth brushing and flossing.
Gum diseases can also be prevented through the following means:
- We must also consult our Dentist regularly for the early detection and treatment of gum diseases.
- We must brush and floss our teeth regularly and properly.
- We must have a healthy lifestyle through eliminating or minimizing, tobacco smoking, drugs and alcohol.
