What is diabetes?

Diabetes is one of the chronic and serious metabolic diseases.  This illness is the condition wherein there’s a high increase of the level of our blood sugar.  Wherein in the long run will cause sever damage and malfunction or failure of our vital organs most especially our eyes, kidneys, nerves, our heart and blood vessels.

Most common symptoms and signs of diabetes

Here are the usual indications if you are already diabetic?

  1. When you have frequent urination
  2. When you are always experiencing severe thirst.
  3. When you are losing weight that cannot be explained.
  4. When your blood sugar level is higher than 200mg/dl
  5. When you have fasting plasma glucose level of more than 126mg/dl

Who are commonly at risk of diabetes?

  • The children of diabetics because is it genetics
  • Those obese people
  • Those people with hypertension
  • Those people with high cholesterol levels
  • Those people with sedentary lifestyles


Ways to control your blood sugar

1. Do Diet Therapy

  • You must avoid simple sugars like for example: cakes and chocolates. It is better if you eat more of complex carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, cereals and fresh fruits instead.
  • You must avoid delaying and skipping meals. It destabilizes the level of our blood sugar that causes fluctuations which is affecting organ functions.
  • You must eat lots of vegetables and fiber-rich foods.
  • Beware of salt in your diet, it must be cut down and taken moderately.
  • Avoid alcohol. If cannot be avoided, just drink in moderation.


2. Do Exercise

Regular exercise plays very important rule controlling our blood sugar level (diabetes) because daily exercise:

  • It improves cardiovascular fitness
  • It helps insulin to work better and lower blood sugar
  • It lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • It reduces body fat and controls body weight

We must have an exercise for at least 3 times a week with not less than 30 minutes each session. To avoid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) during and after exercise, be in a habit of carrying quick sugar sources like candy or softdrink.


3. Do control or regulate your weight

You must reducing weight if you are overweight or obese by means of diet and exercise. These activities improve your cardiovascular condition and help:

  • To lowers your blood sugar
  • To improve your lipid profile
  • To improve your blood pressure control


4. Do quit smoking.

Smoking is definitely dangerous and harmful to your health, so quit.


5. Do maintain a normal blood pressure.

Diabetic people are hypertensive. Since high blood pressure leads to high risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack, it is recommended that you monitor and control your BP. Be sure to consult you doctor for proper advice and management especially if there are untoward health conditions that persist.


However, in spite of doing the above preventive measures and still there is no improvement in the level of your blood sugar expect your physician to give you medication.

There are drug therapies using oral hypoglycemic agents which you doctor may prescribe either one or two of these agents, depending on which will suit you:

  1. Sulfonylurea (Glibenclamide, Gliclazide, Glipizide, Glimepiride, Repaglinide)
  2. Biguanide (Metformin)
  3. Alpha-glucosidase Inhibitors – (Acarbose)
  4. Thiazolidindione – (Troglitazone, Rosiglitazone, Proglitazone)

Important things to remember with diabetes

When you have the classic symptoms of diabetes, you should be reminded and do the following:

  • You must see your doctor for blood sugar testing on a regular basis
  • You must act and start dieting: eat plenty of vegetables, avoid sweets such as chocolates and cakes and cut down on fatty foods.
  • You must exercise regularly
  • You must regulate your weight and if you are already obese, try to lose some.
  • You must avoid alcohol drinking and do stop smoking immediately
  • You must see your doctor for good advice and health management, especially of you are hypertensive.

The major complications of diabetes in the body

  • Blindness
  • Kidney failure
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Wounds that would not heal
  • Impotence

What causes diabetes?

Various medical science studies had already been conducted on the common causes of diabetes such as but not limited to: genetic, psychological, alcohol and other social factors.

The process on why a person becomes diabetic

When the pancreas cannot adequately produce insulin to regular blood sugar, it is where diabetes occurs.  Some times, when our body organs do not function well and cannot use the insulin properly, diabetes also transpires.

Insulin (hormone) has the very important role in the proper utilization of sugar to be used by our muscles, fats and liver.
