Youth Basketball Coaching Strategy

Basketball practice is a coach’s only time to prepare his team for competition. To use time most effectively, coaches should plan out activities in advance and ensure that the space will be equipped properly. Coaches also must prepare for emergencies, injuries, and behavioral problems by athletes.

Using Time Effectively

There is never enough time for coaches to get their work done during basketball practice, so they must use time effectively. To do so, coaches need to prepare for basketball practice ahead of time, ensuring that they are comfortable with the drills and skills to be discussed.

Coaches should also plan out the order of activities. By writing out the order of events, coaches can save valuable decision-making time and keep their athletes interested and involved. If the plan is to introduce new material, coaches should be sure to practice the drills themselves or read through instructions so they can explain things clearly and concisely to athletes.

Finally, coaches should check to make sure that the equipment and practice space is appropriate for the activities of the day. Basketball practice cannot be successful without such simple things as a court and basketballs, so coaches need to check ahead of time to ensure that all needs will be met in the practice space.

Dealing with Problems

Coaches are likely to face disciplinary problems or behavioral disruptions during basketball practice. Coaches should work with their athletes at the beginning of the season to determine appropriate actions in case athletes do not follow directions.

If coaches collaborate with athletes on developing these disciplinary guidelines, athletes will be more likely to behave. When their actions do warrant disciplinary actions, they will be less likely to rebel, since they helped set the consequences for unruly behavior.

Enforcing a Punishment

So how does a coach determine if an athlete deserves to be punished for poor behavior? In general, if an athlete is distracting others, preventing others from learning, or keeping the coach from doing his job, the athlete needs to be disciplined.

At no time should athletes be allowed to disrupt practice for their teammates. To allow such behavior is to show athletes that the activities are unimportant or negotiable. Instead, coaches should show respect for themselves and their athletes by providing a safe learning environment free from distractions and negative attitudes.

Injuries and Emergencies

Every coach needs to have a plan in place for injuries and emergencies that occur during basketball practice. Every adult in charge should know where first aid supplies are as well as where emergencies exits are. At basketball practice, coaches should have a kit with first aid supplies, instructions on what to do in the event of an emergency, and contact numbers for all emergency personnel.

Coaches should also keep a record of all athletes. In this record should be a brief medical history and any known conditions or allergies. The record should also have an emergency contact person and phone number to reach them.

After an injury or emergency, coaches should write a summary of events and responses. This will help protect the coach in case of any legal action following the event and will prevent confusion.

Basketball practice is a coach’s best time to work with athletes, and they need to use time effectively. To prevent distractions and wasted time, coaches should prepare activities in advance and ensure that all necessary equipment will be available. Coaches must also prepare for the realities of negative behavior and disciplinary action during practice. Finally, coaches should prepare for injuries and emergencies by locating emergency exits, noting emergency phone numbers, and keeping a medical record for each athlete.
