Bass Fishing in Texas
62Not Where I Went
I really had my heart set on doing some freshwater bass fishing in Texas during the winter months of January, February, and March of 2008. There just isn't much bass fishing in Southern Illinois, where my home is, during the winter and I love to fish. So I intended to spend three winter months in South Texas and wanted to do a lot of fishing while there. It wasn't to be.
My wife and I spent a lot of time planning and preparing for this trip. That's part of the fun of it. Apparently we didn't spend enough time researching our location because there wasn't much freshwater fishing in the area. We talked to locals, checked with bait and tackle shops, spoke with conservation officers, and even went to a local conservation office trying to get information about freshwater fishing. There just wasn't much available. Fishing in this area means salt water fishing.
Gulf of Mexico Beach
Even though we weren't doing much fishing, you can see that we enjoyed ourselves. We drove on the beach, walked on the beach and collected seashells, and even found time to feed the seagulls.
Crossing the Mexican border
We even made a day trip into Mexico. I thought it was interesting that it cost $.25 to go into Mexico and $.30 to come back into the United States.
Bargain-hunting
We had a great day trip. We certainly helped the local economy with our shopping on the street with local merchants. The expected bargaining was new for us but we found it enjoyable. We even found time to enjoy some adult beverages, margaritas, when we wanted to take a break. Margaritas were also the drink of choice with our lunch. No one had to be carried back across the border but we were certainly in a good mood.
Port Isabel Texas is a beautiful area with a lot of things to see and do. But, don't go there expecting a great freshwater fishing experience. In that regard, I was disappointed.

Sounds like a good time despite the fishing woes. Remind me to tell you about getting busted for smuggeling when I was 16 at the Juarez crossing. It's not as bad as it sounds.
