Bathroom Cabinets

Whether you are building a new bathroom or remodeling your old existing bathroom, it is always important to give special attention to the bathroom cabinets because they are not only essential to storage and organize a bathroom but they also set the stage for the rest of the room’s design.

Bathroom cabinets often serve as the support for the bathroom sink. Some bathroom cabinets such as the vanity cabinets not only support the bathroom sink but they often provide two or three drawers and a cupboard for under-sink storage. These cabinets may be capped with almost any countertop material from laminate to stone. Other bathroom cabinets such as tall cabinets and wall cabinets offer storage for linens and more.

When it comes to buying a bathroom cabinet, you have several options - custom-made, elegant hardwood masterpieces, low-priced cabinets. With so many options available almost any style and size is possible.

Most conventional bathroom vanity cabinets are normally 31 to 33 1/2 inches tall and 18 or 21 inches deep. Widths of these cabinets range from 24 inches to 60 inches or even more.

Custom and Stock Bathroom Cabinets

When choosing between a stock and custom-made bathroom cabinet, you may get confused in taking the right decision.

You have several options with a custom cabinet. You can get it built to meet your needs. A cabinetmaker can tailor custom cabinets to any required size from any material you choose. Sometimes it may cost more and it is also time consuming as you may have to wait 6 weeks or longer for construction, delivery, and installation.

Stock cabinets, on the other hand, are readily available on-the-spot at most home improvement centers. You don’t have much choice with the wood, material, finish, cabinet size and configuration because a modification is generally not suggested. These are more affordable than custom-made bathroom cabinets.

Another choice that you have is semi-stock or semi-custom cabinets. These are a hybrid that falls between custom and stock. These are available in many different stocks sizes and configurations and can also be modified.

Face-frame and Frameless Bathroom Cabinets

Bathroom cabinets are either face frame or frameless (European-style). Most American manufacturers make primarily the face-frame type of cabinets. Few of them also produce frameless models with European styling.

A face-frame cabinet has a frame made from 1-by-2 hardwood on the front of the 3/4-inch plywood or particleboard cabinet box. The frame makes the cabinet rigid and offers a strong base for hinges. Doors or draw fronts normally overlay the frame. These can be flush or offset. On face-frame cabinets, standard offset hinges are partially visible from the front.

Because these cabinets have rigid frame, they normally don’t have a top panel. They only have a partial back made of thin material. They have integral bases. Frame of these cabinets can be shaved to fit an irregular wall. The face frame narrows the opening size for doors and drawers.

Frameless European-style cabinets have construction similar to boxes with panels finished on both sides and edged with a simple laminate banding or narrow strip. Most of these cabinets have holes at 32-mm increments vertically along each cabinet side panel; these may be fitted with European hinges, cabinet joinery fittings, drawer slides, shelf pins, and other hardware. Flush doors and hidden hinges are common in most frameless cabinets. Most frameless cabinets normally have a solid top and back and base units. These are normally mounted on top of a separate plinth or toe-kick.
