Types of Bathroom Lighting

Any self respecting interior designer will vouch for the importance of lighting. Since the bathroom is a place that is supposed to cleanse and relax you, the right choice of lighting can have an added effect on your mood.

Bathroom lights can mean a lot of things; there can be shower lights, spa lights, bathroom vanity lights etc. It is important to position the lights appropriately, for example they can be placed above mirrors to reduce the formation of shadows and to make sure you have good lighting when using the mirror. It is good to keep certain bathroom lights like those for make-up, shaving etc well within reach so that you can turn them on or off easily. This is also known as task lighting where you install lighting in areas that are needed for certain tasks like shaving or personal grooming.

The style and design of your bathroom lights can add great visual appeal and they also add to the whole look and feel of your bathroom. These lighting fixtures are available in a variety of styles ranging from classical to contemporary and everything in between. Imagine the serene feeling of soaking in a nice, warm bubble bath with relaxing low lighting; not only can this help remove your stress but it can also have an overall therapeutic effect. For dimmed or low lighting in your bathroom you can have a dimmer switch installed or wall lighting, like sconces, with warm, low watt bulbs. You can also go for overhead lights with a special dimmer to create that romantic, tranquil-filled ambiance.

Choosing the Right Kind Of Lighting for Your Bathroom

For task lighting you can have the lights fitted on both sides of the vanity mirror, near the sink, or you can simply place a light above the mirror. Neodymium light bulbs in vanity light fixtures can prove to be a very good source of light and they also offer a subtle sunlight effect.

Recessed lights aren't a good idea above the vanity mirror because they can cast shadows on your face and make it harder to apply make up or to shave. But you can use recessed lighting over the bathtub, the toilet or the shower. You can use also use recessed light fixtures in combination with dedicated task lighting.

Make sure you don't put bathroom lights near the sink or in areas where they can get wet, because there is a danger of being electrocuted. Opt for different light fixtures if there is a glass door separating the shower from the rest of the room. Or you may want to have a covered light above the shower.

Another thing to consider is how accessible they are so it is easier to change the bulb, whether you want to alter the type of light or the bulb has just burned out; although the new energy efficient bulbs won't need to be changed as often.

Buying Bathroom Lighting Fixtures

There is no limit to creativity when it comes to the style and variety of bathroom lights and fixtures. You can choose from art deco lights, wall mounted lights, recessed lights, pendant lights, Edwardian lights and other forms of lighting. You can find a great variety of bathroom light fixtures online where you can find great deals, sometimes at discounted prices.

You can also find antique chandeliers, lanterns, crystal shaped chandeliers and other decorative lighting for a reasonable price. The nice thing about shopping online is that you have such a wide selection all at your fingertips and it is easier to compare prices.

But if you don't like shopping online you can try a local specialty lighting store or a home improvement store.  These places usually have pretty good selections as well, unless you are looking for something very specific.
