Types of Bathroom Tiles

Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are the obvious and most popular choice of tile available on the market, with around 90% of bathroom tiles sold being ceramic. The reasons why they are so popular is that they are easy for manufacturers to produce, they are affordable for customers to buy, and they are relatively easy to cut and drill, unlike porcelain tiles which are very tricky (see “Porcelain Tiles”below). Ceramic tiles are by far the most popular choice on the market.

Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tiles are an increasingly popular choice on the market, as they have several advatanages over the traditional choice of tile, which is ceramic. So what makes them better? They are more hardy and robust than ceramic tiles, and they are also often built to a larger size, which means you need less tiles to decorate your bathroom. On the negative side, their extremely heavy weight means they are not always easy to cut and drill holes in, often requiring special adhesives and drill bits.

Tile Buying Guide

How Many Tiles To Buy?

Buying bathroom tiles sounds pretty easy, and you are right, it is, but it is crucial that you buy the right amount of tiles. Buying too many tiles will see you giving away your hard-earned cash , and buying too little means your bathroom could be left unfinished – there is no guarantee your supplier will have more of the same tile. To avoid both scenarios you should calculate roughly how many tiles you will need before you buy. To do this you simply need to measure the area of the wall that needs tiled, and divide that figure by the size of each tile. That will give you a rough number of how many tiles are required to do your bathroom. Note: it is always recommended to purchase around 10% more tiles than you need, to allow room for error, broken tiles, etc.

What Tiles To Buy?

Of course selecting the individual tile comes down to your own personal taste, but one worthwhile piece of advice is always stick to light colours for a small bathroom, because dark coloured tiles will make the room feel even smaller and claustrophobic.

Installing Bathroom Tile:Tools and Equipment

Adhesive

Adhesive is used to attach the tiles to your wall.

  • Buy waterproof adhesive

Since your tiles will be in a constant wet environment from your bath, shower, sink, etc. so it is essential that you pick an adhesive which is waterproof and damp proof.

  • Match the surface

Certain adhesives are designed especially for affixing tiles to certain surfaces, such as wood, metal, etc. Always make sure that you go for the right one.

Grout

Grout is used to fill the space between tiles.

  • Buy waterproof and mouldproof grout

Again, since your bathroom tiles will be in a wet environment you should always buy waterproof and mouldproof grout.
