Free radicals are produced naturally in the human body by the immune system.  They are important to defense systems of the body.  But when the immune system no longer needs them, they are dangerous to our bodies.  This is because they are unstable since they are not paired with another molecule and so they attack the first healthy molecule that is available.  Free radicals in the body have been linked to everything from Alzheimer’s to the aging process.  This is where food high in antioxidants comes in.

Foods high in antioxidants combat free radicals in the body.  The antioxidants act as scavengers, attacking and cleaning up the free radicals in our systems.  When the antioxidants and free radicals get out of balance is when the problem comes in.  Eating food high in antioxidants combats this problem.  It just so happens that eating food high in antioxidants corresponds with a healthy lifestyle as well.

The foods highest in antioxidants are legumes (beans). Red beans and red kidney beans to be exact.  Right up there with red beans are blueberries.  These alone deliver the highest source of antioxidants according to USDA.  Another food high in antioxidants is prunes.  Besides the gastric benefits of prunes, the antioxidants present help with many other aspects of aging.  Raisins are another food that’s high in antioxidants.    There are many other foods high in antioxidants as well, most of which are fruits and vegetables.  Eating 5 to 8 of these foods high in antioxidants will ensure that you are getting the correct amount of antioxidants daily.

Foods high in antioxidants are a better source of antioxidants than supplements are.  While supplements are fine, they cannot supply enough antioxidants on a daily basis.  Our own bodies produce antioxidants but more is required.  Eating food high in antioxidants daily ensures we have met all of our needs where the balance of free radicals is concerned.  This will strengthen our immune system and have an overall anti- aging effect.  While there is no specific daily requirement, the idea is to eat a diet of foods high in antioxidants on a daily basis.  The multiple benefits will be to your health.
