76Do you know why some people are more indispensable than others in an organization? These are the people who are guaranteed of their jobs, even in a drastic layoff or retrenchment. They are also considered as the ‘heart’ of the organization. Without them, the organization does not seem to be able to operate properly.
Actually, anyone can be the indispensable employee in any organization. It all depends on your choice. If you want to maximize your job security, then you have to work hard to position yourself as someone the organization wants to keep on the payroll at all times.
How to Make yourself Indispensable to your Immediate Boss
- Volunteer for routine tasks
These are the tasks that others think are boring and unexciting. However, be tactful and discreet. Remember to give excuses that people like to hear when you are asked why you do them.
Do not however, waste your time doing routine tasks that will not get you any recognition from your boss. Should you find yourself wasting time and effort doing unimportant tasks, stop immediately.
No matter what you do, remember to be discreet. You do not want your co-workers to think that you are trying to get on the good side of your boss. You need your boss, but your co-workers are important too!
- Choose the types of jobs that will get your boss to notice you
Choose projects with tight deadlines, or just about any job that your boss cannot complete alone. However, choose carefully and do not put yourself in a tight spot. Weigh your options carefully.
If you know you may not be able to complete a task before a deadline, get help from your co-workers. Then, show your appreciation of their help by praising them in front of your boss. By doing so, you are making a good impression of yourself to your boss and co-workers.
Just remember not to overact and make a mess of the situation. A good boss always knows when his/her employees are acting. So do your job just right.
- Learn to do some of your boss’s chores
This helps not only to relieve the pressure on your boss; he/she may even greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness. You have learned something new when you volunteer to help. Believe it or not, your boss’s dependent on you may also increase.
Take the opportunity to make something of your talents. Learn to lead and shoulder responsibilities like a leader. Everything you have learned at this stage will come in handy later.
- Do not wait to be asked to do something
One very exceptional trait of an indispensable employee is, he/she knows what to do without being asked. He knows his duty and routine well.
As an indispensable employee, you need to adopt this trait too. Do not wait for your boss to ask if you want the tasks. Inform your boss that you and your team will gladly do the task.
- Make yourself the person your boss can turn to
Your boss can turn to you whenever there are tough tasks. This will increase your value in his/her eyes. Not only this, you may have also earned the trust of your boss when he/she confide in you some private matters. Do not betray the trust by gossiping behind him/her!
Your boss may even trust you with all types of responsibilities. Do take advantage of this situation to learn as much as you can. Being indispensable here enables you to upgrade yourself on the job; you will find yourself being the candidate of many better opportunities later on.
- Update your boss on various aspects
Your boss may not need this; however he/she may find it extremely useful and convenient when you volunteer to do so. Update your boss about aspects of your job which are of particular significance to him and the organization.
Give your boss important feedbacks that will help him/her to present to the top management. Make sure your reports are properly researched and well written. You can volunteer to do some research for your boss should there is a need.
- Study your boss carefully
Know what your likes and dislikes. Do not hurry yourself. It does take time to observe and understand one’s behavior. Sometimes, you will also get a lot of useful tips from the office gossipers. Learn from them.
All bosses love their employees show them loyalty. Show your boss your loyalty. Do not talk behind him/her. Do not do anything that will hurt your relationship with your boss.
- Working with other managers
Soon, you will find yourself handling many tasks that will increase your value as your boss has much confidence in you. You success with your current boss may even cause you to be invited to work with other managers who can potentially influence your career.
Do the jobs assigned well. Remember you are an indispensable employee. You can work with anyone because you are a professional. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes along your way.

You may know this all along: All bosses like pleasant employees. Why? They are easy to work with and do not complain much! So, be one!
It does not take much to be pleasant. Smile and be polite to everyone. Polish your communication skills if you need to. Show respect to everyone. Do not get involve in any kind of office politics. Remember not to backstab, gossip, or do anything that will hurt your own reputation.
However, before you decide to become that indispensable employee, think carefully if it is worth your effort. You will be sacrificing more time at work. You may have to sacrifice your family or friends for your job.
Many people prefer to be ordinary employees than be the indispensable ones. However, many people also loss their jobs because they are just ordinary employees! So, if you want job security, be that indispensable employee your organization cannot do without!
