You can express the way you feel about that special someone in your life or her flowers.

In Victorian times, complex messages were often exchanged simply by giving someone a flower, says landscape designer Bonnie Wodin, and roses had a special language all their own:

Offering a single rosebud: I love you

Rose in full bloom: You are beautiful

Open rose above two buds: Keep this secret

Single white rose: Worthiness of the receiver

Yellow rose:  Jealousy on the part of the giver

The way a flower was presented or received also spoke volumes, Wodin Says:

Flowers with blooms facing upward: My message is favorable

Flowers with blooms facing downward: My message is unfavorable

Flowers given with the right hand: I agree with you

Flowers given with the left hand: I disagree with you

Kissing a flower upon receipt: Yes

Discarding a petal: No

Flower pinned over the heart upon receipt: I love you.

Even the type of flower given offered a message.

Apple blossoms meant Hope

White carnation meant a woman’s love

Daisy: Cheerfulness

Forget-me-not: True love or remembrance

White hyacinth: Beauty

Ivy: Loyalty or fidelity

Violet: Modesty
