Be the Best at Blitzball
71What is Blitzball?
Blitzball is a game played on Spira, the setting for The Playstation 2's hit game Final Fantasy X(10). It's Played in giant sphere of water. Two teams of six battle it out to score goals much like in soccer. How ever through the use of verious Tackles and "dirty shots" it's a bit more like Rugby if you think about it. It's Spira's world past time. The Major teams are The Besaid Aurochs, The Luca Goers, the Kilika Beasts, the Al Bhed Psychs, The Ronso Fangs, and the Guado Glories.
Okay how does this work?
Let's start at the begining by talking about Stats.
-
Level: You players' Blitzball level is not counted as a stat, but it is what
determines your stats - the higher your level, the better your stats
(in theory!). Players raise their Blitzball levels by performing various
moves in the match. They will gain EXP for every pass, shot, etc. which
will result in players levelling up. -
HP: (NOTE: This is not based on your HP in the 'outside world')
Hit Points(HP) are what the player uses every time s/he moves with the ball,
and whenever s/he performs an action or special technique. When you choose
to perform an action, the amount of HP needed will be shown on screen.
Players regain HP whenever they don't have the ball. If a player ever has
0 HP, s/he will be unable to participate in the match.(This is extremely
rare) -
SP: Speed(SP) is how quickly a player moves during the game(with and without
the ball). Faster players will be better able to get into good positions
than slower players. Speed is moderatley important for every player(except
the Goalkeeper). -
EN: Endurance(EN) is the amount of damage a player can take from opposition
players when s/he has the ball. When breaking through opposition players
(explained later), a player uses up EN, if his/her EN is 0 after the
encounter, the other player will gain possession of the ball. The
more EN a player has, the better chance s/he has of breaking through
numerous tackles. Endurance is important in Midfield and Forward players
as it is needed to break through tackles in order to shoot on goal. -
AT: Attack(AT) is the opposite to Endurance(EN). Attack is used by the
defensive player during an encounter, and determines how much damage
the player will inflict on the player with the ball. If your AT is
higher than the opposing player's EN, then there is a very good
chance that you will get the ball from the other player. High AT
is important in defensive players, as it will stop players who are
approaching your goal. -
PA: Passing(PA) determines how far and how fast a player can pass the ball.
The higher the PA rating, the more chance the ball has of ending up
in the receivers hands. Passes can be blocked by defensive players
which have not be broken through. The defensive player will try to
block the pass, and can take some of the power/speed off it - this is
determined by the players Blocking(BL) rating. Note: The defensive
player will not always block the pass. If PA drops to 0 during
the block, the defender will get the ball. If PA falls to 0 after
the block, but before it reaches the receiver, the receiver will
fumble it. The PA rating will drop as the ball travels through the water,
due to the friction of the water. High Passing is important in all players,
but especially in Midfield players. -
BL: Blocking(BL) indicates the chance that a player will block shots or
passes. The BL stat is used against PA and SH during passes and shots.
The higher the BL rating, the more chance you have of intercepting
the pass/shot. Note: sometimes the defensive player may not be able
to block passes/shots. The Blocking attribute is important for
defenders, in order to block shots on goal and passes to open players. -
SH: Shooting(SH) is the power and pace of the shot towards goal. The higher
the SH attribute, the better chance the player has of scoring a goal.
The power of the shot can be lowered by defensive player's BL stat.
When a shot is taken on goal, the SH rating and the Goalkepper's CA
rating are used to determine if the shot will be successful or whether
it will be saved/caught by the Goalkeeper. The SH rating will drop as the
ball moves through the water. Shooting is the most important attribute in
Forwards. -
CA: Catching(CA) is only used by the Goalkeeper, and is used to determine if
the Goalkeeper will save the shot. A Goalkeeper with a high CA rating
has a better chance of stopping incoming shots. The Catching attribute
is only important in Goalkeepers.
You move about on teh Feild using hte directional Buttons. OR you can have your players move around automaticly...Which I don't really Care for. Square Button is used to stop your movement and Preform an Action (Passing, shooting, or dribbling) and Circle is used to change your formation.
Once you have the movements down and the buttons It's Time to Blitz!
Unlike the fancy CGI Sequences there will be lots of stopping in the game for Encoutners. Dependign on if you have the ball or not depends on what you do. If you have teh Ball and you are stopped by the opposing team it's time to choose what you do! You can Breakthrough or not...Breaking through allows one or more opposing players to make an attack agisnt your endurance. But if your character survives the attack it removes one or more people from blocking making it easier to Pass or Shoot the Blitzball.
When you do not have teh blitzball and you stop an opposing player, What is done is detirmed by the person who has teh ball. IF they choose tyo break through your defenders will attack. If they choose to merely block or shoot your defenders will try and block the ball lowering the Shot or Pass value.
During attacks if the Endurance is lowered to Zero the ball is taken, and when passing or shooting the same applies.
When Passing, as the ball travles the Passing stat lowers, it reaches Zero before the player it is passsed to gets the ball the player misses the catch.
When no one Blocks and a player shoots for a goal. The Shot stat of the shooter and the Catch stat of the Goalie are challanged. Much like with Passign as the Shot travels dow nteh feild the Shot Value goes down. The Catch value is then subtracted from teh Shot Value when it get's to the goal and if even 1 shot is left the goal will be successful. Otherwise the Goalie will catch it.
Players or Skills?
You Start with the Besaid Aurochs... a group of guys who haven't won a game in over ten years.. luckily you'll only be saddled with the core of the team for one game. After that you can scout out Blitzers from every Corner of Spira! Recuiting players is probably one of the best parts of the game.
Because your starting team basicly ...there is a reason they haven't won a game in over ten years.
The abilities you equip to your players are also important. I like anything with Wither in the namebecause it lowers teh oppositions just about everythign one stat at a time. Soem key shooting abilities you can learn are Sphere shot, Witehr Chot, and only the main character of the game Tidus can learn the powerful Jehct Shot which knocks two opposing players out of the way so they can't block your shot.
But I think the right team is most important and there are several key players to watch out for. The First is Jumal!
Jumal will be in Luca sitting on a bench. He doesn't look like much but he is an awesome goalie! he will block every shot!
the Second player to be on the look out for is Brother, he gains levels fast and his block and pass are through teh roof. His shot isn't so bad eitehr.
Wakka the orginal Captian of the Besaid Aurochs will be accessible after Home has been dystroyed.
Thos are a good three to have. Now all Players run on a contract. And once their contract is up you can choose to resign them or let them become free agents. And their contracts expire weatehr they arein teh game or not. This also works for other teams. Always be on the look out for Nimrook goalie of the Al Bhed Psychs. He is a better Goalie than Jumal. But if you are playing aginst a team and say "hey I think that player would be a realyl good adition to my team" then be on the look out for them their contract expires.
