A Secret Location for a Beach Wedding, Nicaragua Style

This is a story as told to me by a female friend of mine, Houda.  Enjoy.

A close friend of mine made the decision to have a beach wedding in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. This amazing spot is considered a secret getaway amongst travelers in-the-know. And coming from a vacation in Granada, the wedding was a easy pit stop for me so I made plans to join the celebrations. Not to mention, I've always wanted to visit San Juan del Sur ever since I heard about the annual skateboard competition held there.

A Detour I Never Expected

I departed Granada for San Juan del Sur and planned on visiting Bahja Majagual upon 2 Canadian travelers insisting it's a must see site.  However, what was originally supposed to be a quick 2 hour trip turned into a 5 hour headache.

Because I missed my turn to Majagual, I had to take an unfortunate detour on unpaved roads and wooden bridges that seemed like they were about to give out under the car's weight.  When it seemed like nothing worse could happen, the car started breaking down and I had to pull out to the side of the road only to discover that the engine had overheated.

Truly a Sight to Behold

I got to San Juan del Sur a little past one o'clock, weary and tired from traveling. But my unfortunate detour started to disappear from my memory as I looked at the sight in front of my eyes. I was standing in one of the most beautiful beaches in Nicaragua and couldn't wait to spend some time in the sun. I rushed to the hotel room to unpack and clean up. After I was done, I wasted away sunbathing as I rocked back and forth in a hammock along the coast.

Luckily, the Wedding Was Still 2 Days Away

That's two whole days to explore San Juan del Sur and experience the area.  I explored the town, checking out the local shops and dining along the seaside restaurants.  Eventually I found a great little place with its own pool and bar.  I was in the main part of town called the Bambu Beach Club.  The owner Eric made sure my stay there was hospitable. The following day was the celebration of the patron saint fishermen.  Overall it was fun to watch the orchestra perform.

The NHL in Nicaragua?

As I was heading back to my hotel room, the weirdest thing caught my eye.

An ad was displayed saying there was going to be an NHL event. Because I have lived in New York, I automatically thought that it was going to be your typical hockey match held in an ice rink. I wouldn't have thought they'd have a hockey match in this sunny laid back area. But when I looked closer I realized it wasn't the national hockey league, it was the Nicaragua Hockey League.

Rather than being held in an ice rink, it was a hockey game that was played no the road.  So I decided to be spontaneous and go watch the game.  I didn't expect it to be so popular in San Juan.

I spent an hour cheering for the Sanjuaneno team as they played against Gigante United.  After the game, I wanted some leisure time so I met up with my friend and her female guests, then decided to spend the rest of the day at the Luna Bella Day spa in Piedras y Olas (a Pelican Eyes Resort).

Finally the Beach Wedding Celebrations

After the whole spa treatment, we headed to a restaurant where reservations were made for the bride to be and all the guests. We dined at this private seaside restaurant where local food was provided for a great price. Next, we went dancing at a disco to burn off the meal and celebrate the bachelorette party. Finally, it was time for a beautiful beach wedding in Nicaragua to start and there was nothing that could possibly go wrong.
