The Beach Cruiser
A beach cruiser is typically a single geared bicycle that you reverse pedal to brake. Made popular in the 1950s by Schwinn, they have since greatly increased in popularity relative to other bicycles on the market. They are best used on flat surfaces and at low speeds and have been known to work on hard packed sand as well.
Beach cruisers generally have heavy, steel frames and wide tires. This combination makes them relatively slow in comparison to either a road bike or a mountain bike. Certainly, this type of bike is not built for hills but for flatter surfaces. However, due to modern, lighter materials, the beach cruiser is reviving and making inroads as a comfort bike, even far from the beach. Beach cruisers are now available with multi-speed gearing system as well.
