Mui Ne, Vietnam

Mui Ne was once a sleepy seaside town insulated from the rest of Vietnam by miles of dragon fruit plantations and poor roads. The beaches proximity to Ho Chi Minh City has led to massive development. Resorts now line the several miles of beachfront near the city. Still, the crowds do not reach the same number as more established resort towns like Nha Trang. The busy port town of Vung Tau is nearer to Ho Chi Minh City, but lacks a true swimming beach.

The beach road does have numerous resorts and restaurants, but it does not have a busy or over-developed feel. The shade and cool ocean breezes make the beach road the prefect venue for an evening stroll.

As with other seaside areas in Vietnam, seafood is a specialty. Some beachside restaurants offer local fare at reasonable prices. Large shrimp cooked in coconut milk is one dish not to be missed, as is the various species of fish cooked in a broth with tamarind and pineapple.

Vietnam’s southern coastline in home to fish sauce producers. It’s possible to tour the factories that produce the pungent brew. The fish sauce itself has a pleasant, salty taste. The smell of anchovies (known as rice fish to the Vietnamese) is unmistakable, though. Because of this, fish sauce is usually an acquired taste for visitors. Those who find they enjoy the sauce can purchase a bottle directly from a vendor.

Because it is a resort area, Mui Ne is generally more expensive than less popular destinations in Vietnam. Expect to pay about 25% more for accommodations during high season (December through March). The town of Mui Ne itself is a bustling city with an interesting market and a plethora of street stalls hawking tasty soups and rice. A trip to the docks in town is worthwhile. Life is in full swing here, with fishing boats and commerce moving ahead at full speed, seemingly oblivious to the leisure taking place nearby.

There are sand dunes along the coast. This “mini-desert” is a favorite spot for travelers. Any motorcycle driver will know where the dunes are. The ride to get there is pleasant and short.

Water sports abound in Mui Ne. Wind and kite surfing are favorites, though the beach is clean and swimming is a good option. Most guesthouses rent equipment or can put travelers in contact with someone who does. Place that rent equipment can also organize a lesson.

Mui Ne is no longer an undiscovered gem, but it still retains its quiet charms and clean beach.
