Bears In Our Backyard!
84Big Black Bear
This big guy would come for a visit every morning while we were having our coffee.Cat isn't worried about this bear.
Black Bear with white patch
Our cat's name is Wanabe because he wants to be a Cougar he attacks everything that comes into our yard including bears.
We had to stop feeding our birds. We wanted this big guy to stop coming so close to the house.
We never knew when we would walk out the door if he would be on our deck.
Black bears will usually run if they see you or hear a sound but if black bear attacks they attack to kill do not play dead fight them back and try to get away. You can try backing away slowly first. Don't try climbing up a tree they are good climbers and often climb to the top of our big trees.
I also think the bears here can smell the food in the house and that brings him around, not much we can do about that we have to eat.
My photos are not real clear here but I had to take them from inside the house and through the screen.
The first big bear is right by our back door and our deck the black item to the right is our grill with a cover on it. The bear with the white spot is in our meadow taken with a field camera. We can see the meadow from our back door. My husband mows me a path down to the meadow and back up to the yard. I often walk the path to get my exercise but I try to make sure to take one of the dogs with me.
Last year we had a mother bear with three cubs. We also had what my husband thought was last years cub because of it's smaller size. So that adds up to 7 different bears just in our yard that we saw.
Black Bear Attacks
In the 2000's Black bears have killed 15 people. That doesn't count the people who were attacked and survived.
2001 a black bear entered an elderly women's house and killed her. She was 93.
2001 a black bear killed a baby girl while sitting in her stroller on her porch at her home in New York.
We use to rarely see the bears here. We saw them at the dumps but then they closed all the old dumps and then the bears started coming to homes looking for food.
The world record weight for an American black bear is 880 pounds.
We have friends, their daughter was attacked by a black bear. The dad and his daughter had gone deer hunting. The daughter was 14 and she ran into a black bear in the woods the bear came after her and she managed to get up a tree and made all kinds of noise trying to get the bear to leave. He wouldn't leave he came up the tree and got hold of her foot and pulled her down. She was screaming and her dad and the other man that was with them heard her and came running. The bear was dragging her further into the woods. They ran him off but she had already been hurt. The bear had mauled and bit her. She had to have many, many stitches to close up all the bites.

Running into bears.
Have you ever ran into a bear?
See results without votingTUESDAY EVENING 10/14/2008
On Tuesday Evening when this lady let her dogs out they ran into a black bear. This is not far from where we live. Goes to show how you always have to look before going outside and checking before letting the dogs out. Our dogs would have done exactly the same thing.
BEAR ATTACK!
Daily News Report
Springer Spaniel survives bear attack!
Lori Oelrich knows this firsthand. On Tuesday night when the 10 p.m. news was over, Oelrich let her two springer spaniels out of her home just outside of Rhinelander on Highway K before going to bed. She instantly knew something was wrong.
"I've never heard a dog scream like that before," she said.
The dogs, Copper and Nick, had busted a black bear rooting through the garbage cans on the side of the garage.
"It was just terrible," Oelrich said. "He was nosing by the garbage and he startled the dog and the dog startled him."
A battle between the bear and Nick, the older of the two dogs, ensued. Oelrich said every time the dog got away the bear took him back in its grasp. The bear finally let go for good just a few feet from the Oelrich's front steps, but it didn't look good for Nick.
The dog was bloodied from head to tail, as was Copper, who stayed close to Nick. At that moment, Oelrich didn't know Copper had escaped the attack because of the blood on his white fur.
Oelrich and her husband, Al, who awoke to his wife's calls for help, hurriedly called their veterinarian and rushed the dog in.
Oelrich said she was so nervous and scared she could barely dial the phone.
Nick had one tooth knocked out and gashes on his neck, sides and hind quarters.
The veterinarian pulled the tooth and was able to stitch up the wounds, but the shaved fur, stitches and drainage tubes are a very real reminder of what happened so close to their front door.
"It makes me a little leery to go outside at night now," Oelrich said. "It's terrible to have something like that happen to one of your dogs."
Oelrich reported the incident to the Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Services, which handles nuisance bears, but the bear wasn't considered to be a nuisance.
If the bear continues to return after the garbage cans or other attractants are removed, then it would be considered a nuisance, according to DNR deer and bear ecologist Keith Warnke.
The garbage cans are what attracted the bear to Oelrich's yard, and attractants are the biggest source of bear problems.
"Anything even remotely related to bear food is going to be attractive," Warnke said.
Bird feeders, deer feeders and garbage cans can all draw bears to places they wouldn't ordinarily go. Even if garbage cans are in the garage, bears can often smell them.
"Garbage cans are a huge attractant to the bears," Warnke said.
Even if there are no attractants in your yard, that might not be the case with the neighbors, so bears may have a reason to be in the area.
Warnke advises keeping dogs close and under control when they're let out to avoid situations like Oelrich's.
"Dogs tend to get hurt when they end up cornering a bear or surrounding a bear," Warnke said.

haha! the kitty cat's like, WTF?! get off of my property bear!
I can't say I've ever seen a bear around these parts. Nice photos.
Thes pictures are amazing! Your tips for dealing with bears are helpful, too.
Hi moonlake bears are that plentiful there do you ever see them moving or coming this far south to Iowa thanks for the great hub reading thanks for becoming my newest fan too more scary hauntings on my hub ~cool~cya
Scary! I hope the bears don't do your family, home and pets any harm!
We make sure we watch for them if we go outside. They are often on our deck so we have a light that comes on when they get on the deck or anything else that happens to come on the deck.
Very nice hub. I live in NY, not too far from where that baby was killed in 2001 as you mentioned above. :( We have seen two black bears by our home.  Both of the bears were just strolling down our street. We got one on video. They were just so amazing to see!
Bears are amazing and mostly they run when they see anyone. Thanks for your comments.
I love your photos moonlake.
Thanks ADB.
PA bear attack:......A woman who was mauled by a black bear Monday night was treated at an area hospital and released, according to state Game Commission officials, who are investigating the encounter.A 44-year-old woman and her dog were attacked when they encountered a black bear in the 200 block of Dunwoody Road, Plunketts Creek Township, said rescue personnel who were called to the scene.Attacks by black bears on humans are rare, according to commission officials at the agency’s Northcentral Region office in Antes Fort.According to Wildlife Conservation Officer Jon Wyant, the woman went outside her home near Barbours to take her bird feeders down and let her dog out between 9 and 9:30 p.m.“Right outside the patio door, the dog went after the bear and the woman went after the dog,” Wyant said. “The bear swatted the dog and the dog had to be euthanized. The woman went to go back toward her house and the bear caught her. She had bites on her leg, damage to her hand, and the bear may have swatted her on her head.”
This is so dreadfully scary - are the bears protected? and are you allowed to shoot them? re your last comment moonlake that poor woman losing her dog but TG she had the dog to initially protect her or her outcome may well have been worse! we don't have bears here, so the closest you can get to a bear is in a zoo!
Yes you can shoot bears during bear season which is goin on right now. If you have a bear that is really in your yard all the time and won't leave they will come and trap it and move it to another area away from humans. The problem we have is that we get so many. This year was better because we stop feeding the birds and that has helped. We don't like it because we love to feed birds and will again when winter comes.
Moonlake, Terrific pictures and great information on what to do if encountering a bear. We ran into our first bear while walking on a trail in the Smoky Mountains in Cades Cove 9-21-2008. Eddie spotted the cub bear first and pulled me back to keep from running into it. I backed away slowly, while Eddie got his camcorder out and got a great video. When Eddie started backing away, the bear followed Eddie until he made a movement toward the bear and Eddie changed directins while backing away. The bear finally moved to the right of the trail and went up over the mountain. Thank goodness mama bear never showed up. Barbie
Thanks Barbie for stopping by my hub.
Moving up here near the bears was a little different. My mother is scared to death that they bears are going to run into the house and take the kids. We've seen 4 including a mother and her young. They leave as soon as they hear the door crack open so that we can get a picture.
The big bear in this picture didn't seem to care that we were around. My mother also worries about the bears here. Thanks for comments.
We had a big black bear in our backyard in Minnesota last year. I was outta there in a heartbeat and back inside the house :) Thanks for the pics.
They are fun to watch but their really a pain to have around. We have to worry about ourselfs, our dogs and cats. We can't feed the birds because they just tear down the feeders.
Thanks Benjimester for stopping by.
Great article and photos! When we lived near Duluth, MN, we had bears show up in our yard a few times, even had cubs in the tree! Neighbor lady was sunbathing and woke up to a bear licking her toes! We didn't have any attacks, lucky for us and the neighbor lady!
I would have a heart attack if I woke up to a bear licking my toes.
Thanks for comments...
No encounters with bears here...the closest thing I've run into in the middle of the night is a "teddy" left on the floor lol...thank God!! I love the pictures...my favorite is "big black bear". stunning!
Funny, I have no small kids at home anymore but I have dogs that have to have their babies and some of those are teddy bears and their always all over the floor.
The big bear was very impressive up close and personal also.
Thanks so much for stopping by.
Here in Cherokee County, NC, we have black bears come into town some years. It depends on how the acorns and other wild food crops are doing in the mountains. About 50 miles from here, and child was killed and a mother attacked by a black bear. Everywhere we camp, we either see bears or where they have been here in western NC.
THANKS, Smokey for comments. That's terrible that a child was killed and mother attacked. Bears sure can't be trusted.
Very interesting article. I do not think I would like to see a bear up close!
I don't mind them if they stay away from my yard but I really don't like them coming in the yard.
Thanks k@ri for stopping by.
I love wildlife and the idea of bears in the area but damn if I'd want one in the yard and sure would miss feeding the birds. We had a bear invade our camp and he ate up all our Little Debbies. And the peanut butter too. I guess it was our fault.
Great pix, thanks for sharing, moonlake.
Thanks Dolores Monet for stopping by. The bear has already been in the yard this year and tore down another feeder. We have one feeder left way up in a tree to get to it he will have to hang from a string. I don't think he'll do that.
Hi! We also have bears in our area of the USA. It's pretty smart that you took your pics from inside and not out! Funny how your cat thinks he/she is just as tough as the big bear! Cheers, -dawei888 :-)
He does think he's tough, he also tries to run the deer out of the yard. Thanks for signing my hub.

great photos! We used to see bears now and then on our drive to the beach. I still watch for them but it's been a few years.
