Madame Beatrice - A Really Gutsy Beagle

Some years ago my friend Jennifer acquired a beagle called Beanz. She had belonged to an American family who were returning home and couldn't take her with them. She was a large, ponderous and definitely sneaky dog who lived for food. And once Jennifer and her son got to
know her they changed her name from Beanz to Beatrice which seemed to suit her right down to the ground. And right down to the ground was not a long way to travel for Beatrice as she suffered from duck's disease - you know built really close to earth! and even then her tummy was in danger of touching earth as she walked around.

Jennifer had a boy friend at this time who owned a black labrador called Gulliver, who also had to learn to live with Beatrice and her food-loving ways. In fact it got so bad for Gully that whenever he wanted to take a stroll around the garden, he would take his half filled food bowl in his mouth and carry it with him; so that Mrs. Greedy could not slip in behind him and hoover up whatever choice bits he had kept for his own afternoon delight! So there would be this little procession of Gully treking around the garden carrying his food bowl followed closely by the ever hopeful, crumb-gobbling Beatrice. But as Gully had cottoned onto her antics his food was safe because he was well aware of her treachorous and greedy ways.

Well the next player to come onto the scene was Charlie, my beautiful ridgeback girl, whom you may have read about earlier. She came to stay awhile with Jennifer, her son, Gully and Beatrice as we (as in my two sons and I ) were moving back to Canberra after a twelve month stay in Queensland. At Jennifer's suggestion we happily sent Charlie ahead to stay at Jennifer's house while we were finalising our move back home. Poor Charlie had to learn the hard way that she was not the only dog who loved her food and that Beatrice also really loved food, in fact anyone's and everyone's food. And just becasue she was a visitor did exempt Charlie from the beagle's thieving ways; and very soon she learned that it was not a good idea to leave her food unattended. In fact being a smart girl she watched and admired Gully who always picked up his food bowl and carried it around the back yard in his mouth to both thwart Beatrice and save his dog biscuits. He carried it straight and he carried it proudly. Nothing ever dropped out of his bowl!

And as he was such a great example on how to be " a true dog in the manger " about his food Charlie learned quickly and copied Gully. She started to carry her bowl in her mouth, usually half full of dog food, keeping it well out of the reach of Beatrice. You could almost see this ridgeback smiling as she cantered around the garden putting to use those really great avoidance tactics that she had learned from the labrador.

Unfortunately for Charlie she hadn't watched Gully closely enough; she didn't carry her bowl straight like him. Rather she carried it at such an jaunty angle she was sprinkling her dinner behind her rather like doggie treats for the next person in line. In fact quite unknowingly and most generously she was sharing her meal with Beatrice who was following along directly behind Charlie hoovering up every mouthful which was dropping out of the sky just like the proverbial manna from heaven.

And what about Beatrice? that concrete battleship - that double-dipping diva - she just got fatter and fatter and grew closer and closer to the ground!

Lily (my beagle/hound dawg mix) actually hoovers her food into her mouth and yes, the cat bowl has to be out of her reach.

it is an interesting word for eating - hoovering - but so apt for these dogs - piglets - loved some of the videos I didn't realise they sang so well - thanks teresa ...cheers

Thanks Susie - she was undoubtably a pig! and that is saying something when I remember Charlie's thieving ways, particularly with chocolates and cake....cheers

I got such a kick out of Gully and Charlie carrying their bowls. What a hoot, and am sure is quite the sight!

I haven't seen you aj. Is everything OK?

Thanks for calling in Christoph - it was a really funny sight - three dogs in a procession with the third following nose to ground hoovering the grass - i have been a bit under the weather lately - nothing serious - plus back in the workforce part time and also the spectre of the 30 day hub challenge has caused me to temporarily keep a lower profile - thanks for caring ...cheers

It's a beagle characteristic to live for food. Our beagle, Beauty, actually makes a pig like grunting sound in the presence of food, and sometimes when she "thinks" there is food -- as in one of us is in the kitchen. Pretending to eat, is sometimes the only way we can get her to come to us when she gets in a stubborn mood.

Nice story on Beatrice. A good friend of mine has several Dachshunds that love to eat and needless to say they are extremely low-riding.

Nice to know Jerilee Wei - but it can be a little disconcerting for the other dogs - even when they are know to the greed gene as well.. Love the way you have to trick her with pretending to eat so that she does what you want - amazing how we get to know our four legged friends so well...cheers

Ashley Joy  -  my brother has always had Dachshunds - from boyhood really - but unfortunately he moved up north where dachsies and brown snakes do not get along and hence the demise of his Rosco - so more dogs for  him until and if he decides to move again! but I do remember that both Fritzie no 1 and Fritzie no 2 were both brave little souls  who appreciated a good bowl of whatever was going...Fritzie 2 was a boy who knew his own mind and was nicknamed Fritzie Fruit Bat....cheers

I have a westie called Hettie who is, like Teresa's dog, a vacuum cleaner. She's actually very popular at the local port-side restaurant in the early mornings as she cleans up the crumbs from the night before.

This was a very nice read - thumbs up !

Thanks Iphigenia - seems these dogs are well known for their greed factor - I had no idea - thought it was just an abberation peculiar to Beatrice! Hettie must be very popular at the restuarant as she selflessly goes about helping them with the mop up - what a good dog!!! cheers

Hettie is also perfectly bilingual English-French and if she had read your fan mail to me would be able to tell you that "poussière des chausettes" means " dust of socks"  ie: sock dust.  But only if she wasn't too busy vacuuming around the tables at the local resto of course !

so Iphigenia - Hettie speaks both languages equally well - must be most helpful for her when she is scouting through the french left overs of the english speaking tourists! does she read also? does she do menus? although she probably wouldn't have time with all her extra-curricular activities!

With my shool girl french I did guess but couldn't find my french/english dictionary to be sure, to be sure! so thanks for that.

Meet my Harriet - upper left of comments box! jack russel/miniature fox terrier minx....bossy little hound with a big heart..cheers and thanks

lol - dogs really are the best.

I have a similar situation at my house! Every time my dogs do this, I am reminded of Wimpy from Popeye :D

My Shiba Inu in particular is terrible. It is not that he really likes to eat, but he just likes to filch. He will wait until my Siberian gets food out of the food toy and then go eat up whatever he can so he doesn't have to do any of the work - lol. He thinks he is too smart to touch ;)

shibashake - I had wondered where your name came from? - they are smart and funny aren't they - and as in your "Shiba Inu " doesn't want to get this paws dirty!...cheers
