Henna or mehndi, is common in India, the Middle East and North Africa. Traditionally, henna patterns are applied to signify a special occasion, usually a wedding.Hindu brides and sometimes grooms, for example, have intricate mehndi designs piped onto their hands, forearms, feet and calves. Moroccan culture makes use of the art of mehndi for many special occasions, including weddings, births, engagements and birthdays. In recent years, temporary skin decoration with henna has become popular in Western countries as well.

Henna at its finest

The intricate mehndi designs, which are painted on both the hands and feet, may contain a secret language. Designs include geometric and figurative motifs such as flowers and leaf and vine patterns, and traditional hindu religious symbols.

Most Henna lovers today prefer to have their henna applied by trained professionals. A professional will ensure that the end result is highly desirable. Computer graphic designs are also used with the traditional mehendi designs. Traditional Arabic designs of mehendi have now become popular in India. Wonderful designs make the art of mehendi more attractive and beautiful.

Folklore surrounding the orgins of Henna states that marital love will be as deep and long-lasting as the colour.

Applying Henna is always a fun and filled with enjoyment as family members and friends gathers to celebrate the lovely occasion about to happen.

Hi Ms Violet, Thank you so much for stopping by, actually Henna is totally different from makeup. Think of a juicy leaf, now smash it up, take the juice and use it as ink to paint your body. only that this is much stronger than paint and it can take about 4 days to completely disappear if you wash it away with water and soap. Nowadays in this busy world where women go to work the very next day after they get married, stick-on henna is being used. so there is one way to save yourself the trouble of cleaning up but pls note if you are going for the real stuff, remember the only color a henna leaf cannot produce is black.  the black henna we see being sold are mixed with chemicals which is known to cause skin cancer, so there you go and thank you once again for dropping by

NANA sweet sweet Nana... so nice of you to take sometime to come view my hub. The video of the girl getting a henna was 4 mins but in fact the entire process is about 4 to 5 hrs depends on how fast your artist is. Many westerners are adopting the Henna culture. In Singapore there are alot of Americans and they bring so many of their cultures and traditions when they come here and bring back many practises we have to the States. THAT IS ONE WAY OF SPREADING DIFFERENT CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD. Thank you Nana for dropping by to comment on my hub. I really appreciate it.

Im surprised there are no henna parlours in the US. Maybe someone should invest in one since its getting popular there.  You must be settled down there. Hope you get your wish to visit your country soon Ms. Thank you for stopping by.

Hey I liked that work of butterfly on hand. But I have not heard of these terms "Henna or mehndi". Are they some ingredient to make these designs? Looks like tatoo. Does it remain for ever like some tatoo work? And since it is applied on hand, will it be hygenic while having food with hand, like having burgar?

Hi Packerpack,

Henna is a safe vegetarian food dye. Is hygienic, eventually dissappears especially on hands as they are washed frequently. The last time I had henna it lasted only a week. Whereas My sisterinlaw found tricks to making it last longer eg add tea leaves or lemon. (will last twice the time). Henna for me is a temporary tatoo - as not into the real thing. Mendhi is the north indian word for henna.
