Beauty In One Of Natures Ugly Creatures

I used to think that the Possum was one of the ugliest creatures in the world.  It wasn't until I got over the fear of them that I realized what beautiful creatures they are.  I am blessed to be able to watch nature right from my back door.

I used to go out and chase them away with a broom and yes they do growl at you.  Never had I had one that came ofter me or even attempted to attack me.  They have a growl similar to a cat when it growls.  If you never heard a cat growl then you wouldn't know what I mean because it is different then a dog growl.

One night I got adventurous and went outside to take pictures of these creatures.  Please don't tell me that doing that is dangerous, because there is lots of fear going on that simply is not true--at least not for me that is.  You see I have this way with animals, dogs, cats, wild and other animals.  It's a gift they say, but I know it is only respecting the animals and understanding what they do, how they do it and why they do it.  I can sense if one is sick or if they are lost and need finding.  I have had this ability all my life.

Anyway, I went out to take some pictures of one of them. It was in a group with two siblings.  This one was quite a bit smaller then it's siblings and his mouth was mal-formed.  Instead of the teeth being up and down like teeth should be they pointed out and his nose snout was like it was pushed in.

This little creature was not afraid of the many cats that reside and call my deck their homes.  I kind of felt sorry for the little fella because it also didn't seem to have the thinking ability to get out of tight spots and run down the stairs when cornered, like his siblings had.  Oh they would come up after an hour or so when they didnt' see their sibling come back to the nest.  They would corral the little fella until it turned around and went the correct way.

So I began to watch and study this creature that I thought was so ugly and came to find out that they aren't ugly at all.  Even with his deformed snout and teeth he was put here for a reason.  The cats had cornered him one night and I took the opportunity to get a picture of him and so I did.  The little fella was so afraid and just didn't know what direction to go in because I was at one end and the cats were at the other end.  My cats are different then any cats that you would hear of.  Most cats are afraid of these creatures because it is said that they will not hesitate to attack and eat a cat.  My cats chase these creatures off the deck.  They also like to grab them from behind as they scurry off down the steps.  The big momma possums get the worst treatment this way and I haven't seen the bigger ones come up for a while.

Look at the picture to the right and see the feet of these cratures.  They don't stand on their toe pads like other animals do.  We can't even do what they do naturally with our hands.  The palm of their feet are flat on the ground and their toes spread out.  This is true for all four feet.  They climb very well too with them that way.

This one little fella has not come back in a long while and I thinkd he got hit by a car or just died.  He was really small and with his deformities I doubt he made it through 2 winters.

It might take something out of the ordinary - a wounded goose, a close look at a bald eagle, even a rotten opossum - to get kids hooked on birds and other wild things. But it's a worthy goal.

  • 'Cats' lands at The GrandGalveston County Daily News80 minutes ago

GALVESTON Cats, a show that revolutionized musical theater, is coming to The Grand 1894 Opera House for three performances.

I don't know where these creatures find a place to bed aways from the cats and other nosey creatures.  The reports that say they sleep hanging from their tails is a myth, but little is known about them.  One night just maybe I will follow one to see where it goes.  Hahaha, I would really have a big desire to do this as the woods are thick in some areas and we do have some trees down.  I think they may make a nest under the fallen tress. Don't quote me on this though as I have never ever seen any next or anything that would suggest it be a possum nest.  Sometimes my cats will nest or lay in the woods too.  I also have raccoons and that is another story abut them.  Nothing is afraid of me and I not afraid of them.  I just respect their space and their needs.

Possums don't truly hibernate either.  They will sleep when the temps get really low but when they aren't so low they will come out a feed.  They may do this several times in a winter.  Their life span is that of a rabbit, very short, about 5 years.  I still have not figured where they sit on the food chain or their purpose in being one of the many creatures that are on the planet Earth.

There is a new little possum that now comes up on our deck for me to observe. I didn't think that possums would have babies this late in the year. He is about the size of a 5 month old kitten and he eats along side the cats. He will come up on the deck while I am there, if I do not move. I have attempted to talk to it and it is coming around. I do not worry so much about rabies here. You would know it if you saw an animal with that, believe me you would know if it had rabies or not. He still keeps his distance of about 3 feet from me, but tha is OK, That is the respecting his space. I don't encroach on his and he doesn't encroach on mine. This little fella is normal in all aspect except that he is almost a newborn and only one in the litter. I have not seen any other ones but this little one come on the deck. He is growing and he seems to be healthy. I just don't know why he seems to be the only one in the litter and has been born so late. The cats don't seem to mind him at all either.

Watching and learning from these creatures has been a pleasure and I don't really see them as ugly anymore.  There is beauty is one of natures ugly creatures only if you want to see it.

LG - I understand your reasons for changing your mind about the "beauty" of 'possums. They are good eating, but lousy looking to me. Gus

GudTheRedneck,

I never ate a possum. Only Squirrels and they taste like chicken.

Possums have a place in nature and should be respected for that. I have nothing against possums but I do believe they are one of the animals first suspected when rabies is found in an area.

In our area it is the raccoons that are first expected. The second victim is the feral cats. They are all in the same family which is why if you try to det rid of one you end up getting rid of all. Then you have a bigger mess with the animals that have no predator to keep them in check. It's best not to fool with Mother Nature (God/Creator/Universe) because she knows what she is doing!

Just like beauty, ugly is in the eye of the beholder. And yes, 'possums have their place in the natural order of things. But, Nature sometimes runs up against a brick wall. When things tip out of balance, she changes things. As humans, we need to remember that. We have tipped the balance in favor of our own extinction. And the 'possum will most likely still be here when we go. Unless we do the right thing. Now, I wonder what that might be?

Good hub!

In Australia they are a protected species, while in New Zealand they are a pest. They are hunted, poisoned. Some people hunt and make a good living from selling their skins, so there are a number of possum products.

The main reason they are so hated in New Zealand, Is largely due to the fact that New Zealand are/were Island's of birds. Until the coming of man and the pests they brought with them such as dogs and rats, then later cats. The Bird population of New Zealand was vast and varied having no predators here, many spices are now extinct. A number are on the brink of extinction though New Zealand has done extremely well to bring some of the population numbers back of birds that are only found here and no where else in the world.Possums are a Major threat to many of the native birds as they eat the eggs and young chick's. Hence to many of New Zealand the only good possum is a dead possum

Possums here in New Zealand were introduced from Australia and are a major pest, I assume they're a relative of the American possum, but are a lot cuter.

They do make good pets, are intelligent, and have a wicked sense of humour. People that I knew who lived in the country had one that would "perch" inside over the entrance door and urinate on anyone it didn't know who came in.

They won't attack you unprovoked, but don't try picking up untamed ones as they are very strong and can inflict serious wounds with their claws if frightened. Cats normally come off worse in fights as the pos' can rip the cats stomach with its hind claws.

here's a link which will give you a lot of basic information on them: http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en-GB&q=possums+

Wow I never thought this hub would bring in this many people who like them!

RichardSpeaks, yes they are tough but to a point. We have many stray and feral cats around here.

The Old Firm, I would never to to pick on up with all those theeth they have. It would surprise me that a cat wouldn't win. if the Possum were outnumbered and felt cornered. Thanks for the link too.

Watch Tower, many pest live here and were brought from other countires as well--like the rat and then there are several speices that were brought and accidentlly let loose and they don't have predators either-like the Snakehead Fish and the plant tht lives in teh water that is taking all the oxegen out of it so nothing can live in it.

We humans have no idea what we are really doing. We are just focusing on one thing and not seeing th other dangerous possibilities we bring along with that.

Bkcreative, Yes after a fashing they are cute. They just look like large Rats and they smell awful--like stagnant mud. Maybe that is where they sleep- near the small stream that flows at the end of our lot. We also live next to a Ravine, but it doesn't have any water flowing in it. Just rock to rock.

Thanks to all of you for your comments.

I grew up with two of the strangest pets, a possum and a raccoon. My mother found a raccoon half dead on the side of the road and took t to the vet. They said they will not treat him, it is not listed on their insurance. So, my mom took him home and nursed him to health. Wetried not to make contact with him too much. We planned on releasing him into the wild. He seemed when he was healthy as if he did not want to leave, we would leave windows and doors open, and the next morning we couln't find him. As I went to bring cleaning supplies to my mother, we found him under the kitchen sink cabinet curled up sleeping. This happened twice in a row, so we started feeding him. What do you feed a raccoon? We fed him ravioli. Thats how he got his name, Ravioli. We had him for a total of 5 years until he died. We do not know what the cause was.

Then about a year later my mother was a big dump, with dumpsters and everything. When she heard weird sounds coming from a plastic container. She heard a redneck guy talking about going home and putting an end to the bloody creatures. As the man walked off the curiosity got the best of her. She approached the box and looked in the hole in the top. Two baby possums were trying to climb up the wall making a screeching sound. She grabbed the container and placed in the back of our truck and came home. She opened the container but the also seemed as if they did not want to leave. So she left the box out their all night with the lid open turned sideways. In the morning the were still there. Soon, the would only leave the box when my mother came out fed them. We fixed the a mixture of meat, and veggies with some wet canned cat food. They loved it. They would be right behind my mother, every step. They followed her like ducklings follow their mom, in a row. Soon we fixed them a chicken coop type of house with a dog door on it, and thats were they stayed. They lived their for 7 years. Never leaving that chicken coop, even after dark.

We named them Jill and Jack. Even though we did not really know their sexes.

I love your hub, it brought back good memories.

AshleyNicole, What a beautiful story. My mom did the same with a Raccooon she got from this house as it was their cabin way back. They named him Bandit. I don't remember what they fed him, but he got into the mating and they had to let him go out in these woods we live in. He didn't want to go either.

Animals know who they can trust and who will take care of them.

My belief is that they were here first and we were here to take care of them and the planet as a whole. Many people are just outright mean. There is a link as to how people treat animals they also go to treat other people the same way.

Christoph, perhaps Animal Whisperer. I have a tale about the Raccoons, one in particular, tht I will write about later. HP is having some tech issues with some of our hubs. Pictures not saving and the last hub I wrote about Spaghtti Squash it ate half of my hub. I guess it was sooo good that it had to hve a bite. 5 hours later and still the same problems. I will wait until maybe Monday to write another hub or 2 or 3.

I just saw a baby possum on my back deck, but can't get a picture of it. It is very young. It could hardly make it up or down the stairs. When and If I do get a picture I will post it on the hub.
